Installing the stov e:
According to existi ng regulations, stoves m ust be placed wit h the following minim um dis-
tances (in centimetres) to inflammable walls and materials:
Sides: 25 cm R ear: 10 cm Distance to fu rniture in front of s tove: 80 cm
If walls are non- inflammable, t he stove can be placed cl oser to t hem. However, we rec om-
mend a minimum distance of 5- 10 cm. to all ow for cleaning behind t he stove. T he cleanout
gate must be access ible.
Optimal combustio n can only be obtained if fresh air is co nstantly admitted. It is im portant,
therefore, to ensure t hat this is t he case.
The best way to prov ide a steady flow of f resh air is by insta lling 1- 2 air ve nt's) in the room
where the stove is sit uated. (one i n each side of the room).
Flooring:
If the floor on whic h the stove is to be pl aced is inflamm able, the floor m ust be covered with
non-inflamm able material, such as a st eel or glass plate, f loor tiles or artificial slat e, cover-
ing an area of at least 15 c m. from the sides of the stove a nd at least 30 cm. f rom the front
of it. With regard to t he front, however, we recomme nd 50 cm.
Also, the bearing constr uction must be cap able of carrying t he combined we ight of stove
and chimney.
Find the weight of th e stoves on pa ge 4.
The chimney :
Always use a chim ney with a diameter of at least 15 cm . This corresponds t o a clear of 175
square centimetres. Make sure the c himney is of a s ufficient height, that it dra ws well and
that smoke does not bother your neig hbours.
We recomme nd that you fit your c himney with a damp er, allowing for dr aft control. This may
prove particularly important on wind y days.
Note: the damper m ust never s hut off draught completely – always allow at least 20 square
cm free passage thro ugh the chim ney.
With nominal usage t he stove has teste d a Smoke flow of 4, 8 g/second a nd with a smoke
temperature of 304° C in a room of 20° C.
Varde stoves are a lways fitted wit h a smoke plate whic h redirects sm oke to make its way to
the chimney as eff ectively as possible. T his ensures t hat the heat from t he smoke is emitted
inside your home rat her than outside it. T he smoke plate is moveable and p laced on top of
the Vermiculite fire br ick side plate. You s hould make s ure that it is pushed all the way back
against the back wall of the combustion c hamber.
How to light and stok e a fire:
The first time you light up the stove t he enamel will temper, and give off some sm oke and a
slight smell. W e recommend that you leave doors a nd windows open, as air ing the room will
make the smell disap pear. This temper ing softens the enam el making it s usceptible to
damage. T herefore exercise caut ion and avoid touching t he enamel. Like wise we recom-
mend opening t he door to the stove at r egular intervals for t he first hours to preve nt the
insulation rope from s ticking to the ename l.
Never use highly inflammable fluids s uch as spirit and petro l for lighting up! Instead, use a
crumpled up piece of newspaper or kindlin g blocks topped by 1 0 -15 small sticks (c. 2 kg .).
A thin layer of as hes at the bottom of t he stove makes lighting up a fire easier.
Before lighting up t he stove, open t he shak ing grate by p ulling the lever all t he way out.
Then open the valve on the ash- pan for access of ignition air and open the v alve on top o n
the Stove for comb ustion air (alternatively, shortly leave the as h-pan a little open if there is
no wind and no dr aught in the c himney), thus allowing t he fire to catch on. A lways remem-
ber to close t he ash-pan agai n, otherwise the stov e can be overheat ed, and this is not
covered by the warranty.
When the fire b urns steady, then rememb er to close the i gnition air valve on the ash- lid
again, (the handle is in vertical position). W hen the stove is burning nomi nal, there may not
be added air t hrough this valve, it ma y cause overheati ng of the stove, and t his is not cov-
ered by the warra nty.
Regulations
All local regulations as well as
National and European, sho uld be
adhered to when installi ng your
stove.
All Varde Ovne stoves are closed
fireplaces.
Draught conditi ons
Consult your local stove deal er about
how best to adjust the draug ht in your
chimney.
Chimney Fires
Should you r chimney catch fire, cut
off the air supply to the stove's
combustion chamber and contac t
the emergency services. ( The ma-
jority of fires die out afte r the oxygen
supply is cut off). Foll owing this, the
least you should do is to con tact
your chimney sw eeper, who will
check your stove and chimney for
damage.
Continual fresh air
A continual supply of fresh air is
required in the room in w itch the
stove is situated.
This can be achieved by instal ling 1
-2 vents, whilst al so ensuring that
these can not be bl ocked.
The shaking grate
The shaking grate is si tuated at the
bottom of the combustion chamber.
The ashes will be shaken into t he ash
-pan by the pulling and pus hing of the
lever.
Combustion / Seco ndary air
Pre-heated air for t he combus-
tion process, the amount of
which can be altered accordi ng
to the desired room tempera-
ture, and the effectiveness of
the chimney. A high level of
chimney draught requires a
lesser intake of combustion ai r.
VARDE OVNE A/S
Is a Danish company special is-
ing in functional, environmen-
tally friendly and designed
quality stoves.
As well as having passed the
Danish (DS/EN 13240),
Swedish (SP), Norwegian
(Sintef) and German (DINplus)
Kite marks, the stove is al so
awarded the coveted Svane-
maerke for environmentall y-
friendly products.
(CO value lower than 0,12 %
and a smoke temperature of
less than 305 °C).
Tertiary air
is constantly added air, whic h
makes the stove burn even
cleaner, and lowers the conte nt
of tar and soot in the combus-
tion process to an absolute
minimum.
At optimal combustion settings,
glass and combustion chamber
will be burnt completel y clean,
and the remaining amount of
ashes will be minimal .
What kind of wood t o use?
Generally, beech wood is co n-
sidered the best type of wood
for burning. It burns evenly
without producing much smoke
and the ashes are clean and
take up little space. Ash, birc h
and maple wood are fine alter-
natives.
Overheating
Occurs if too much wood is
placed in the stove or if the
combustion receives too muc h
air.
Vermiculite fire bri cks
A special non-inflammable
material. The vermiculi te fire
bricks both isolate and protect
the stove from attriti on. Vermicu-
lite fire bricks and smoke plate
are not covered by the warr anty.
Vermiculite is a very porous
material, therefore handle wi th
care. When refilling the stove,
put in the wood carefull y, use
the glove.
In most instances, however, yo u will have to arrive at the b est combustion air settings your-
self, as the height and diameter of yo ur chimney, as well as the quality of the firewood are
decisive factors in determini ng how your particular stove i s best set (see also the secti on on
troubleshooting on next side).
If you are wondering why your stove i s fitted wi th an gap in the rear vermiculi te plate in the
combustion chamber, with smal l holes through the back steel plate, where air i s running
through into the combustio n chamber. This is merel y a consequence of our newly devel oped
combustion system. W e refer to these air ducts as the ‘tertiary ai r’, and will prove helpful as
you install your new Varde stove.
When refilling the stove with wood, we r ecommend opening t he stove door only once embers
are left in the combustion chamber. Op ening the door whil st the flames are still burning and
producing smoke and gas, mi ght cause smoke to sli p into the room instead of up the chim ney.
What to burn
This Varde stove is tested a nd approved for the burning of wood. O nly dry wood with a moi s-
ture content of maximum 21 perce nt and the size to fit i nto the combustion chamber should be
used. The burning of moist wood wi ll result in an increased amo unt of tarry soot, pollution a nd
uneconomic fuel consumptio n. Newly chopped wood contai ns about 60-70 per cent moisture,
which makes it completel y unsuitable as fuel. All ow newly chopped firewood to dry i n an open
shed for a couple of years before using it in the stove. Spli t firewood with a diameter l arger
than 10 cm. Use firewood wi th a length on 20-25 cm.
The use of larger quantiti es of fuel than recommended in the tabl e page 2 will overtax the
stove and result in increased temperat ures in the chimney as wel l as a l owered efficiency.
This may cause damage to bot h chimney and stove, and the a nnulment of the warranty.
Also, never use toxic materi als such as chipboard, painted or i mpregnated wood.
Maintenance a nd cleaning
As any piece of equipment i n daily use, your stove needs mai ntenance.
The stove should only be cl eaned when cold. Use a dry cl oth for cleaning the exterior of t he
stove.
Clean the interior regularl y by removing ashes, soot and tar from t he combustion chamber.
The smoke plate should be removed fo r cleaning as the reverse si de will be covered in dirt and
soot. Finally check that the smoke's pat hway through the smoke pipe a nd chimney is com-
pletely clear. You should al so inspect the gaskets in the door a nd the ash-pan for si gns of
wear. Replace them if permeabl e. Also, remember to oil the hinges of the door as required.
Empty the ash-pan regularl y. It can be empti ed into your dustbin, as long as you ma ke sure it
contains no hot embers.
When in doubt as how to clea n your stove, contact the dealer from w hom you bought your
stove, or your chimney sweeper. It i s especially important to c heck the stove and its chimney
for blockages after a long peri od of non-use.
The enamelled surface of the stove ma y wear dow n at certain places if the stove i s
overheated.
Worn surfaces, however, can be repai red with a special Senotherm® spray pai nt, available
at your local vendor.
The plates in the combustio n chamber are Ver miculite plates and will eventuall y be worn,
– as will the smoke plate. S hould you accidentall y break a plate, for instance by hitting it hard
with a piece of wood, this does not effect the quali ty of the combustion. You need not repl ace
the plate until the gap is 5 mm. wi de.
The door is constr ucted with a spri ng w hich automatically swi ngs the door shut.
This may be a function required by e xisting regulati ons.
The spring is placed behind t he left steel-si deplate, and can be removed, if you do not want
this option.
Only use original s pare parts from V arde Ovne.
Do not make an y unauthorised c hanges.
All external parts of the stove be come hot during use, too. Therefore exercis e
necessary caution when the sto ve is in use.
Ignition air valve
The valve on the ash-pan is con-
structed as a ignition air valve, and
may only be used when lighting up
the stove. When the stove is burn ing
the valve has to be cl osed again.
- The valve is cl osed (burning posi-
tion) when the handl e on the valve is
standing in vertical position.
- The valve is opened (igni tion
position), when the handl e is in
horizontal position and the hole in
the valve is in the topside.
Remember to turn the val ve back to
burning position when the fire burns
steady.
