Know What Smoke Alarms Can and Can’t Do
A Smoke Alarm can hel p aler t you t o fire, giv ing you pr ecious time t o
escape. It can only sou nd an alarm once smok e reaches the sensor .

This Smok e Alarm is designed to be used in a ty pical si ngle-fa mil y
home. It alone w ill no t meet requir ements f or board ing houses,

*All First Alert® Smoke Alarms conform to regulatory requirements,
including UL217 and are designed to detect particles of combustion.
Smoke particles of varying number and size are produced in all fires.

in grea ter amoun ts b y flami ng fires, w hich consume comb ust ible
mat erials rap idly a nd spread qu ickly . Sources o f these fires ma y include
paper burn ing in a w ast ebask et, or a grease fire in the k it chen.

in grea ter amoun ts b y smoldering fir es, w hich ma y smolder for
hours befor e burst ing int o flame . Sources o f these fires ma y include cig-
arett es burni ng in couches or bedding .
For maximum protection, use both types of Smoke Alarms on each
level and in every bedroom of your home.
• Thisunit will not alerthearing impairedresidents.
It is recommended that you install special units which use
devices like flashing strobe lights to alert hearing impair ed
residents.
• Donot connect this unitto any other alarmor auxiliary
device. It is a single-station unit that cannot be linked to
other devices. Connecting anything else to this unit may
prevent it fr om working properly .
• Unitwill not operate withoutbattery power .TheSmoke
Alarm cannot work until you install the battery in the correct
position (Match “+” to “+” and “-” to “-”).
• ThisSmoke Alarm has abattery door which resistsclosing
unless a battery is installed.
• Donot install this unitover an electrical junctionbox.
Aircurrents aroundjunction boxescan preventsmoke from
reaching the sensing chamber and pr event the unit from
alarming. Only AC powered units ar e intended for installation
overjunction boxes.
• Donot stand too closeto the unit whenthe alarm is sounding.
It is loud to wake you in an emergency . Exposure to the horn
at close range may harm your hearing.
• Donot paint over theunit. Paint may clogthe openings to
the sensing chamber and prevent the unit fr om operating
properly .

IF THIS SMOKE ALARM SOUNDS
RESPONDING TO AN ALARM
During an alarm, you will hear a loud, repeating horn pattern:
3 beeps, pause, 3 beeps, pause. The LED will flash rapidly .
• Ifthe unit alarms andyou arenot testing the unit,it is warning
you of a potentially dangerous situation that r equires your
immediate attention. NEVER ignore any alarm. Ignoring the
alarmmay resultin injury or death.
• Neverremove thebatteries froma battery operated Smoke
Alarm to stop an unwanted alarm (caused by cooking smoke,
etc.). Removing batteries disables the alarm so it cannot sense
smoke, and removes your pr otection. Instead open a window
or fan the smoke away from the unit. The alarm will r eset
automatically .
• Ifthe unit alarms geteveryone out of thehouse immediately.
IF YOU SUSPECT A PROBLEM
Smoke Alarms may not opera te pr operly because of d ead , missing or
w eak ba tteries , a build-u p of d ir t, dus t or grease on the Smok e Alarm
cov er , or ins tal lat ion in an im proper locat ion . Clean t he Smoke Alarm as
described in “ Regular M ain tenance , ” and inst all a f resh ba ttery , then t est
the Smok e Alarm again . I f it fa ils t o test pr operly when y ou use the t est
butt on , or if the prob lem per sists , replace t he Smoke Alarm im mediat ely .
• Ifyou hear a “chirp”about once a minute,replace thebattery .
• Ifyou experience frequentnon-emergencyalarms (like those
caused by cooking smoke), try relocating the Smoke Alarm.
• Ifthe alarm sounds whenno smoke is visible,try cleaning or
relocating the Smoke Alarm. The cover may be dirty .
• Ifthe alarm does notsound during testing, tryinstalling a new
battery , and make sur e it is snapped in securely .
Do not try fixing the alarm yourself – this will void your warranty!

SMOKE ALARMS
Installing Smoke Alarms in Single-Family Residences
The Nat ional F ire P ro t ection Associat ion (NFP A), recommends one
Smoke Alarm on every floor , in ev er y sleeping area, and in e v er y
bedroom . In ne w const ruction , the Smo ke Alarms must be AC pow ered
and in tercon nected . See “ Agency Placement Recommendat ions ” for
det ails . F or addit ional co v erage, it is r ecommended that you i nsta ll
a Smoke Alarm in all rooms, halls, s tor age areas , finished att ics , and
basements , where t emperat ures normall y remain be tw een 40˚ F (4 . 4˚ C)
and 1 00˚ F (3 7 .8˚ C) . M ake sur e no door or o ther obstruct ion could k eep
smoke f rom reach ing the Smok e Alarms.
More specifically , install Smoke Alarms:
•
On ev ery level o f your home , includ ing fin ished attic s and basement s.
• Inside e v er y be droom , especiall y if people sleep with doors closed .
• In the ha ll near ev er y sleeping area. I f your home has mu ltip le
sleeping ar eas, ins tal l a unit in each . I f a hall is o v er 40 f eet (1 2
met ers) long, instal l an alarm a t each end .
• At the t op o f the first-t o-second floor sta irwa y , a nd at bo ttom o f
basement st airwa y .
Specific requirement s for Smo ke Alarm inst alla tion v ar y from sta te t o
sta t e and from r egion to r egion . Check wit h your loca l Fir e Depar tment
for curr ent requ irements in y our area. It is recommended AC or AC/DC
units be interconnected for added protection.

LOCA TIONS TO AVOID FOR SMOKE ALARMS
For best performance, it is recommended you A VOID installing
Smoke Alarms in these areas:
• Where comb ust ion par ticles are pr oduced . Combus tion p ar ticles
form w hen someth ing burns. Areas t o a v oid includ e poorly v ent ilat ed
kit chens, garag es, and furnace r ooms. K eep units a t least 2 0 feet
(6 met ers) from the sources o f combust ion p ar ticles (st ov e , furnace ,
w at er heater , sp ace heat er) if possible . In areas w here a 2 0-foo t
(6-met er) dist ance is not possi ble – in mod ular , mobi le, or smaller
homes, f or exa mple – it is r ecommended the Smoke Alarm be
placed as far f rom these fuel-b urning sources as possib le. The
placement recommenda tions ar e int ended to k eep these Alarms a t
a reasonab le dist ance from a f uel-burni ng source, and thus reduce
“ un wa nt ed” alarms. Un w an ted alarms ca n occur if a Smoke Alarm is
placed direct ly ne xt to a fuel-b urning sour ce. V enti lat e these areas
as much as possible .
• In air s tr eams near kit chens. Air curren ts can dra w cook ing smok e
int o the sensing cha mber of a Smok e Alarm near the kit chen .
• In v er y damp , hu mid or st eam y areas , or dir ectly near b athr ooms
wit h show ers. K eep units at leas t 1 0 f eet (3 met ers) aw a y from
show ers, saunas , dish w ashers, et c .
• Where the t emperat ures are regu larly belo w 40˚ F (4 . 4˚ C) or abov e
1 00˚ F (3 7 . 8˚ C) , includi ng unheat ed bui ldings , out door rooms,
porches, or unfinished att ics or b asements.
• In v er y dusty , dirty , or greas y areas . Do no t inst all a Smok e Alarm
direct ly o v er the st ov e or ra nge. Keep laundry room Smoke Alarms
free o f dust or l int .
• Near fr esh air ven ts, ceiling fa ns, or in v er y drafty areas . Drafts ca n
blo w smoke a w a y from t he unit , pre ven ting it f rom reachi ng the
sensing chamber .
• In insect in fest ed areas . Insects can clog openi ngs to t he sensing
chamber and cause un w an t ed alarms.
• Less t han 1 2 inches (305mm) a w a y from fluor escent ligh ts. Electrical
“ noise” can int er fere wit h the sensor .
• In “ dead a ir” sp aces. “ Dead a ir” spaces ma y prev ent smok e fr om
reachi ng the Smok e Alarm .
Avoiding Dead Air Spaces
“ Dead air” sp aces may pr ev ent smok e from r eaching the Smo ke Alarm .
T o av oid dead a ir spaces, f oll ow the i nsta llat ion recommendat ions belo w .
On ceilings, inst all Smo ke Alarms as close t o the cent er of t he ceiling
as possible . If t his is no t possible , inst all t he Smoke Alarm a t least 4
inches (1 02 mm) fr om the w all or corner .
For wall mounting (if allo w ed by b uild ing codes) , the t op edge o f
Smoke Alarms should be placed betw een 4 and 1 2 inches (1 02 and 3 05
mm) from t he w all/cei ling li ne, belo w typica l “ dead air” spaces .
On a peaked, gabled, or cathedral ceiling, inst all t he first Smoke
Alarm wit hin 3 f eet (0 . 9 met ers) of the pea k of t he ceiling , measur ed
horizon tal ly . Addit ional Smok e Alarms ma y be required dependi ng on the
length , ang le, e tc . o f the ceili ng ’ s slope. Re fer t o NFP A 7 2 f or det ails on
requir ements f or sloped or peaked ceili ngs.
SPECIAL COMPLIANCE CONSIDERA TIONS
This Smok e Alarm is suit able f or use in ap ar tments , condomi niums ,
to w nhouses, hospit als, day car e faci lities , health car e faci lit ies, board ing
houses, group homes and d ormit ories pro vided a pri mar y fire det ection
sy st em alread y ex ists t o meet fire d et ection requ irements i n common
areas li ke lob bies, hal lw a ys , or porches. Using th is Smoke Alarm in
common areas ma y no t pro vid e sufficient warn ing t o all r esidents or
meet local fire pr ot ection or dinances/r egulat ions.
This Smok e Alarm alone is no t a suit able sub st itut e for comp let e fire
det ection s ys t ems in places housing man y people—li ke ap ar tment
bui ldings , condomin iums , hot els, mot els, dorm itories , hospita ls, hea lth
care f acilit ies, nursing homes , da y care f acilit ies, or grou p homes of an y
kind . I t is no t a suitab le subs titut e f or comple te fir e det ection s ys t ems
in w arehouses, ind ust rial f acilit ies, commercia l bui ldings , and special-
purpose non-resident ial b uild ings wh ich requir e special fire de tect ion
and alarm s ys tems . Depending on the b uild ing codes in y our area, th is
Smoke Alarm may be used to pro v ide add itiona l prot ect ion in these
faci lit ies.
In new cons truct ion , most b uild ing codes requir e the use o f AC or A C/
DC po w ered Smoke Alarms only . In e xis ti ng construct ion , A C , A C/DC , or
DC po w ered Smoke Alarms can be used as specified by local bu ildi ng
codes. Re fer t o NFP A 7 2 (National F ire Alarm and Sig nali ng Code) and
NFP A 1 01 (Lif e Saf ety Code) , loca l build ing codes, or consult you r Fi re
Department for d eta iled fire pro t ection requ irements in bui ldings not
defined as “households ” .
HUD MAP Program
Cer tain H UD b att er y pow ered Smoke Alarm ap plica tions , especially
those tha t fa ll under H UD 2 2 3(f) MA P (Mult i-f amil y Accelerated
Pr ocessing) , ma y require a 1 0 Y ear sealed tamper resis tan t batt er y . This
alarm does no t meet that r equirement . Subst itut e F irst Aler t SA340B.
LIMIT A TIONS OF SMOKE ALARMS
Smoke Alarms hav e pla yed a ke y role in r educing deat hs result ing fr om
home fires wor ldw ide. How ev er , li ke a ny w arning dev ice, Smoke Alarms
can onl y work if t hey are properl y locat ed , inst alled , and ma int ained , and
if smoke r eaches them . The y are not f oolpr oof .
Smoke alarms may not waken all individuals. Pr actice t he escape
plan a t least tw ice a year , ma king sur e that e veryone is in vo lv ed – from
kids t o grandp arent s. Allo w child ren t o mast er fire escape plann ing and
pract ice bef ore holdi ng a fire dri ll at n ight w hen they ar e sleeping .
If ch ildren or o thers do not r eadil y w ak en to the sou nd of t he smoke
alarm , or if t here are in fan ts or f ami ly members with mob ility li mita tions ,
mak e sure tha t someone is assigned to assist them in fir e dri ll and in
the ev ent o f an emergency . I t is recommended that y ou hold a fire dr ill
wh ile f amil y members are slee ping in or der to de termi ne their response
to t he sound o f the smok e alarm w hile sleeping and t o de termi ne
whe ther they ma y need assistance i n the ev ent o f an emergency .
Smoke Alarms cannot work without power. Batt er y operated un its
canno t wor k if the ba tteries are m issing , discon nected or dead , if the
wrong ty pe of b att eries are used , or if the b att eries are not ins tal led
correctl y . A C unit s canno t wor k if the AC po w er is cut off f or an y reason
(open fuse or circu it break er , f ailur e along a po w er line or at a po w er
sta tion , electr ical fire t hat burns the elect rical w ires, e tc . ). If you are
concerned about the limit at ions of b att er y or A C po w er , inst all bo th
types of u nits .
Smoke Alarms cannot detect fires if the smoke does not reach
them. Smoke f rom fires in ch imney s or w alls , on roo fs, or on the other
side o f closed doors may no t reach the sensing cha mber and set o ff the
alarm . That is wh y one unit shou ld be inst alled inside each bedr oom or
sleeping area—especially if bedr oom or sleeping area doors are closed
at nig ht—and in t he hall w a y betw een them .
Smoke Alarms may not detect fire on another floor or area of the
home. For e xa mple , a sta nd-alone un it on the second floor may no t
det ect smoke f rom a basement fir e unt il t he fire spreads . This ma y no t
gi ve y ou enough ti me to escape sa fel y . Tha t is wh y recommended
min imum pro t ection is at leas t one unit in e v er y sle eping area, and every
bedroom on ev er y lev el of y our home. Ev en with a u nit on ev er y floor ,
sta nd-alone un its ma y not pr ov ide as much pr ot ection as i nt erconnected
unit s, especially if t he fire st ar ts in a remo t e area. Some saf ety e xper ts
recommend inst all ing int erconnect ed A C po w ered units w ith ba tt er y
back-up (see “ About Smok e Alarms ”) or pro fessiona l fire det ection
sy st ems, so if one un it senses smoke , all u nits alarm . I nt erconnect ed
unit s may pr ov ide earl ier warn ing than s tand-a lone
unit s since all u nits a larm when one det ects smok e.
Smoke Alarms may not be heard. Though t he alarm horn in th is unit
meets or e xceeds current s tandar ds, it ma y no t be heard if: 1) the unit
is locat ed outside a closed or partial ly closed door , 2) residen ts recent ly
consumed alcohol or drugs , 3) the alarm is d row ned out by no ise from
st ereo, TV , tr affic, air cond it ioner or other app liances, 4) residents are
hearing im pair ed or sound sleepe rs. Special purpose unit s, li ke t hose
wit h visua l and audi ble alarms , should be ins tal led for hearing i mpa ired
res i de nts.
Smoke Alarms may not have time to alarm before the fir e itself
causesdamage, injury ,or death, sincesmoke fromsome firesmay
not reach the unit immediately . Examples of this include persons
smoking in bed, children playing with matches, or fir es caused by
violent explosions resulting fr om escaping gas.
Smoke Alarms are not foolproof. Lik e an y electron ic dev ice, Smoke
Alarms are made o f component s that can w ear out or fail a t an y ti me.
Y ou must t est the u nit w eekly t o ensure y our cont inued pro tect ion .
Smoke Alarms cannot pre v ent or ext inguish fir es. They ar e not a
subst itut e f or proper ty or life i nsurance .
Smoke Alarms have a limited life. The un it should be replaced
immedia tel y if it is not operat ing pr operly . Y ou should a lw a ys r eplace a
Smoke Alarm af ter 1 0 years from dat e o f purchase . W rit e the p urchase

The Silence F eat ure can t emporari ly qu iet an un w an ted alarm f or up
to 1 5 minut es. T o use this f eat ure , press the T est/Silence butt on on the
cove r . If the unit will not silence and no heavy smoke is present,
or if it stays in silence mode continuously, it should be replaced
immediately. The L E D wil l flash ev er y 1 0 seconds wh ile in silence .
The Silence Feature does not disable the unit—it makes it
temporarily less sensitive to smoke. For your safety , if smoke
around the unit is dense enough to suggest a potentially danger ous
situation, the unit will stay in alarm or may re-alarm quickly . If you
do not know the source of the smoke, do not assume it is an
unwanted alarm. Not responding to an alarm can r esult in property
loss,injury ,or death.

• Relocat e the un it if it sounds fr equent un w ant ed alarms. Se e

• When the b att er y become s w eak, the Smo ke Alarm un it wi ll “ chirp ”
appro x imat ely once a m inut e (the lo w batt er y w arning) . Th is low

Choosing a replacement battery:
Y our Smoke Alarm r equires one st andard 9V batt er y . The f ollo w ing
batt eries are accep tab le as replacements: E v eready 1 22 2 , Duracel l
MN1 604 , (Ult ra) MX1 604; Energiz er 5 22 . Y ou may also use a Lit hiu m
batt ery like t he Duracell D L1 604 for l onger ser vice lif e betw een batt er y
changes. These batteries are available at many local retail stores.
• Alwaysuse the exact batteriesspecified by this User’ sManual.
DO NOT use rechar geable batteries. Clean the battery contacts
and also those of the device prior to battery installation. Install
batteries correctly with r egard to polarity (+ and -).
• Pleasedispose of or recycleused batteriesproperly ,following
any local regulations. Consult your local waste management
authority or recycling or ganization to find an electronics
recycling facility in your ar ea. DO NOT DISPOSE OF BA TTERIES

The optional locking feature is designed to pr event unauthorized removal of the alarm. It is not necessary to
activate the lock in single-family households where unauthorized alarm r emoval is not a concern.

The f eatur e uses a locking pi n which is mo lded int o the moun ti ng bracke t. Remo ve l ocking p in by usi ng needle-nose
pliers or a uti lity kn ife .
T o permanently remove the locking pin, insert a flathead scr ewdriver between the locking pin and the lock and pry the pin out of the lock.
OPTIONAL LOCKING FEA TURE
TO LOCK THE MOUNTING BRACKET
1. Using needle-nose pliers, detach the pin from
the mounting bracket.
2. Insert the locking pin through the
hole on the back of the smoke alarm as
shown in the diagram.
3. When you attach the alarm to the
mounting bracket the locking pin’ s head
will fit into a notch on the bracket.
TO UNLOCK THE MOUNTING BRACKET
1. Insert a flathead screwdriver
in between the mounting
bracket and the locking pin.
2. Pry the alarm away from the bracket by pushing up the scr ewdriver
and turning the alarm counterclockwise (left) at the same time.
