GENERATOR SAFETY
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
Honda generators are designed for use with electrical equipment that
has suitable power req
uirements. Other uses can result in injury to the
operator or damage to the generator and other property.
Most injuries or property damage can be prevented if you follow all
instructions in this manual a
nd on the generator. The most common
hazards are discussed below, along with the best way to protect
yourself and others.
Operator Responsibility
Know how to stop the generator quickly in case of emergency.
Understand the use of all generator controls, output receptacles,
and connection
s.
Be sure that anyone who operates the generator receives proper
instruction. Do not let
children operate the generator without
parental supervision.
Carbon Monoxide Hazards
A generator's exhaust contains toxic carbon monoxide, which you
can
not see or sme
ll. Breathing carbon monoxide can KILL YOU IN
MINUTES. To avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, follow these
instructions when operating a generator:
Only run a generator OUTSIDE, far away from windows, doors, and
vent
s.
Never operate a generator inside a house, garage, basement, crawl
space, or any enclosed or par
tially enclosed space.
Never operate a generator near open doors or windows.
Get fresh air and seek medical attention immediately if you suspect
you have inhale
d carbon monoxide.
Early symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure include headache,
fatigue, shortness of breath,
nausea, and dizziness. Continued
exposure to carbon monoxide can cause loss of muscular
coordination, loss of consciousness, and then death.
To alert you to potentially dangerous levels of carbon monoxide coming
from a generator operating outside, o
r from other sources, install battery
operated carbon monoxide alarms or plug-in carbon monoxide alarms
with battery back-up on every level of the home and outside sleeping
areas in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

GENERATOR SAFETY
Electric Shock Hazards
The generator produces enough electric power to cause a serious
shock or electrocution if misused.
Using a generator or electrical appliance in wet conditions, such as
rain or snow,
or near a pool or sprinkler system, or when your
hands are wet, could result in electrocution. Keep the generator dry.
If the generator is stored outdoors, unprotected from the weather,
check the Ground Fault Circuit Inter
rupter (GFCI) receptacle and all
other electrical components on the control panel before each use.
Moisture or ice can cause a malfunction or short circuit in electrical
components that could result in electrocution.
Do not connect to a buildings electrical system unless an isolation
switch has been
install
ed by a qualified electrician.
Fire and Burn Hazards
The exhaust system gets hot enough to ignite some materials.
Keep the generator at least 3 feet (1 meter) away from buildings
and other equipment during
operation.
Do not enclose the generator in any structure.
Keep flammable materials away from the generator.
The muffler becomes very hot during operation and remains hot for
a while after sto
pping the engine. Be careful not to touch the muffler
while it is hot. Let the engine cool before storing the generator
indoors.

GENERATOR SAFETY
Refuel With Care
Gasoline is extremely flammable, and gasoline vapor can explode.
Do not refuel during operation.
Allow the engine to cool if it has been in operation.
Refuel only outdoors in a well-ventilated area and on a level surface.
Never smoke near gasoline, and keep other flames and sparks away.
Do not overfill the fuel tank.
Make sure that any spilled fuel has been wiped up before starting the
engine.
Alw

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) Receptacle
Each 120 V 20 A duplex receptacle is protected by a Ground Fault
Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) for protection against the shock hazard of
ground-fault currents.
An example of ground-fault current is the current that would flow
through a per
son who is using an appliance with faulty insulation and,
at the same time, is in contact with an electrical ground such as a
plumbing fixture, wet floor, or earth. The GFCI will protect against
current flowing through that person.
The GFCI will not protect against short circuit or overloads.
GFCIs can be expected to interrupt power supply if there are ground
faults
or stray cur
rent imposed on the wiring by other electrical
devices, wiring, or equipment. Due to the risk of a power interruption,
this generator is not recommended for powering medical or life
support equipment.

BEFORE OPERATION
ARE YOU READY TO GET STARTED?
Your safety is your responsibility.
A little time spent in preparation will
significantly reduce your risk of injury.
Knowledge
Read and understand this manual. Know what the controls do and
how to
operate them.
F
amiliarize yourself with the generator and its operation before you
begin
using it. Know h
ow to quickly shut off the generator in case of
an emergency.
If the generator is being used to power appliances, be sure that they
do not exc
eed the generators load rating (see page 31).
IS YOUR GENERATOR READY TO GO?
For your safety, to ensure compliance with environmental regulations,
and to
maximize
the service life of your equipment, it is very
important to take a few moments before you operate the generator to
check its condition. Be sure to take care of any problem you find, or
have your servicing dealer correct it, before you operate the
generator.
Failure to properly maintain this
generator, or failing to correct a
problem before operation, could
result in a significant malfunction.
Some malfunctions can seriously
hurt or kill you
.
Always perform a pre-operation
inspection before each operation
and cor
rect any problems.

BEFORE OPERATION
To prevent a possible fire, keep the generator at least 3 feet (1 meter)
away from building walls and other equipment during operation. Do
not place flammable objects close to the engine.
Before beginning your pre-operation checks, be sure the generator is
on a level surface and the en
gine switch is in the OFF position.
Check the Engine
Before each use, look around and underneath the engine for signs
of oil or gasoline leaks.
C
heck the oil level (see page 42). A low oil level will cause the Oil
Alert system to shut down the engine or prevent it from starting.
Check the air cleaner (see page 45). A dirty air cleaner element will
restrict air flow to the carburetor, reducing engine and generator
p
erformance.
Check the fuel level (see page 40). Starting with a full tank will help
to eliminate or reduce operating interruptions for refueling.
Check the GFCI
Check the GFCI operation (see page 27) after starting the engine.

OPERATION
SAFE OPERATING PRECAUTIONS
Before operating the generator for the firs
t time, review chapters
GENERATOR SAFETY
(see page 6) and
BEFORE OPERATION
(see
page 20).
For your safety, do not operate the generator in an enclosed area such
as
a garage. Y
our generators exhaust contains poisonous carbon
monoxide gas that can collect rapidly in an enclosed area and cause
illness or death.
Before connecting an AC appliance or power cord to the generator:
Use grounded 3-prong extension cords, tools, and appliances, or
double-insulated tools
and appliances.
Inspect cords and plugs, and replace if damaged.
Do not use cord lengths greater than 164 feet (50 meters), and do
n
ot u
se multiple tools and appliances with built-in noise filters. Such
use may activate the GFCI.
Make sure that the appliance is in good working order. Faulty
a
ppliances or power cord
s can create a potential for electric shock.
Make sure the electrical rating of the tool or appliance does not
exc
eed the rated power of the generator or the receptacle being used.
Operate the generator at least 3 feet (1 meter) away from buildings
a
nd other equipment.
Do not operate the generator in an enclosed structure.
Do not place flammable objects close to the engine or locate the
g
enerator nea
r flammable materials.
Exhaust contains poisonous carbon

OPERATION
AC OPERATION
If an appliance begins to operate abnormally, becomes sluggish, or
stops suddenly, turn it off immediately. Disconnect the appliance, and
determine whether the problem is in the appliance or the rated load
capacity of the generator has been exceeded.
Substantial overloading may damage the generator. Marginal
overloading may shorten the service life of the generator.
1. Turn the voltage selector switch to either position.
With the voltage selector switch in the ‘‘120V/240V’’ position, you
can use the 1
20V and 120V/240V receptacles simultaneously. If you
are NOT using 240 volts, then select the ‘‘120V ONLY’’ position.
Disconnect or turn OFF all appliances or tools connected to the
generator before changing the voltage selector switch position.
The generator may be damaged if the switch position is changed with
loads connected and operating.
2. Start the engine (see page 23).

OPERATION
AC Applications
Before connecting an appliance or power cord to the generator:
Make sure that it is in good working order. A faulty appliance or
power cord can create a
potential for electrical shock.
If an appliance begins to operate abnormally, becomes sluggish, or
stops suddenly, turn it off immedia
tely. Disconnect the appliance,
and determine whether the problem is the appliance or the rated
load capacity of the generator has been exceeded.
Most appliance motors require more than their rated wattage for
startup.
Mak
e sure the electrical rating of the tool or appliance does not
exceed
the maximum power rating of the generator.
Maximum power is:
EG4000CL: 4.0 kVA
EG5000CL: 5.0 kVA
EG6500CL: 6.5 kVA
For continuous operation, do not exceed the rated power.
Rated power is:
EG4000CL: 3.6 kVA
EG5000CL: 4.5 kVA
EG6500CL: 5.5 kVA
In either case, the total power requirements (V
A) of all appliances
conn
ected must be considered. Appliance and power tool
manufacturers usually list rating information near the model number
or serial number.
Substantial overloading will open the AC circuit breaker. Slightly
overloading the generator may not switch the AC circuit breaker OFF,
but will shorten the service life of the generator.

STANDBY POWER
Connections to a Building’s Electrical System
Connections for standby power to a building’s electrical system must
be made by a qualified
electrician. The connection must isolate the
generator power from utility power, and must comply with all
applicable laws and electrical codes.
In some areas, generators are required by law to be registered with
local utility companies. Check local regulations for proper regi
stration
and use procedures.
System Ground
This generator has a system ground that connects generator frame
comp
onents to ground term
inals in the AC output receptacles. The
system ground is not connected to the AC neutral wire.
Improper connections to a building’s
electrical system can allow current
from the generator to backfeed into
the utility lines.
Such backfeed may electrocute
utility company worker
s or others
who contact the lines during a
power outage, and the generator
may explode, burn, or cause fires
when utility power is restored.
Consult the utility company or a
qualifie
d electrician
prior to making
any power connections.

STORAGE
STORAGE PREPARATION
Proper storage preparation is essential for keeping your generator
trouble-free and looking good. The fo
llowing steps will help to keep
rust and corrosion from impairing your generators function and
appearance, and will make the engine easier to start when you use the
generator again.
Cleaning
Wipe the generator with a moist cloth. After the generator has dried,
touch up any da
maged paint, and coat other areas that may rust with
a light film of oil.
Fuel
Depending on the region where you operate your equipment, fuel
formulations may deteriorate and oxidize rapidly. Fuel deterioration
and oxidation can occur in as little as 30 days and may cause damage
to the carburetor and/or fuel system. Please check with your servicing
dealer for local storage recommendations.
Gasoline will oxidize and deteriorate in storage. Old gasoline will
cause hard starting, and it leaves gum deposits that clog the fuel
system. If the gasoline in your generator deteriorates during storage,
you may need to have the carburetor and other fuel system
components serviced or replaced.
The length of time that gasoline can be left in your fuel tank and
carbureto
r without causi
ng functional problems will vary with such
factors as gasoline blend, your storage temperatures, and whether the
fuel tank is partially or completely filled. The air in a partially filled fuel
tank promotes fuel deterioration. Very warm storage temperatures
accelerate fuel deterioration. Fuel deterioration problems may occur
within a few months, or even less if the gasoline was not fresh when
you filled the fuel tank.
The
Distributors Limited Warranty
does not cover fuel system
damage or engine performance problems resulting from neglected
storage preparation.
You can extend fuel storage life by adding a gasoline stabilizer that is
formulated for that purpose, or you can a
void fuel deterioration
problems by draining the carburetor, sediment cup, and/or fuel tank.

Draining the Fuel Tank and Carburetor
1. Place a suitable gasoline container below the carburetor.
2. Turn the fuel valve lever to the OFF position, loosen the carburetor
drain bolt by turning 1
to 2 turns counterclockwise, and drain the
fuel from the carburetor.
Gasoline is highly flammable and
explosive.
You can be burned or seriously
injured when handling fuel
.
Stop the engine and keep heat,
sparks, and flame aw
ay when
refueling.

STORAGE
3. Remove the sediment cup (see page 51), and then turn the fuel
valve lever to the ON position and drain the fuel from the fuel tank.
4. After all the fuel has drained into the container, tighten the
carbureto
r d
rain bolt securely.
5. Install the sediment cup and a new O-ring.
6. Turn the fuel valve lever to the OFF position.
Engine Oil
Change the engine oil (see page 43).
Engine Cylinder
1. Remove the spark plug, and pour a teaspoon (5 cc) of clean engine
oil into th
e cylinder. Crank the engine several revolutions to
distribute the oil, then reinstall the spark plug.
2. Slowly pull the starter grip until resistance is felt. At this point, the
piston is coming up on its com
pression stroke, and both the intake
and exhaust valves are closed. Storing the engine in this position
will help to protect it from internal corrosion.

STORAGE
STORAGE PRECAUTIONS
If your generator will be stored with gasoline in the fuel tank and
carburetor,
it is important to reduce the hazard of gasoline vapor
ignition.
Select a well ventilated storage area away from any appliance that
operates with a flame, such as a furnace, w
ater heater, or clothes
dryer. Also avoid any area with a spark-producing electric motor, or
where power tools are operated.
If possible, avoid storage areas with high humidity, because that
promotes rust and corr
osion.
Unless all fuel has been drained from the fuel tank, leave the engine
switch in the OFF
position, and the fuel valve lever in the OFF position
(see page 26) to reduce the possibility of leakage.
Place the generator on a level surface. Tilting or laying it on its side
can cause fuel or oil leak
age.
With the engine and exhaust system cool, cover the generator to keep
out dust. A hot en
gine and e
xhaust system can ignite or melt some
materials.
Do not use sheet plastic as a dust cover. A nonporous co
ver will trap
moisture around the generator, promoting rust and corrosion.
REMOVAL FROM STORAGE
Check your generator as described in the
BEFORE OPERATION
chapter of this manual (see page 20).
If the generator was stored for 1 year or longer, drain the fuel tank (see
page 55) and refuel with fresh gasoline. If you keep a container of
gasoline for refueling, be sure that it contains only fresh gasoline.
Gasoline ox
idizes and deteriorates over time, causing hard starting.
If the cylinder was coated with oil during storage preparation, the
engine may smoke briefly
at startup. This is normal.
31Z306100.book 56 ページ 2014年12月5日 金曜日 午後5時40分
57
TRANSPORTING
Do not lay the generator on its side when moving, storing, or
operating it. Oil or fuel may leak and damage the engine or your
property.
If the generator has been running, allow the engine to cool for at least
15 minutes before loading the generator on the transport vehicle. A
hot engine and exhaust system can burn you and can ignite some
materials.
Keep the generator level when transporting to reduce the possibility
of fuel leakage. M
ove the fuel valve lever to the OFF position.
When using ropes or tie-down straps to secure the generator for
transportation, b
e sure to only use the frame bars as attachment
points. Do not fasten ropes or straps to any portions of the generator
body.

Carburetor Modification for High Altitude Operation
At high altitude, the standard carburetor air-fuel mixture will be too
rich. Performance will decrease, and fu
el consumption will increase. A
very rich mixture will also foul the spark plug and cause hard starting.
Operation at an altitude that differs from that at which this engine was
certified, for extended periods of time, may increase emissions.
High altitude performance can be improved by specific modifications
to the carburetor
. If you alw
ays operate your generator at altitudes
above 5,000 feet (1,500 meters), have your authorized Honda servicing
dealer perform this carburetor modification. This engine, when
operated at high altitude with the carburetor modifications for high
altitude use, will meet each emission standard throughout its useful
life.
Even with carburetor modification, engine horsepower will decrease
about 3.5% for each 1,
000-foot (300-meter) increase in altitude. The
effect of altitude on horsepower will be greater than this if no
carburetor modification is made.
When the carburetor has been modified for high altitude operation,
the air/fuel mixture will be too lean for low altitude use. Operation at
altitudes below 5,000 feet (1,500 meters) with a modified carburetor
may cause the engine to overheat and result in serious engine
damage. For use at low altitudes, have your servicing dealer return
the carburetor to original factory specifications.

TECHNICAL & CONSUMER INFORMATION
Emission Control System Information
Source of Emissions
The combustion process produces carbon monoxide, oxides of
nitrogen, and hydroca
rbons. Control of hydrocarbons and oxides of
nitrogen is very important because, under certain conditions, they
react to form photochemical smog when subjected to sunlight.
Carbon monoxide does not react in the same way, but it is toxic.
Honda utilizes appropriate air/fuel ratios and other emissions control
systems to reduce the emissions of
carbon monoxide, oxides of
nitrogen, and hydrocarbons.
Additionally, Honda fuel systems utilize components and control
technologies to reduce evaporative em
issions.
The U.S. and California Clean Air Acts
EPA and California regulations require all manufacturers to furnish
written instructions
describing the operation and maintenance of
emission control systems.
The following instructions and procedures must be followed in order
to k
eep the Ho
nda engine emissions within the emission standards.
Tampering and Altering
Tampering is a violation of Federal and California law.
Tampering with or altering the emission control system may increase
emissions beyond the legal limit. Among those acts that constitute
tampering are:
Removal or alteration of any part of intake, fuel, or exhaust systems.
Altering or defeating the governor linkage or speed-adjusting
mechanism to
cause the engine to operate outside its design
parameters.

TECHNICAL & CONSUMER INFORMATION
Problems That May Affect Emissions
If you are aware of any of the following symptoms, have your engine
inspected and repai
red by your authorized Honda servicing dealer.
Hard starting or stalling after starting.
Rough idle.
Misfiring or backfiring under load.
Afterburning (backfiring).
Black exhaust smoke or high fuel consumption.
Replacement Parts
The emission control systems on your new Honda engine were
designed, bu
ilt, and cert
ified to conform with applicable emission
regulations. We recommend the use of Honda Genuine parts
whenever you have maintenance done. These original-design
replacement parts are manufactured to the same standards as the
original parts, so you can be confident of their performance. The use
of replacement parts that are not of the original design and quality
may impair the effectiveness of your emission control system.
A manufacturer of an aftermarket part assumes the responsibility that
the par
t will n
ot adver
sely affect emission performance. The
manufacturer or rebuilder of the part must certify that use of the part
will not result in a failure of the engine to comply with emission
regulations.
Maintenance
Follow the
MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE
on page 39. Remember that this
schedule is based on the assumption that your machine will be used
for its
designed purpose. Sustained high-load or high-temperature
operation, or use in dusty conditions, will require more frequent
service.

FUEL
Add fuel to the generator in a well-ventilated area. Never refuel the
engine inside a buil
ding where gasoline fumes may reach flames or
sparks. Keep gasoline away from appliance pilot lights, barbecues,
electric appliances, power tools, etc. Spilled fuel is not only a fire
hazard, it causes environmental damage. Wipe up spills immediately.
This engine is certified to operate on unleaded gasoline with a pump
octane rating of 86
or higher. Refer to page 41 for additional fuel
recommendations.
1. Remove the fuel tank cap.
2. Fuel carefully to avoid spilling fuel. Do not fill the fuel tank above
the upper level ma
rk (red) on the fuel filter.
3. After refueling, reinstall the fuel tank cap securely.
Gasoline is highly flammable and
explosive.
You can be burned or seriously
injured when handling fuel
.
Stop the engine and keep heat,
