Operation, drawing D
HWAM WALL has an infinitely adjustable regulating rod. This should be pushed to the extreme
left (D1) – fully open – when lighting the stove. When the flames have got hold – after approx. 10
minutes – the rod should be pushed into the central position (D2) – half open (operating area).
When the stove is continuously in use, the regulating rod should be around the central position so
that the automatic system can ensure correct air supply. When adding fuel, the door is opened and the
fuel placed in the stove. The automatic system means that all that is necessary is to light the stove,
enjoy the heat and watch the fascinating play of the flames without thinking of regulating it. This also
saves fuel by optimising combustion.
Fuelling with wood
Push the regulating rod to the extreme left (D1). Open the door.
Place two HWAM WALL bio-kindling blocks at the bottom. Place split kindling, corresponding
to approx. two pieces of wood (no more than 2 kg) on top, then light. Keep the door ajar if
condensation appears on the glass. Close the door. When all the kindling has caught fire, push
the regulating rod into the middle position (D2) = operating area.
Lighting the fire causes a supply of air to flow through the holes in the insulated rear panel. Let the
kindling burn until there are no longer any visible flames.
Important! The ash pan must not be opened during the lighting phase and must always
be kept closed when the stove is in use.
Re-fuelling
More fuel can be added when no more yellow flames are visible and a good layer of red hot embers
are left. That is when the entire bottom of the stove is covered by embers and these light up in a
circle around the shaking grate.
Place two or three new logs, weighing approx. 0.7 kg each, in the stove.
It is not necessary to regulate the stove again. The automatic system will do this. But the temperature
can be regulated with the regulating rod. The further this is pushed to the right (D3) the lower the
rate of combustion and the longer the stove will burn. Pushing the rod to the left (D1) will cause
the temperature to increase and reduce the length of time the stove will burn. The highest output
is achieved with the regulating rod in the central position (D2). Wait until the layer of embers is low
enough before adding fuel.
Burning coal, briquettes and coke
HWAM WALL is not designed or constructed to use coal and coke as fuel, but briquettes can be
used by placing them in the wood embers. The regulating rod should be pushed to the extreme left
position until the wood begins to glow.
Remember that the regulating rod must then be pushed to the central position. Note that using fuel
other than wood can mean an increased risk of soot deposits on the glass.
Types of fuel
We recommend using birch or beech, especially when using the stove as an open fireplace, as these
types of wood do not produce sparks.
The wood should have been split and stored for at least a year, and preferably two years, outdoors
under a lean-to and taken indoors about a week before use. Wood stored indoors has a tendency
to become too dry and will burn too rapidly. Briquettes radiate a lot of heat and some types expand
considerably and burn extremely rapidly.
