the

Huil
Transducer
Kit
is
provided
with
a
push-
out
insert
making
it
suitable
for
the
stem
diameter
of
bath
the
Sea
farer
600
and
the
Seafarer
3/4
transducers.
This
methad
of
installation
has the
dual
advantage
that
na
hole is
made
in
the
vesse['s
huil
and
that
the echo
sounder
and
transducer
can
easily
be
removed
for
examination
or
installation
eJsewhere.
It
should
be
mentioned
however,
that
although
the
accuracy
will in
na
way
be
atIected
by installing the
transducer
inside
the
huiL the
maximum
range sensitivity may be reduced
depending
upon
the thickness
and
quality
of
the glass-tibre.
We
do
not
recommend
ihis
methad
of
installation
if
the
thickness
of
the glass-
libre exceeds three-q uariers
of
an
inch.
Neither
do we
recommend
its use in hul!s
of
wood, steel
Or
aluminium,
although
this
methad
of
installa-
tion has been
found
accepiable
with
these
materials
in
same
cases.

FLUSH MOUNTING
An
alternative
method
of
mounting
is to fully
recess the
instrument
into
a
panel
or
bulkhead
using a flush
mounting
nange.
The
template
provided
with
the
operating
booklet
may
be used
for
making
the
appropriate
cut
out
in the
bulkhead.
Remove
the two
plastic
side
mounting
knobs
and
cut
the
projecting
screw
threads
back
to the metal
flange
on
each
sicle
of
the
instrument
case.
Fit
the plastic
mounting
beze! to tbe
instrument
by
slacking the
four
fixing screws
at
the
rear
of
the
case sufficient to allow the be zei (which is
in
two
halves)
to
be
slipped
in between
the
front
panel
and
the case.
Re-tighten
the
four
screws
trapping
the
bezel in position.
The
instrument
can
now
be
pushed
into
the
cutout
in
the
bulkhead
from
the
front
and
secured with
eight
counter
sunk
SCIews
in
the
bez
e!.

dimensions
of
the
Seafarer
600
for
mounting
purposes
are
shown
in Fig.
3.

The
instrument
may
be
powered
by
either
an
internal
battery
or
ship's
supply
of
nominal
12/
24
or
32
volts
D.e.
without
adjustment.
The
rear
battery
compartment
cover
must
be remov
ed
to
allow access to the connections.
If
the
instru-
ment
is to
be
powered
from
the
ship's
supply,
attention
is
drawn
to
the
fa ct
that

internal

terminals
MUST
remain
stowed
in
their
stowage position.

will
not
operate

The
charac-
teristic
return
echo
from
a sea bed
of
this
type
wi
II
be
shown
as a firm flash
or
light
on
the
dial
at
the
appropriate
depth.
On
the
other
hand,
deep
mud
or
large
amounts
of
keI
p wil! give a
weaker
reflection
and
produce
a
wider
more
in-
dterminate
flash.
With
practice
it
is
therefore
possible
to
ascertain
not
only
the
actual
depth
,
bul
also
the
type
of sea bed.
Under
normal
condi
tions
the
Seafarer
600
is
of
ample
power
to
reach
the
maximum
depth
of
100
falhoms
(200
metres)
marked
on
the
dial.
DEPTH ALARM OPERATION
An
audio
alarm
is
provided
on
the
instrument
10
give a waflling
when
the
depth
of
water
below
the
transducer
falls
below
a
pre-set
level.
To
set
the
depth
at
which
the
alarm
operates,
th
e
"alarm"
control
is
rotated
clockwise until
the
forward
edge
of
the
flashing
alarm
depth
indicator
on
the
dial
corresponds
to
the
depth
of
water
below
the
transducer
for
which
a
warning
is
Iequired.

recommended

NOISE SUPPRESSION CONTROL
This
switch
introduces
a su
ppression
circuit
to
reduce the effect
of
electrical
interference
on the
echo
sounder
from
ignition
systems,
generators
and
electrical
equipment
generally.
The
control
should
'be
used
sparingly
and
it
is
recommended
that
the
"high
power"
output
position
be
·.
selected
first
before
resorting
to
the use
of
the
noi
se
suppression
switch
in
an
electrically
noisy
envir-
onment.
With
"
high"
power
output
from
the
transducer
the
receiver
sensitivity
or
"ga
in"
can
be
reduced
, thus
reducing
the effect
of
interfer-
ence.
It
should
be
noted
that
when the
suppress
switch
is set to
"on"
the
brilliance
of
the
LED
Aash
on
the
dial is
reduced
on the
'B
' range.

REPEAT METER (Optional Extra)
GlARANTEE
AND
SERVICE
Insiallation,
The
Repeat
Meter
may
be flush
mounted
in
the
cockpit
or
other
suitable
position
for use
by
the
helmsman
or
navigator.
The
outline
dimensions
of
the
repeat
meter
are
given
in
Figure
5.
A
suitable
sealing
compound
should be used to
ensure
a
watertight
seal
in
tbe
bulkhead.
Connect
the 3-core
cable
from
the
repeat
meter
to
the
main
instrument
asshown
in
the
tablc
below.
The
cable
may be extended
by
using
a
normal
3-way terminal
block
and
3-core 5
amp
cable as necessary.
Care
should
be
taken
that
the
terminal
block
is fully
protected
against
the
ingress of water.

Repeat
Meter

with a 12 volt 3 watt wedge base
lamp
type
VTY504 with a
push-in
holder
and
short
red
and
black
flying lead connectors. These leads
should
be
connected

The
repeat
meter
is
provided
with three
depth
scales
similar
to
those
of
the
instrument.
The
scales
may
be
independently
selected
provided
that
the
main
instrument
is on a
de
eper
range
than
that
required
on
the
repeater.

is
recom-
mended
that
the
Seafarer
600
be
set
to
the
deep
range
scale "c"
and
the
"gain"
adjusted
to give
a
good
solid echo.
This
eliminates
as
far
as
possible
the
need
to
keep
re-setting the
"gain"
co
ntrol
as the
depth
increases.
With
the
ma
in
instrument
on
range
"C"
the
minimum
depth
reading
is
approximateJy
6 feet (2 metres). Switch-
ing to ranges
"A
"
or
"B"
reduces the
minimum
depth
reading
to
approximateJy
3 feet (I metre).
The
minimum
depth
is
Jimited by a
bubble
suppre
ion
circuit
in
the
instrument
to
pre
ve
nt
faJse
readings
caused by
air
bubbles
in the
vicinity
of
the
transducer.
The

600
is
fully
guaranteed
under
the
conditions
as
stated
on
the
guarantee
card
sup-
plied

the
instrument.

Routine
Maintenance.
Tbe
transducer
should
be
examined
periodically
and
if
fitted olltside the
hull
a
thin
coat
of
hard
anti-fouling
paint
should
be
applied
to
the
face
of
the
trans
ducer
with a
soft
brush,
care
being
taken
not
to
trap
air
bubbles
under
the
paint.
A
build-up
of
barnacles
and
other
marine
encrusta-
tion
on
the
face
of
the
transducer
will
cause
pro-
gressive
deterioration
of the
instrument
maximum
depth
capability.
Barnacles
should
be
removed
by
crushing
between a
pair
of
pliers
and
not
tug-
ged off as
tr
.e
transducer
face may
become
irre-
parably
damage~1.
Particles
of
imbedded
shell
can
be dissolved by
applying
a
20%
solution
of
dilute
hydrochloric
acid
,
and
be rinsed oft
with
fresh water.
If
an internal
battery
is fitted, this
should
be
examin
ed
periodically
for
acid
leakage
and
replaced as necessary.
The
battery
should
be
removed if the
instrument
is
not
used
for
an
ex-
tended period.
The
transducer

clean

protected

sea water.
