This is the Quick Start Guide, which provides you with instructions on the basic operations of the IC r ecorder .
Please read it car efully . We hope you enjoy using your new Sony IC r ecorder .

These buttons and the jack have a tactile dot. Use it
as a refer ence point for oper ations, or t o identify each
terminal.

In this Quick S tart Guide, M2 and micr oSD cards ar e
generally r eferred to as a “memor y c ard. ” The M2 /
microSD car d slot is referr ed to as the “memory card
slot. ”
Note
The illustrations use d in this Quick Start Guide are based on the ICD-SX1000 model.
These illustrations may look diff erent from the model you ar e using, however , the buttons and c ontrols used for
operations ar e the same.
L et’ s try out your new IC r ecor der Utilizing Y our C omputer
Installing the help guide on your c omputer
By installing the help guide on your comput er from the built-in memory of the IC rec order , you can
search for de tailed operations and pos sible solutions when a problem occurs.
Slide the USB DIRECT slide lever on the back of the IC r ecorder , and insert the USB
connector int o the USB port of a running computer .
In Windows: Click [Computer] (or [My C omputer]), then double-click [IC REC ORDER]
[FOR WINDOWS].
In Mac: Double-click [IC REC ORDER] on the desktop.
Install the help guide.
In Windows: Double-click [Help_Guide_Installer] (or [Help_Guide_Installer .exe]).
In Mac: Double-click [Help_Guide_Installer_for_mac.app]. (v10.5 .8 or higher)
Follow the instructions that appear on the scr een to proc eed with installation.
After the installation c ompletes, double-click the [Help_Guide_icdsx3_uc.htm] ic on in the
desktop for Windows (or in Finder f or Mac).
The help guide is displayed.

C opying files fr om the IC r ecor der to your
c omputer
Y ou can copy the files and folders fr om the IC recor der to your computer t o store them.
Connect the IC r ecor der to your computer .
Copy files or f olders you want to transf er to your computer .
Drag and dr op the files or folders you want to c opy from “IC RECORDER” or “MEMORY CARD” to
the local disk on your comput er.
T o copy a file or folder (Dr ag and drop)

Click and hold,
drag,
and then drop.
Disconnect the IC r ecor der from your computer .
Installing Sound Or ganizer
Install Sound Organiz er on your computer .
Note
Sound Organiz er is compatible with the Windows PC only . It is not c ompatible with Mac.
¼ When installing Sound Organizer , log in to an ac count with administrat or privileges.
Slide the USB DIRECT slide lever on the back of the IC r ecorder , and insert the USB
connector int o the USB port of a running computer .
If the IC rec order cannot be c onnected to a comput er directly , use the supplied USB c onnection
support cable.
Make sur e the IC rec order has been re cognized pr operly .
While the IC rec order is connect ed to the computer , “Connecting” is displayed in the display
window of the IC rec order .
Go to the [Start] menu, click [Computer] (or [My Comput er]), and then double-click [IC
REC ORDER] [FOR WINDOWS].
Double-click [SoundOrganiz erInstaller_V140] (or [SoundOr ganizerInstaller_V140 .exe]).
Follow the instructions that appear on the scr een.
Make sur e that you acc ept the terms of the license agr eement, select [I accept the t erms
in the license agr eement], and then click [Next].
When the [Setup T ype] window appears, select [Standar d] or [Custom], and then click
[Next].
Follow the instructions on the scr een and set the installation settings when you select [Cust om].
When the [Ready to Install the P rogr am] window appears, click [Inst all].
The installation starts.
When the [Sound Organiz er has been installed succ essfully .] window appears, check
[Launch Sound Organiz er Now], and then click [Finish].
Note
Y ou may need to restart your comput er after installing Sound Organizer .
Note
If you format the built -in memory, all data stored ther e will be erased. (The Help Guide and the Sound Organizer
software will also be er ased.)
On power
Operat e the unit only on 3.7VDC with the built -in
rechar geable lithium-ion battery .
On safety
Do not oper ate the unit while driving, cycling or
operating an y motorized vehicle .
On handling
ˎ Do not leave the unit in a location near hea t
sourc es, or in a plac e subject to direct sunlight,
ex cessive dust or mechanical shock.
ˎ Should any solid object or liquid fall into the unit,
remove the batt er y and have the unit check ed by
qualified personnel befor e operating it any further .
If you have any questions or problems c oncerning
your unit, please consult your nearest Sony dealer .

Pr ecautions
1. Char ge.
Charge the IC r ecor der .
Slide the USB DIRECT slide lever in the dir ection of the arrow
(
-A), and inser t the USB connector int o the USB port of a
running computer (
-B).
Charging starts.
When the battery is fully charged, the battery indicator will
indicate “
.”
Disconnect the IC r ecor der .
Make sur e that the acces s lamp does not light. Then refer to the
help guide to remove the IC r ecorder saf ely .
2. P ower on.
T urn the power on.
Slide and hold the PO WER ON/OFF•HOLD switch in the direction
of “POWER ON/OFF” until the window display appears.
T o turn the power off, slide and hold the POWER ON/OFF•HOLD
switch in the dire ction of “P OWER ON/OFF” until the “Power Off”
animation is displayed.
¼ When you turn the power on again within 4 hours after the last time
you turned the power off, the power will come on quickly .
T o prevent unintentional oper ations (HOLD)
¼ T o release the IC re corder from the HOLD sta tus, slide the P OWER ON/
OFF•HOLD switch towar ds the center so that the pr ojection on the
switch is aligned to the “•“ mark.
3 . Set the dat e and time.
When the clock is not set, the “Se t Date&Time” animation appears,
then the “Set Date&Time?” confirmation message appears.
Press or to select “Y es, ” and then press (play/ent er).
The year section begins to flash.
Press or to set the year (the last two digits of the year),
and then pres s (play/enter). Repeat this proc edure to
set month, day , hour , and minute in sequence .
When you set the minute and pr ess (play/enter), the clock
reflects the se tting.
4. Select the display language.
Pr ess MENU.
Press , press or t o select , and then press
(play/enter).
Press or to select “Language, ” and then pr ess (play/
enter).
Press or to select the language that you w ant to use in
the display window , and then press (play/ent er).
Y ou can select the following languages:
English*, Español (Spanish), Français (F rench)
* Default setting
Press ST OP .
5 . Recor d.
¼ Before you start using the IC rec order , make sure that you slide
the PO WER ON/OFF•HOLD switch towards the c enter so that the
projection on the switch is aligne d to the “•“mark to release the HOLD
status.
Place the IC r ecor der so that the built-in micr ophones face
the direction of the sour ce to be r ecor ded.
Press REC/P AUSE.
Recor ding starts and the recor ding lamp ( ) lights in red.
¼ Y ou can pause rec ording by pressing RE C/P AUSE. Press RE C/
P AUSE again to restart rec ording.
Press ST OP ( -A) to stop r ecor ding.
The acc ess lamp ( -B) flashes in orange and the re cording
stops.
6 . Listen.
Press (play/enter).
Playback starts.
Adjust the volume by pres sing VOL –/+.
Press ST OP to stop playback.
7 . Er ase.
Onc e a file is erased, you cannot rest ore it.
Pr ess ERASE.
“Erase?” is displayed and the file to be erased is played back f or
confirmation.
Select “Execut e” using or , and then pr ess (play/
enter).
The “Erasing…” animation appears while the selected file is
being erased.
