Charging the Battery
The easiest way to charge the battery is to connect the device to a computer
using the included USB cable.
Is it charging?
You can tell if the device is charging by looking at the main LED indicator above
the screen. While the battery is charging, the LED will be orange. As soon as
the battery is fully charged, it will turn to green.
If your device is turned off and you plug it in, the device and LED will turn on. If
your device is attached to the USB and you decide to turn it off, both the screen
and main LED will turn off but the device will remain charging.
How long should it charge?
The rst time you charge the battery, it should charge longer than necessary in
order to extend the lifetime of the battery. When the device is turned off, it will
take approximately 3 hours to charge a completely empty battery. If you are
using the device while it is charging, it will take longer to charge.

Battery Tips
To stretch the most out of the battery, you can turn the stylus

, lights, and sound off.
Learn more about these in Settings.
Turning the Device On and Off
Once the device has been charged, it is ready to be turned on and used. If the
battery was fully empty when you began charging, the device will turn itself on
when it can be used.
Turn the Device On
Place your nger on the Ì sensor below the screen until you hear a beep
(approximately 1½ seconds), and then remove your nger
The screen will turn on and the device will begin starting up; you will see a start up Ì

Choose Ì Menu>Turn Off from the bottom row in the menu. The device will start to

Using the Sensors
The type of sensors used in the Digital Reader are called capacitive sensors.
These work by sensing your ngertip through the plastic. This means that you
don’t need to apply any pressure on the sensors; the contact of your skin to
the plastic is enough. Next to each sensor is a small green LED that will let you
know that it has sensed your nger and you will also hear a beep.
Terms
In the rest of this manual, the terms ‘Tap’, ‘Long Press, ‘Hold’, and ‘Cancel’ will
be referred to when describing how to touch the sensors.
Tap – is when you quickly touch a sensor with your nger. Technically speaking,
your nger must touch the sensor between 0 and ½ a second
User Manual - iRex Digital Reader 1000 Series
17
Long Press – is when you touch a sensor and keep your nger on it for more
than ½ a second. The light next to the sensor will dim to tell you that you have
reached the time frame of a long press and can remove your nger for actions
such as jumping pages
Hold – is when you keep your nger on the sensor
Cancel – hold your nger on the sensor for more than 2½ seconds and then
remove it to cancel an action

SD Cards and Internal Memory
The device has limited internal memory that is used to run the system and
applications on the device. Your les, folders, iRex Companion Software, and
settings are saved directly to the SD card. This has a big advantage to it; when
you remove the SD card, all your information stays securely with you and not
on the device.
Inserting the SD card
Insert the card into the card slot on the bottom of the device. Press the card in
with your nger until you hear or feel it ‘click’. If the card doesn’t want to slide
into the slot, it’s possible it is upside down. Flip the card over and try again.
Removing the SD card
To remove the card from the device, push the card into the device until you
hear or feel it ‘click. Pull back your nger and the card will eject from the slot.
You can now pull it free from the device.
User Manual - iRex Digital Reader 1000 Series
20
Important! Always ‘Safely Remove’ the SD Card
Never remove the SD card while the device or Companion Software is busy. If the
card is removed information on the card could be lost or corrupted.
You can Safely Remove the SD card from the device by selecting
Menu>Safely Remove from the bottom row. A message will be displayed when it is
safe to remove the card from the device.
Using the Device without a SD Card
The device will still work without a card inserted, but because the card holds
the content, there isn’t much to look at. The Home and Settings icons will still
appear on the screen, but the shortcuts will have disappeared. All the settings
will be removed from the device, but it will remember the language, lights,
and sound settings as well as leave you the option to format new cards for the
device. You can read about these in the section about Settings.
Copying the Contents of the SD Card to a New Card or Computer
If you wish to upgrade to another SD card or make a backup of the card on
your computer, you can use the included iRex Companion Software to copy
or move the contents of the card to another location. Please refer to the
iRex Companion Software information for more details about making backups.
Using Your Card on another Device
If you were to insert your SD card in another device, your own settings will be
used on the new device. You will also be able to browse your own content on the
device, but any documents that are DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected
will not open.

see the shortcuts from the new card appear.
If you delete, rename, or move the le/folder, the shortcut will no longer work

Help
Help is another one of the pre-made folders that came with your device and is
part of Documents. It contains User Manuals as well as Quick Reference Guides
in all the supported languages. You probably don’t need to use up space to
keep the same manual in all the different languages, so this is a good place to
practice deleting les.
Downloading Manuals
Updated manuals will be published with most software updates and will be
delivered to the Inbox or you can download them from the iRex website:

Dictionaries
2
In order for a dictionary to work on this device, it must be a Mobipocket
dictionary and it must be saved in the location System/Dictionaries on the
SD card. You can purchase a dictionary online or download a free sample from
www.mobipocket.com.
You will probably use the dictionaries the most when you are reading other
documents and need to look up a word. For this, you will use the Look Up
function found in the menu for your document.
You can also open a dictionary and look up words inside of it. You will be asked
to type in the word (or part of it) you are looking for and a result list will be
shown.
Look Up a Word inside a Dictionary
Open a Dictionary Ì
Choose Ì Menu>Find Word
Using the on-screen keyboard and stylus, type the word to nd Ì
Tap the Find button and wait; a list of words will be created Ì
Tap on the word in the list and the dictionary will show the page it is on Ì
Important: Mobipocket books, dictionaries, and reference materials that you have
purchased will only work on your own device; you cannot share them with others and
they will not work if you put your SD card in a different device.

WritePads
2
WritePads are pre-made, blank papers that you can write on. There are two
types of WritePads you can choose from; single sheets or pads of paper. Each
time you open an original WritePad, a blank copy is created for you to write on,
leaving the original in place to use again.
Using WritePads
When you open a WritePad, it will actually open up a copy for you to write on.
This way you will always have the blank original on hand to make another copy
from the next time. The WritePad automatically saves your notes on the SD
card and creates a le name, including a number (for example, Lines001.pdf).
Moving a WritePad to another place in the Documents
It’s possible to move the original WritePad templates to another folder in the
Documents. Just remember that when you open a new one, the copies will also
be placed in that folder as well.
Sharing Your Notes with Others
If you want to share your WritePads with others, you will need to use the
iRex Companion Software to merge the handwriting to the paper before
it can be shared. This is also true for any notes you have written on other
documents. Please see iRex Companion Software for more information about
merging a document.
Converting Handwriting to Digital Text
If you are interested in converting handwriting to digital text with your
computer, you can download and purchase additional software. You will nd a
link to the iRex Shop in the iRex Companion Software by clicking on Software
and choosing PC Software.

lists.

Changing Font Sizes
A few document formats allow you to change the size of the font instead of
zooming in on it. This changes the length of the document, which, on one hand,
makes it hard to have accurate bookmarks and thumbnails, but on the other
hand, the font is the right size for anyone’s eyes. It’s a trade off, but in the end,
readability always seems to win.
Change the size of the font by choosing Menu>Font Sizes from the Tools row
and then selecting your preferred font size.
