Method C – Programming by means
of code retrieval
Should none of th e codes work, yo u st ill have th e
possibility of re trieving th e appropriat e code without
having to perform any input.
1. Switc h on th e set yo u wa nt to control.
2. Hold down th e SETUP key until th e key th at
corre sponds to th e last mode yo u selected blinks
and th en re mains lit.
3. Press th e key th at corre sponds to th e type of
equipment yo u wa nt to control:
TV: te levision set, DVD : DV D player, SAT: sate llite
receiver , cable, DV BT, ADSL, AUX : any ot her
appliance.
4. Direct th e re mote control toward s th e set and try to
switch it of f by pressing th e key G .
5. If th e set yo u wa nt to control switches off, press OK
to memorise th e code.
6. Should th e set not switc h of f, press key G as many
times as requ ired (up to 200 times), until th e set
switches off. Between two key pr esses, leave
enough time fo r th e key corre sponding to th e
selected mode to light up again (about 1 second).
Proceeding th is way will enable yo u to see wheth er
the set re sponds or no t.
7. Immediately upon th e switching-of f of th e set to be
controlled, press OK to store th e code.
Check of the programming:

Try out ot her re mote control key s to fi nd ou t th e ra nge
of functions yo u can control. If yo u th ink th at no t all of
the key s are active, re peat the procedure of th is
programming meth od to fi nd ou t th e code suppor ting a
wider ra nge of fe atures.
Method D – Automatic
code search
With th is method, th e re mote control scrolls thro ugh
the full code list by sending an IR signal to the set to
be controlled re motely. Proceed as fo llows:
1. Check that yo ur eq uipment is on. If not, switch it on
manually.
2. Hold down th e SETUP key until th e key th at
corre sponds to th e last mode yo u selected blinks
and th en re mains lit (t he indicator light re mains on
for a few seconds to give yo u th e time to proceed
with th e fo llowing st eps. The indicat or lamp fl ashes
to signal th at th is time is almost up, and th en goes
off).
3. Re lease th e SETUP key.
4. Press th e key corre sponding to th e type of
equipment (f or examp le TV ).
5. Press th e P+ or standby G or B (DVD only) key.
Afte r a fe w seconds, th e re mote control begins to
scroll thro ugh th e whole code list included in th e
library (at a rate of ro ughly 1 code per second).
Press th e P+ key on ce again to slow down th e te st
speed (1 code ev er y 3 seconds). As soon as th e set
changes channels, yo u must press OK to save th e
code and stop th e re mote control scrolling thro ugh
the list. If yo u do not re act qu ickl y enough, yo u can
go bac k to th e prev ious code by pressing P- or E
(DVD only) as many times as necessar y (you can
go forw ar d by pressing G , P+ or B (DV D only) if
you have gone back to o fa r). As soon as th e set
responds again, press OK to save th e code.
Method E – Programming for control of a
COMBO (combined TV-VCR, TV/DVD, VCR/
DVD, … set)
Depending on th e COMBO gr oup (TV/VCR, VC R/
DVD, etc.) and th e make, yo u will be re quired to
enter a single code fo r both devices in th e COMBO, or
to enter two codes, one code per device. Consult the
separate lis t to discove r th is.
Before yo u start progra mming, yo u mus t fi nd th e
subcode or code of th e subset to be controlled
(television or video re corder, ...). Refe r to th e list
supplied with th is user manual (see page subcodes
or codes).
1. Switc h on th e COMBO yo u wa nt to control.
2. Hold th e SETUP key down until th e key
corre sponding to th e last selected mode blinks and
then re mains lit.
3. Press th e key of th e fi rst device to control, and th en
follow one of th e programming meth ods A, B, C or
D prev iously described.
4. If a second code programming is requ ired, th en
repeat steps 2 and 3 above.
How to retrieve
a programmed code
It may be useful to re trieve th e code progra mmed in
the re mote control.
1. Hold down th e SETUP key until th e key th at
corre sponds to th e last mode yo u selected blinks
and th en re mains lit.
2. Press th e key th at corre sponds to th e type of
equipment yo u wa nt to control:
TV: te levision set, DVD : DV D player, SAT: sate llite
receiver , cable, DV BT, ADSL, AUX : any appliance.
3. Press th e SETUP key briefl y, so th at th e last mode
selected blinks once.
4. Press th e numbered key s in ascending order (0 to
9) until th e select ed mode blinks once.
5. The number th at caused th e selected mode to blink
is th e fi rst of th e fo ur numbers th at make up yo ur
code. Make a note of it below.
6. Re peat st ep 4 to fi nd out th e ot her numbers of th e
code.
7. When th e fo urth number has be en fo und, th e
indicator light fo r th e selected mode goes out.
Check of
the programming
- Fo r a te levision or a satellite re ceiver: switch on
and, fo r examp le, press 2 to ch ange ch annels.
- Vi deo re corder: load a ta pe and th en press B .
- DV D player: load a DV D and th en press B .
Try othe r re mote control key s to fi nd out th e ra nge of
functions yo u can control. If yo u th ink th at not all of th e
keys are active, try th e programming Method B or C .
When you have retrieved the code of your set, jot
it down so that you can use it whenever needed.
After battery replacement, you may have to
programme the remote control again.
Learning function
If th e make of th e device yo u wish to control is not in
the separate code list or if some functions are missing
in th e code yo u have progra mmed, yo u can copy
the key functions of the original re mote control of
the device int o yo ur RO C 4238. Depending on the
format of th e transmission codes of the original re mote
control, yo ur RO C 4238 re mote control can memor ise
up to 15 0 ke ys.
Global delete – Delete all the ke ys copied (this is
recommended the fi rst time you use this function)
1. Hold down th e SETUP key until th e key
corre sponding to th e last select ed mode re mains lit.
2. Re lease th e SETUP key .
3. Press twice on th e LEARN . key. The mode key goes
out and th en re lights.
4. Press once on th e SETUP key. The mode key goes
out afte r severa l seconds.
5. All th e copied keys ar e now delete d.
Before starting
• The batteries in th e 2 re mote controls must be in
good condition; ch ange th em if necessary.
• First copy 2 or 3 key s from th e original re mote
control in order to ch eck th e compatibility of th e
codes of bot h re mote controls. Then carry out a
global delete of th ese keys before star ting th e full
learning procedure.
• Lay out th e original re mote control and yo ur RO C
4238 end to end so as to align th e LED diodes
on th e 2 re mote controls. Where necessar y adjust
the height of bo th remote controls so th at the LED
diodes are properly aligned.
• Place th e re mote controls with th e infrared diodes
on a ta ble so th at they point eac h ot her at a
distance between 15 and 50 mm.
• Do not move th e re mote controls during th e
learning procedure.
• Ensure th at th e ro om is not lit by fl uorescents tubes
or low consumpt ion lamps since such light sources
can interfere wit h th e copying.
• The 2 re mote controls must be at least one metre
away from any light source.
• Av oid copying VO L and keys codes and th e play
keys since depending on th e re mote controls th e
codes of th ese keys do not necessar ily control th e
same devices.
• When th e memor y of yo ur RO C 4238 is full, th e
mode key will blink fo r 3 seconds. It is th en not
possible to copy any more codes wit hout fi rst
carry ing out a global de lete.
• When yo u copy a key , it is possible th at th e mode
key will blink fe ebly. In th is case, do not re lease th e
key and wa it until th e blinking stops.
Note 1: if th e learning procedure does not seem to
work corre ctly, tr y the following:
1. End th e learning procedure by pressing SETUP .
2. Check th at th e LEDs of th e two re mote controls
are properly aligned. Carry out th e alignment
procedure.
3. Modify th e dista nce between th e re mote controls,
increasing or re ducing th e dista nce from 1. 5 cm to
5 cm.
4. Restart th e procedure from th e beginning.
5. If th e problem persists and alway s with th e same
key, check th at th e original re mot e control is
actually operating: is it sending IR signals? (check
batteries; is it corre ctly aligned in re lation to th e
diode on yo ur RO C 4238?)
Note 2:
• Yo u cannot copy ke ys to th e LEARN SETUP and
MODE keys.
• All th e ke ys copied to a mod e will be deleted
if a 4 fi gure code is ent ered fo r th is mode (and
likew ise fo r direct entry of a code, search of a
code or make).
Identifying the position of the diode on the
original remote control (keys to copy)
If th e LED of th e original re mot e control is not visible
(for example, if hid den behind a dark plastic plat e),
the instructions below will help yo u to locat e it
precisely.
1. Place th e front of th e original re mote control (t he
part yo u point at th e device to control) around
2.5 cm from th e LED of yo ur RO C 4238 (see
LEARNING diagram above ).
2. Hold down th e SETUP key until th e key
corre sponding to th e last select ed mode re mains lit.
3. Re lease th e SETUP key.
4. Press once on a mode key (TC , DVD , AUX , …).
The key goes out and th en re lights.
5. Press once on th e LEARN key.
6. Hold down one of th e key s on th e or iginal re mote
control while moving th e re mote control from lef t
to right. As so on as th e 2 re mote controls are
corre ctly aligned, th e mode key blinks ra pidly.
7. To copy th e key functions from yo ur original re mote
control into yo ur RO C 4238, go to st ep 5 of “To
copy key s”.
Note: Some original re mote controls donʼ t transmit
continuous IR signals when a ke y is held down. If th is is
the case, press severa l times on on e of the ke ys while
moving th e re mot e control from left to ri ght.
To copy ke ys
1. Hold down th e SETUP k
ey until th e key

3. Press once on th e mode key ( TV , DVD , SAT , AUX ).

remote control.
6. Hold down th e key of th e original re mote control
you wish to copy until th e mode key goes out and
then re lights (2 to 3 seconds). In case of problems,
the mode key will blink fo r 3 seconds but will
remain in learning mode.Try again or tr y anoth er
key.
7. For th e ot her ke ys, re peat th e procedure from step
5 onward s.
8. Press th e SETUP key once when all th e desired
keys have been copied. The mode key goes off.
To delete all ke ys copied under a mode
1. Hold down th e SETUP key until th e key
corre sponding to th e last select ed mode re mains lit
2. Re lease th e SETUP key.
3. Press once on a mode key ( TV , DV D , SAT , AU X ).
The key goes out th en re lights.
4. Press twice on th e LEARN . key. The key goes out
then re lights.
5. Press once on th e SETUP key . The mode ke y
goes out. All th e key s copied under th is mode are
delete d.
Other functions
Placing all devices on standby
Press th e G ke y twice in less th an one second, ke eping
it held down th e second time. All th e devices go on
standby one afte r th e other (t he devices whic h were
already on St andby may tur n on).
Adjustment of ALL volume controls under a
specific mode
In its delivered state , th e RO C 4238 is progra mmed
such th at all modes wil l use th eir ow n Vo lume and
Mute functions if present.
You can allocate th e vo lume control to one of th e
modes of th e re mote control on condition th at th e
volume control ex ists on th e corre sponding device (e.g.
control of TV sound in TV mode, or DV D, …).
1. Hold th e SETUP key down until th e key
corre sponding to th e last select ed mode blinks and
then re mains lit.
2. Re lease th e SETUP key
3. Press th e H key until th e mode key blinks once.
