Mounting of additional parts, illustration B
Before the stove is used, it must be ensured that all additional parts have been correctly fitted.
1. Smoke shelf. Should rest on the back plate and the angled side plates. It should slot into the groove
on the back plate.
2. Smoke channelling plate. Is secured by two tapered keys, each of which is pushed into its own
eyelet on the internal top plate.
3. Removable back plate, which conceals the automatics. This should always be fitted if the stove is
to stand against a combustible wall.
Connection to the chimney
HWAM Figaro is always supplied with top openings. It can be fitted to an approved steel chimney
above, or connected to a chimney with an elbow-bend pipe.
Illustration C shows a vertical cross-section of the flue.
1. Steel chimney.
2. Elbow-bend. Fits internally in the stove’s outlet connector.
3. Cemented chimney bearer.
4. Cemented sleeve. Fits the flue.
5. Wall rosette. Conceals the cement work around the sleeve.
6. Connection joint. Made tight with sealing string.
7. HWAM stove’s smoke channels.
8. Regulating draught control in the flue.
9. Cleaning hatch.
The chimney
The chimney is the stove’s motor and is all-important to the stove’s operation. The draught in the
chimney creates a partial vacuum in the stove. This partial vacuum removes smoke from the stove,
sucks air through the draught controller to what is called the “cleaner glass system”, keeping the
window free from soot, and sucks in air through the primary and secondary draught controllers for
combustion.
The chimney’s draught is created by the temperature difference between the inside and the outside
of the chimney. The higher the temperature is within the chimney, the better the draught will be.
It is therefore crucial that the chimney should be fully heated up before turning down the draught
control and limiting the combustion within the stove (a masonry chimney takes longer to heat up
than a steel chimney).
On days when wind and weather create a less efficient flow of air in the chimney, it is particularly
important to heat up the chimney as quickly as possible – to get the flames going within a short time.
Chop the wood into smaller segments; use an extra piece of wood for kindling the fire, etc.
After a longer period of inaction it is important to check for any blocks in the chimney. It is possible
to connect several wood burning stoves to the same chimney. However, you must check the current
regulations for such operations.
Even a good chimney can work poorly if not used correctly. Correspondingly, a poor chimney can
work well, if it is used correctly.
Chimney sweeping
In order to prevent risks of chimney fires, the chimney must be thoroughly swept once every year.
The smoke pipe and the smoke chamber above the smoke conductor plate must be cleaned at the
same time as the chimney. If the chimney’s height rules out cleaning the chimney from above, a clean-
