Glossary of terms (Cont.)
JPEG (Joint Photographic
Experts Group)
A compression format for color still
images. Photographs (images)
shot using this camera are
recorded onto the card in JPEG
format when the Record mode is
set to SHQ, HQ or SQ. By
downloading these images to a
personal computer, users can edit
them using graphics application
software or view the images using
an Internet web browser.
M (Manual) Mode
The user sets both the aperture
and shutter speed.
P (Program) Mode
Also called Program AE mode. The
camera automatically sets the best
shutter speed and aperture for the
shot.
PAL (Phase Alternating Line)
In Europe, PAL television signals
are normally used. North America
and Japan use NTSC signals.
Pixels
A pixel is the smallest unit (dot)
used to make up an image. Clear
large-sized printed images require
millions of pixels.
S (Shutter Priority) Mode
Also called Shutter Priority AE
mode. The user selects the shutter
speed and the camera automatically
varies the aperture so that the
picture is taken with the best
exposure.
TFT (Thin-Film Transistor) Color
Monitor
A transistor color monitor constructed
using thin-film technology.
TIFF (Tagged Image File Format)
A format used for saving highly
detailed black and white or color
image data. TIFF image files can
be handled by software programs
for scanners and graphics
applications. This camera uses
TIFF as an uncompressed image
file format.
TTL (Through-The-Lens) System
To help adjust exposure, a light
receptor built into the camera
directly measures the light passing
through the lens.
