Creating your o wn CD program
(Program Play)

Presetting radio stations
Y ou can pr eset your favori te radio stations an d tune
them in instan tly by selecting the corresponding p reset
number .

repeatedly to select the desired
service name (DAB) or preset number (FM).
Note on presetting DAB sta tions
Y ou can preset a DAB service only when it can be receiv ed.
Recording onto a tape
Y ou can recor d on a TYPE I (normal) tape in two ways:
CD Synchro Rec ording:
Y ou can recor d an entire CD o nto a tape.
Manual Recording:
Y ou can recor d just the portions yo u like from a sound
source, inc luding connected audio co mponents.

Using the Timers
e system o ers three timer functions. Y ou cannot
activate both the Pla y Timer and the Rec Timer a t the
same time. If y ou use either with the Sleep Timer , the
Sleep Timer has p riority .
Sleep Timer:
Y ou can fall asleep to music. i s funct ion wor ks e ven if
the clock is not set.
Press S LEEP
on the remo te repeatedly . I f you select
“ A UT O, ” the sys tem auto matically turns o aer the
current disc or ta pe stops or in 100 minu tes.
Do not select “ A UTO ” during S ynchro Recording o f a
tape.
Play Timer :
Y ou can wake up t o CD, ta p e or tuner a t a preset time.
Rec Timer:
Y ou can recor d a preset radio statio n at a specied time.

correctly and rmly connected.
2 Find y our problem in the checklist below, and take
the indicated corrective action.

If the ST ANDBY indic ator ashes
Immedia tely unpl ug the p ower co rd, and check the
followin g item.
• If yo ur system has a voltag e s elector , is the vo ltage
selector set to the correct vol tage?
• Are yo u using only the sup plied spe akers?
• Is an ything blocking the ven ti lation ho les on the rear
of the system?
Aer the ST AND BY indicator s tops ashing,
reconnect the power co rd, and turn o n the system. If
the issue persists, con tact your nearest Son y dealer .
General
There is no sound .
• e specied station ma y have tem porarily stopped
broadcast.
Sound comes from one channel, or the left and
right volumes ar e unbalanced.
• Place the speakers as symmetrically as possible.
• Connect only the supp lied spe akers.
Severe hum or noise .
• Mo ve the system awa y from sources of n oise.
• Connect the system to a dieren t wall so cket.
• Install a noi s e lter (ava ilable separately) to the po wer
cord .
The remote does not function.
• Remove a ny obstacles between the remot e and the
remot e sensor
on the unit, a nd position the unit
awa y from uor escent lights.

CD/MP3 play er
The sound skips, or the disc will not play .
• W ipe the disc clean, and replace it.

examp le, on top of a s table stand).
• Mo ve the speakers away fr om the system, or place them
on separat e stands. A t high volume, speaker vibra tion
may ca use the s ound to ski p.
Play does not start from the rst track.
• Return to N ormal Play by pr essing PLA Y MO DE
repeatedly un til b oth “PGM ” and “S HUF ” disappear .
Starting playback takes more time than usual.
• e following di s cs take a longer time to s tart playback.
– a disc recor ded with a complica ted tree struc ture.
– a disc recor ded in multisession mode.
– a disc that has no t be en nalized (a disc to which data
can be added).
– a disc that has ma ny folders.
Tuner
Severe hum or noise , or stations cannot be
receiv ed.
• Connect the antenna p roperly .
• Find a locatio n and an orienta tion that pr ovide good
reception, a nd then set up the antenna aga in.
• Keep the an tenna awa y from the speaker cords and the
power cor d to avoid p icking up noise.
• Do not place the an tenna in front o f the system.
• T ur n o nearby electrical equipmen t.
“TUNED” does not appear in the display (D AB
only).
• Check all antenna co nnections, then perform the DAB
A utoma tic S can procedur e (see “B efore u sing the
system ”).
• e current D AB ser vice may not be a vailable. Pres s
+/– on the remo te (or TUNING +/– on the uni t)
to
select a dierent service.
• If yo u have mov ed to another area, some services/
frequencies ma y have chan ged and you ma y not be able
to tune in to your usual br oadcast.
P erform the DAB A uto matic Scan procedure t o
re-regist er the conten ts of broadcasts. (P erforming this
procedur e clears all previously s tored presets.)
T ape deck
The sound exhibits e xcessiv e wow or utter or
dropout.
•
Clean the capstans a nd pinch rollers. Also , clean and
demagnetize the tape heads. See “Preca utions ” for details.
T roubleshooting
T
o improv e tuner reception
T ur n o CD player po wer by using the CD power
managem ent function. By default, CD po wer is turned on.
Y ou cannot c hange the setting in P ower Savin g Mode.

1 Disconnect and reconnect the power cord , and then
turn on the system.

Notes on discs
• Before pla ying, wipe the disc with a cleaning cloth from
the center o ut to the edge.
• Do not clean discs with solven ts, such as benzine
thinner , or co mmercially available clea ners or anti-
static spra y intended fo r vinyl LPs.
• Do not expose discs to direct sunlight or hea t sources
such as hot a ir ducts, nor leave i t in a car parked in
direct sunlight.
On safety
• e unit is no t disconnected f rom the A C power source
(mains) as lo ng as it is connected to the wall socket,
even if the unit itself has been turned o.
• Complete ly disconnect the power cord (ma ins lead)
from the wall socket (mains) if i t is not going t o b e used
for an ext ended per iod of time. When un plugging the
unit, alwa ys gr ip the plug. N ever pull the cord itself .
• Should an y solid object or liquid get in to the system,
unpl ug the system, and hav e it checked by q ualie d
personnel befor e operating it again.
• e A C p ower co rd can be changed o nly by a qualied
ser vice facility .
On placement
• Do not place the system in an in clined position or in
locations tha t are extremely h ot, cold, dusty , dirty , o r
humid o r lacking adequate ven tilation, or subject to
vibra tion, direct sunlight or a bright ligh t.
• Be careful when placing the unit or speakers on s urfaces
that ha ve been spe cially treated (fo r example, wi th wax,
oil, polish) as stainin g or discoloratio n of the surface
may r esult.
• If the system is b rought dir ec tly from a cold to a wa rm
location or is p laced in a ver y damp room, mo isture
may co ndense on the lens inside the CD play er , and
cause the system to malfunction. I n this situation,
remo ve the disc, and leave the system t urned on for
about a f e w hours un til t he moist ure evaporat es.
On heat buildup
• Hea t buildup on the uni t during operation is no rmal
and is no t cause for alarm.
• Do not touc h the cabinet if it has been used
con tinuously a t a high volume because the cabinet ma y
have becom e hot.
• Do not obstruct the ventilatio n holes.
On the speaker syst em
is speaker system is not ma gnetica lly shielded, and
the picture o n nearby TV sets may become magnetically
distorted. I n this situation, t urn o the T V , wait 15 t o 30
minu tes, and turn it back on.
If there is n o impro vement, mo ve the speakers far awa y
from the TV .
Cleaning the cabinet
Clean this system with a so cloth sligh tly moistened
with a mild detergen t solution. Do not use an y type
of ab rasive pad, scouring powder , o r solvent, such as
thinner , benzine, or alcoho l.

Cleaning the tape heads
U se dr y- or wet-type cleaning cassette (a vailable
separatel y) aer ever y 10 hours of use, befo re you start an
importan t recording, or a er playing an o ld tape. Failur e
to clean the tape heads can ca use degraded s ound quality
or an ina bility of the unit to r ecord or pla y tapes. For
details, refer to the in struc tions of the cleanin g cassette.
Demagnetizing the tape heads
U se a demagnetizing cassette (a vailable separately) a er
every 20 to 30 hours of use. F ailure to demagnetize
the tape heads can cause an in crease in noise, a loss of
high frequency sound, and an ina bility to com pletely
erase tapes. For deta ils, refer to the instructions of the
demagnetizing cassette.
