INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISPOSAL – OUR ENVIRONMENTAL CARE
Non-polluting materials are used in the packaging of our fridge freezers to ensure that they are environmentally
friendly and recyclable. Please help by disposing of the packing correctly. Ask your supplier or the relevant
organisations in your area for the addresses of collection, recycling and disposal centres.
Do not throw the packing or any part of it away. It can present a risk of suffocation for children, especially in the case
of plastic bags.
Your old appliance also needs to be disposed of correctly.
Important: hand over your appliance to the local agency authorised for the collection of electrical appliances no
longer in use. Proper disposal will enable valuable materials to be recovered. Refrigeration appliances contain gases
that can be harmful to the environment, so you need to ensure that the tubes in the coolant loop are not damaged
before the competent organisation takes the appliance away.
Before disposing of your fridge it is important to remove doors and leave shelves in position as for use, to ensure that
children cannot accidentally become trapped inside during play. The power grid connection cable must also be
removed and disposed of separately together with the plug.
THIS APPLIANCE IS IDENTIFIED IN ACCORDANCE WITH EUROPEAN DIRECTIVE 2002/96/EC ON
WASTE ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT (WEEE).
THIS GUIDELINE IS THE FRAME OF A EUROPEAN-WIDE VALIDITY OF RETURN AND RECYCLING
ON WASTE ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT.

4. INSTALLATION AND CONNECTION
4.1 Choice of location
Always locate the fridge freezer in a dry, sufficiently ventilated area. Ensure that it is not directly
exposed to the sun's rays and do not locate it outside (for example: an unheated room or a balcony).
Do not cover the ventilation slots on the upper part: good air circulation must be maintained inside the
appliance. There must be a distance of at least 10 cm between the upper part of the body of the
appliance and any furniture unit placed above it (Fig. 1). Do not locate the fridge freezer near a heat
source. If this is unavoidable, in order to prevent the proper operation of the product from being
compromised, a suitable insulation board must be used. Otherwise, locate the appliance at least 3 cm
away from electrical or gas cookers and at least 30 cm away from combustion heaters or radiators. If this
requirement is not observed the appliance will consume more electricity and its compressor may
overheat.
If the appliance in positioned in a corner, a space of at least 1 cm must be left between the body of the
appliance and the wall, so that the door of the freezer compartment (1) can be opened enough to allow
the freezer drawer (2) to be pulled out (see Fig. 1).
The appliance must be placed on a flat surface and must not be in contact with the wall.
Depending on the climate class to which it belongs (indicated on the identification plate inside the
fridge), the appliance can be used in various temperature conditions:
Class Room temperature
SN (Subnormal) from + 10°C to + 32°C
N (Normal) from + 16°C to + 32°C
ST (Subtropical) from + 18°C to + 38°C
T (Tropical) from + 18°C to + 43°C
Take care when installing the appliance on parquet or linoleum to avoid scratching or otherwise
damaging the floor. If necessary, when positioning the fridge freezer, use pieces of wood or carpet to
slide it to the appropriate point for connection to the power grid.

Instructions for the installer
34
4.2 Preparing the appliance for use
It is recommended to prepare the appliance for use with the help of another person.
- Remove the packaging.
- Lift up the appliance in order to remove the polystyrene base.
- Remove the adhesive tape.
- Remove all the systems for holding the shelves in place (Fig. 2 pos. 2). Remove all the adhesives
from the object holder shelves: they are only necessary for the transport of the appliance.
- NOTE: When the fridge compartment door is opened a small red-coloured packing component will
fall out: THIS IS ONLY NECESSARY FOR TRANSPORT.
- Dispose of the packaging materials appropriately.
- To ensure that the condenser cools properly, the top part of the fridge freezer must not be located too
close to the wall. To avoid this, the product is equipped with two plastic spacers (Fig. 2 pos. 1) which
must be mounted on the upper part of the condenser at the back of the appliance as shown in figure 2.
Fig. 2
Instructions for the installer
35
4.3 Positioning and levelling the appliance
When positioning the product, ensure that it does not damage the supply cable.
Two rollers are provided on the base of the product at the back (Fig. 3) to make it more stable and easier
to move, and therefore to make it possible to position it properly. However, you are advised to be very
careful when moving the product so that the sliding motion does not damage the floor (e.g. if the fridge
freezer is placed on a parquet floor).
Place the fridge freezer on a stable, level base. The fridge freezer is equipped with two adjustable feet at
the front (Fig. 4) to compensate for any irregularities in the flooring. In case of necessity, adjust the
height of the appliance by screwing the adjustable feet in or out (Fig. 4): turn them clockwise to raise the
front part of the appliance, or turn them counter-clockwise to lower it. Leaning the appliance towards the
rear part facilitates correct closing of the doors.
Fig. 3 Fig. 4
If the feet are not high enough to stabilise the fridge freezer (e.g. if the floor is very uneven), or to tilt it
backwards, a shim made of a rigid material (plastic or wood) will need to be inserted underneath the feet
in order to further raise the front of the appliance.
A proper installation will allow the doors to close properly. A check must be made to ensure that the door
seals close hermetically, especially at the corners. If they do not close properly, check to make sure that
there are no product processing residues or packaging residues between the seal and the fridge freezer
doors. If necessary, adjust the seals with your fingers as in figures 5 and 6.
Attention:
Force should not be used in adjusting the seals. Do not tear or detach the seals from the doors.
A few days after installation, check that the initial level adjustment is still correct. Make sure that the
fridge freezer is still stable and the door seals still close hermetically when it is in operation and loaded
with food. If necessary, re-adjust the level and the door seals as shown below.
Instructions for the user
36
Fig. 5 Fig. 6
4.4 Electrical connection
Leave the fridge freezer in a vertical position for at least two hours before turning it on for the first time.
Connect the supply cable of the appliance to an earthed electrical socket, installed in accordance with
electrical safety standards. The nominal voltage and frequency are indicated on the identification plate
inside the fridge freezer. The appliance must be connected to the power grid and earthed in accordance
with the applicable standards and requirements. The appliance can withstand brief voltage changes of
no less than 15% and no more than 10% of the nominal voltage stated on the identification plate. If the
supply cable needs to be changed, this procedure must only be carried out by an authorised
technician from Smeg's technical support service.
The plug must be accessible when the appliance is installed.

the door from being closed properly.
Fig. 10
5.6 Fridge cell defrosting water drain
At the back of the fridge cell, under the refrigeration plate, there is a groove and a hole for collecting the
water from defrosting. This opening must not be obstructed if the fridge is to work correctly. You are
therefore advised to check it and clean it regularly using a rigid metal wire.
5.7 Fruit and vegetable drawer
This container is positioned in the lower part of the fridge cell where there is a special glass shelf to
cover fresh foods that require constant humidity conditions for proper storage.
5.8 Door ledges and containers
On the inside of the fridge door there are ledges and trays for storing eggs, butter, dairy products, tubes,
conserves and other small packages. The lower part of the door has a container for standing bottles
upright.
All the door ledges and trays can be removed for cleaning. To remove them from the door, by tapping

6. ARRANGING AND STORING FOODS IN THE FRIDGE CELL
7. ARRANGING AND STORING FOODS IN THE FREEZER
Arrange the foods on the various shelves/compartments, taking care to pack and cover them in such a
way that they are hermetically sealed. This precaution ensures that:
- the flavour, moisture and freshness of the foods can be preserved;
- any contamination of foods with odours or tastes from other foods can be avoided.
- excessive accumulation of moisture in the compartment can be avoided, due to normal transpiration
of foods (in particular fresh fruit and vegetables), which in certain operating conditions (increase in
ambient temperature and humidity, increased frequency of door opening) could lead to the formation
of condensation on the shelves.
Only use containers suitable for keeping food. Always allow hot foods and drinks to cool at room
temperature before putting them in the compartment.
Do not keep explosive substances in the appliance and only keep drinks with a high alcohol content in it
if they are properly closed and kept vertical.
You must always strictly observe the expiry date for food indicated by the manufacturer on the product
packaging.

8. USING THE FRIDGE FREEZER
8.1 Switching on the fridge freezer
Note
Clean the inside of the fridge and the freezer before use.
- Plug in the plug
- Turn the selector switch (1) to position ” “.
- Wait at least 24 hours.
- Insert the foods in the fridge and/or the freezer.
Fig. 13
Note
It normally takes about 24 hours before the storage temperature inside the fridge and the
freezing temperature inside the freezer are reached. The surrounding temperature, the frequency
with which the door is opened and the location of the appliance can affect the internal
temperature of the freezer and therefore the amount of time required to reach operating
temperature.
Note
Reopening the freezer door immediately after closing it may be difficult. Please wait 2 or 3
minutes to enable the low pressure which has formed to be compensated for.
8.2 Adjustment and selection of the cooling temperature
The selector located in the upper part of the fridge and visible when the door is open is used to adjust
the cooling temperature inside the fridge compartment.
Attention
Position corresponds to turning off the fridge freezer (the appliance is still supplied with
electricity but the green light will be off).
The operational settings range from “ “ to “ .
Select the internal temperature according to your needs! Increasing the size of the “ ” symbol
corresponding to the regulation reduces the temperature inside the fridge. Select the maximum settings
only if necessary: in these positions, in fact, temperatures close to 0° C can be reached in the fridge cell,
resulting in increased energy consumption. In normal usage conditions you are advised to select a
medium-low setting for proper conservation of fresh foods in the refrigeration zone.
Attention
Adjustment of the internal temperature of the freezer zone is controlled automatically and is
independent of the adjustments of the refrigeration zone.
Instructions for the user
43
Important
Changes in climate conditions (temperature and humidity), the amount of food stored and its
temperature as well as how often the doors are opened can all influence the operating
temperatures of the fridge freezer.
Therefore, we recommend you to take the following measures:
• position the appliance far away from heat sources,
• do not put foods that are warmer than room temperature in the appliance,
• do not leave the doors open,
• do not leave the doors open a longer time than is necessary to place or remove foods. ! IF THE
ENVIRONMENT IS COLD, THE APPLIANCE WILL CHILL LESS. THE INTERNAL TEMPERATURE
OF THE APPLIANCE COULD THEREFORE INCREASE. Use the thermostat selector to select a
lower temperature.
Instructions for the user
44
9. FREEZING FOODS
To keep and freeze foods properly, you are advised to pack fruit and vegetables in portions of no more
than 1 kg and meat and fish in portions of up to 2 kg. Smaller food packages freeze more quickly which
means that the foods' nutritional and taste properties are preserved better, even after defrosting and
preparation. Only use suitable freezer bags, tinfoil, cling-film for use with food, and freezer containers.
Do not use paper bags, cellophane bags for non-food use and shopping bags or pre-used freezer bags.
Package foods in hermetically sealed packages, attempting to ensure that all air is expelled. If using
bags, close them with suitable elastic bands or wire ties. Always allow hot foods to cool down at room
temperature before putting them in the freezer and ensure that foods which are already frozen do not
come into contact with fresh foods for freezing. Always write the date of freezing, the quantity and
product on the package, and make sure that foods are fresh and whole. The maximum quantity of fresh
foods which can be frozen within a 24-hour period is indicated on the identification plate. Do not exceed
the quantity specified: this can have a negative effect on the efficiency of the freezer and the capacity to
preserve the deep-frozen foods which are already in it.
Foods must be fresh, ripe and of good quality. Fresh fruit and vegetables must be frozen immediately
after picking, where possible, in order to maintain their nutrients, shape, texture, colour and flavour.
It is advisable to hang meat and game for a sufficient period before freezing it.
Consume defrosted or partially defrosted foods immediately. Do not refreeze them unless the defrosted
food is for use in preparing a ready meal. Once cooked, the defrosted food can be refrozen.
Do not refreeze partially defrosted foods; these must be consumed within 24 hours.
Keep temperature variations to a minimum.
You must always strictly observe the expiry date for food indicated by the manufacturer on the product
packaging.
The freezer contains a drawer for quick freezing (Fig. 7 pos. 12). Fresh foods prepared for freezing must
be placed on one or more levels in the quick freeze drawer. After 24 hours, the frozen products must be
moved from the quick freezing drawer to the storage drawers (Fig. 7 pos. 13).
Leave a space of no less than 3 cm between the various foods being frozen and the upper dividing
surface.
Do not freeze drinks containing carbon dioxide.
Do not freeze liquid foods in glass containers or bottles.
9.1 Keeping deep-frozen foods
When buying deep-frozen foods, always make sure that the packaging is not damaged, the expiry date of
the product is not past and the thermometer of the freezer in which the food is displayed for sale does not
indicate a temperature above –18°C. Also note the manufacturer's instructions regarding temperature,
period for which the food can be kept and consumption methods. You are also advised to protect the foods
you have bought with suitable insulated containers during transport to avoid defrosting. A temperature
increase may reduce the period for which the food can be kept and affect the quality of it.
Do not buy deep-frozen products covered in large amounts of frost: they may have already been defrosted.
Important
To find out how long fresh frozen foods can be kept, see the table below. All the figures given
refer to the product operating without eutectic salts.
Instructions for the user

Attention
To avoid any alterations in the quality of frozen foods, do not exceed the permitted storage
period, which varies depending on the type of food.
9.2 Defrosting deep-frozen foods
You are advised to consume partially defrosted foods as soon as possible. Low temperatures preserve
the foods but do not destroy the microorganisms which become active after defrosting, potentially
leading to a deterioration in the products. If the smell and appearance of defrosted foods appears to be
unchanged, they can be cooked and potentially refrozen after they have cooled.
To defrost frozen foods correctly, depending on the type of food and the intended use, they can be
defrosted at room temperature, in the fridge, in an electric oven (static or fan-assisted oven function) or
in a microwave oven using the appropriate function.
9.3 Making ice cubes
Fill the tray provided 3/4 full with cold drinking water or any other liquid that you wish to freeze. Put it in
the top drawer of the freezer, checking that the base is dry to ensure that it does not stick to the drawer.
If the tray gets stuck to the bottom of the drawer, do not use pointed or sharp objects to remove it. To
remove the ice cubes, leave them at room temperature for 5 minutes, then twist the tray slightly or put it
under running water for a few seconds.
Instructions for the user
46
10. MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING
10.1 Defrosting the fridge cell
The refrigerator compartment is equipped with automatic defrosting. During normal fridge operation frost
forms on the rear wall while the compressor is working, and melts when it is not working. While the
compressor is not working, the accumulated frost on the rear wall melts and the water runs off into the
opening for this purpose at the bottom of the cell. It is then channelled into the tray on the compressor,
from which it evaporates.
Attention
the formation of ice on the rear wall can vary depending on changes in climate conditions (temperature
and humidity), how often the door is opened, the operating temperatures of the machine, the amount of
fresh food contained (in particular fruit and vegetables).
10.2 Defrosting the freezer
The freezer compartment needs to be defrosted manually. You are recommended to carry out defrosting
every 6 months or whenever the thickness of the frost or ice on the shelves reaches 7 mm. Remove the
plug from the electricity supply (or turn of the mains switch). Open the door of the freezer and remove all
frozen foods from the drawers, and protect them from thawing during cleaning (frozen foods will not heat
up too much during defrosting of the freezer if they are covered with a thick cloth and stored in a cool
place). Leave the freezer door open to allow the frost to melt. Pull out the drain (Fig. 14 pos. 1) for
channelling the defrosted water, rotate it 180° and secure it as indicated in Fig. 15. Position a container
(Fig. 15 pos. 2) (not supplied) under the drain to catch the water from the defrosting. Place a dish under
the defrosting channels. When the ice melts, clean and dry the surfaces and parts of the freezer
compartment. At the end of defrosting, extract the drain (Fig. 14 pos. 1) for channelling the defrosted
water, turn it back 180° and replace it in its original position. Close the door of the freezer compartment.
Reconnect the plug (or set the mains switch to ON). Turn the fridge freezer back on using the selector on
the control panel.
Attention
During defrosting of the freezer, open the fridge door as little as possible to avoid sudden increases in
the temperature inside the fridge.

10.3 Cleaning the fridge freezer
Clean the appliance regularly. Before cleaning, remove the plug from the electric socket (or turn off the
main switch). To clean the outside of the freezer, use water and a gentle liquid detergent only, or a
detergent for general use on washable surfaces (e.g. a detergent for use on glass). Do not use abrasive
or corrosive cleaners for cleaning the door glazing (e.g. cleaning powders, stain-removers, wire
sponges). Do not use rough or abrasive materials or sharp metal scrapers to clean the glass doors since
they may scratch the surface and cause the glass to shatter. Do not use products containing abrasive or
aggressive substances for plastic or enamelled parts, or acids or chemical solvents. Use a sponge or a
soft cloth. Do not use cloths or sponges with a rough surface suitable for scouring.
Do not use steam cleaners inside the freezer; we advise you to use gentle liquid detergents intended for
washable surfaces, ideally disinfectants, provided that they do not contain solvents or aggressive
substances and/or abrasive particles.
Protect the internal surfaces and plastic parts of the appliance from fats, acids and sauces. In case of
accidental leaks, clean immediately with warm soapy water or washing up liquid.
Please note that our Technical Support Centres can provide Smeg products specifically intended for
cleaning these appliances. Do not use knives or objects that could damage the freezer circuit.
Remove the shelves, drawers and door accessories, taking care not to force them when taking them out.
Carefully follow the instructions in the section “Door ledges and containers”. Do not wash removable
plastic parts in the dishwasher, just use lukewarm water or a water and vinegar mixture. Do not allow the
electrical lighting parts to come into contact with water or detergents.
Use lukewarm water to clean the seals.
Periodically clean out the defrosting channel with detergent for this purpose.
After cleaning, dry both the internal and external parts of the fridge freezer.
To ensure that the fridge freezer functions properly,
you will also need to clean the condenser at the
back periodically, using a brush, a soft brush, an
electrostatic cloth or a vacuum cleaner (Fig. 16 pos.
1).
Fig. 16
Periodically, at least once a year, also examine the
tray above the compressor and, if necessary, clean it.
Fig. 17
10.4 Switching off the fridge freezer
If the fridge freezer is to remain out of use for a long time, turn the thermostat knob to . Then
empty the units, disconnect the freezer from the electricity supply and, once it has defrosted, dry off any
residual moisture that may have accumulated. Leave the door ajar to ensure that moisture and stagnant
air do not cause unpleasant odours.

10.5 Practical energy saving advice
- Install the fridge freezer in a cool, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and heat sources;
- Do not put hot food in the fridge or freezer. Wait until food and drinks have cooled to room
temperature before putting them on the shelves/in the drawers;
- Reduce the number of times that the door(s) is/are opened and the length of time they remain open
to prevent the units from heating up excessively;
- Clean the condenser (at the back of the fridge freezer) periodically to prevent any loss of efficiency of
the appliance;
- If the fridge is unused for a long period, it is advisable to empty the appliance and turn it off.
- Thaw frozen foods in the fridge compartment in order to recover cold accumulated from the frozen
food so that it can be transferred to the fridge cell.
10.6 Practical advice and observations
- Do not keep bananas in the fridge: they are sensitive to the cold.
- Do not store cooked and pre-cooked ("instant") foods in the same container.
- Store strong-smelling foods (e.g. fresh fish, pate de foie gras and cheese) in a hermetically sealed
container.
- Frozen foods should be thawed in the fridge compartment. Foods thawed slowly preserve their
flavour better and the cold released helps top maintain the selected temperature in the fridge
compartment.
- Do not ingest the ice formed directly on the walls of the freezer compartment.
- Products will be freeze more quickly if separated into small portions.
- Leave the doors open whenever you intend to leave the appliance switched off for a long period.
10.7 Noises during operation
The fridge freezer cools by means of a compression system. To maintain the selected temperature
inside the units, the compressor starts to function and, depending on the cooling level requested, it may
function continuously if need be. When the compressor starts to function, it creates a buzzing, bubbling
or humming noise, which generally diminishes in intensity after a few minutes. Another sound linked to
the normal operation of the fridge is a gurgling noise resulting from the movement of coolant within the
coolant loop tubes. This noise is normal and does not indicate an appliance malfunction. Stronger
sounds, like blasts or snaps may be heard for a short time while the compressor of the refrigerator is
starting up. If it becomes too loud, this may mean that there are other causes. Checks must then be
made to ensure that:
- the fridge freezer is level on the floor and the compressor does not vibrate during operation: if this is
not the case, adjust the feet provided;
- The drawers, shelves and trays on the door are positioned correctly in their holders: if they are not,
put them in correctly;
- Bottles and containers in the various shelves/drawers are placed in a stable manner and are
not in contact with each other: otherwise, the vibration resulting from the compressor's operation
could cause a certain amount of noise;
- Do not place the fridge in such a way that it is in contact with furniture or other household
appliances.
10.8 Identifying and eliminating any operating faults
Your new fridge freezer has been designed and manufactured based on rigorous quality standards. The
aim of this section is to enable you to identify the origin of any operating fault that may arise before
contacting Smeg's technical support service.

10.9 Replacing the inside light
Before replacing the bulb, make sure that its failure to operate is not simply because it has become loose
inside the lamp holder. In any case, whether you wish to check that the bulb is inserted correctly or you
wish to change it, for safety reasons, you must first remove the plug from the power outlet (or turn
of the main switch).
Fig. 18
To replace the inside light bulb (1) carry out the following steps in the order provided below:
- Press the sides of the lightning device cover (2) in order to release the fastenings of the cover A and
pull it downwards (3). Remove the cover (4).
- Replace the bulb with another 15 W bulb of the same type, with the bulb holder E14 .
- Once you have replaced the light bulb, put the closing hook of the cover in position B and press
upwards until it is properly secured.
- Connect the appliance to the electrical power outlet (or switch on the main switch).

preventing the door from closing
properly; also check that the fridge
freezer is properly level on the
floor;
- check that the seal is closing
properly and is not damaged.
Problems opening the door
immediately after it has been closed:
- if you try to reopen the door
immediately after it has been
closed, you will need to exert
considerable force. This is due to
the low pressure created by the
cooling of the warm air which has
entered the freezer.
