4.2. Connecting and disconnecting your DeeJay Trim 4&6
Your DeeJay Trim 4&6 can be used in conjunction with another sound card, whether internal or
external, without creating conflicts on your computer.
Please note that for the Windows operating system, when your DeeJay Trim 4&6 is
connected, it will automatically be recognized as the main sound card. The previous default
sound card will return when the DeeJay Trim 4&6 is disconnected.
Therefore, once properly installed, you can connect and disconnect your DeeJay Trim 4&6 audio
interface at any time, even when your computer is powered on, thanks to its USB hot-plug
function (although you should never do so when DeeJay Trim 4&6 is playing or recording music,
or else the application will terminate and display an error message).
DeeJay Trim 4&6 features a "hook" at the back of the unit, which can be used to make
a loop in the USB cord attaching the device to your computer. This is a security measure and
helps to avoid the USB cable being accidentally unplugged when you are using the device,
which is very helpful if you are DJing at a party, for example, and don't want to risk your music
being cut off right in the middle of your set!

4.3. Power consumption and USB hub
DeeJay Trim 4&6 includes a power adapter, which should always be connected when you are
using the device in order to ensure sufficient power to the unit and optimal performance under all
mixing conditions.
Your DeeJay Trim 4&6 features a 3 port USB hub, capable of supporting multiple high-speed
devices.
ENGLISH
Nevertheless, should you notice any performance issues when multiple high-speed devices are
connected to the unit, try disconnecting the devices one by one to see whether one of them in
particular is taking up a very large amount of bandwidth. Some webcams, for example, are
particularly taxing in terms of bandwidth, and could potentially result in problems with
performance (i.e. crackling or pops in your audio).
FRANÇAIS
If you identify a particular device which is causing problems in terms of performance, disconnect
the device from your DeeJay Trim 4&6. You can try connecting the device in question to a USB
port directly on your computer and see if that resolves the issue.
Should you experience any problems with your included power adapter, you can
contact Hercules technical support (http://ts.hercules.com) in order to find out the procedure to
follow to either repair or replace your power adapter.
DEUTSCH
If you wish to purchase a new power adapter on your own, or if you live in a country where you
are unable to use the included power adapter, be sure to purchase an adapter with identical
specifications and polarity indications as those listed below:
NEDERLANDS
ITALIANO
Be sure to only ever purchase or use a replacement power adapter with identical
specifications (9-16 Volt, 1.5 Amp) and polarity indications (see image above) as the power
adapter included with your DeeJay Trim 4&6.
Failure to use a power adapter with identical specifications could result in damage to your
DeeJay Trim 4&6 unit.

5.2. Key features
Back face:
- RCA outputs: these outputs can be used to connect standard speakers or a mixing console to
the DeeJay Trim 4&6. Channels 1-2 are the main output channels for your mix.
- 1/4" jack outputs 1-2: these outputs can be used to connect professional-level gear or a PA
system to the DeeJay Trim 4&6. Channels 1-2 are the main output channels for your mix.
ENGLISH
- Line/phono switches: use these switches to select the input level for the corresponding
inputs. Select phono level when using a phono level turntable.
- Phono grounding screws: use these screws to attach the ground wire from your turntable, to
eliminate buzz and humming interference on the corresponding input.
FRANÇAIS

DEUTSCH
Front face:
- Microphone volume control knob: use this knob to control the level of your microphone.
- Mic On-Off button: press this button to turn the microphone on or off (mic is enabled when the
LED is on). When the mic is on, a talk-over attenuation feature automatically lowers the level
of the music playing, so that you can be heard more easily when speaking to the audience.
Please see chapter 6.3.2 Main tab
for more information on selecting the attenuation level.
NEDERLANDS
- VU-meter switch: use this switch to select whether the input levels (switch is up) or output
levels (switch is down) are being displayed on the corresponding VU-meters.
- 4-channel VU-meter: this VU-meter allows you to visually monitor the levels of the
corresponding inputs or outputs. This is very handy to make sure that the levels are neither
too high (which could result in distortion) or too low.
ITALIANO
- Preamplification “trim” control knobs: use these knobs to adjust the preamplification “trim”
level on the corresponding inputs, i.e. the degree to which the levels of the corresponding
inputs are amplified before they are processed by your DeeJay Trim 4&6.
ESPAÑOL
- Headphone volume control knob: use this knob to control the level of your headphones
connected to the headphone connector.
- Headphone output switch: use this switch to select whether channels 1-2 (switch is up) or 3-
4 (switch is down = headphones connected to output channels 3-4, which is the default setting)
are being played over your headphones. This is very useful when mixing two audio sources,
allowing you to preview your next track on your headphones while the current song is playing
for your audience.
5.3. Connector types
Two types of connectors are available for connecting speakers or other audio gear: RCA and 1/4"
jack (6.35mm). All connectors provide mono outputs, each of which corresponds to a single
channel (left and right). The RCA connectors are generally used for connecting standard
speakers or a mixing console, whereas the 1/4" jack (6.35mm) connectors are used to connect
professional-level gear or a PA system to the DeeJay Trim 4&6.
Select the type of connector according to the equipment you will be connecting. Outputs 1-2 are
normally used to play your mix live for your audience, while outputs 3-4 are generally used for
monitoring (or used with output 1-2 to connect an external analog mixer).
5.4. Connecting headphones
Your DeeJay Trim 4&6 features a headphone connector for use with DJ headphones (stereo, 16-
64 ohms impedance), and a headphone volume control knob, which lets you adjust the output
level on your headphones.
5.5. Connecting a microphone
Your DeeJay Trim 4&6 features one microphone connector. You can address the audience by
talking on your microphone over the music (by mixing the microphone input with audio outputs 1-
2, for example), or use your microphone to substitute your voice for the music being played on
channels 1-2.
Press the Mic On-Off button on the front of the DeeJay Trim 4&6 to switch your microphone on or
off. You can use the microphone volume knob (just to the left of the button) to adjust your
microphone's input level.
12/24
13/24
DeeJay Trim 4&6 features a talk-over (attenuation) function for the microphone input, which
automatically lowers the volume of the music being played when your microphone is on, so that
the crowd can hear you when you are talking. The volume of the music is restored when the
microphone input is disabled.
Please refer to chapter 6.3.2 Main tab
for more information on adjusting the talk-over function and
using your microphone.

- Select Device: selects which device's control panel is currently active (if multiple Hercules DJ
devices are connected, as this icon gathers together all of the Hercules DJ products you have
installed on your system).
ESPAÑOL
- Hardware Information: this is useful when contacting technical support, for example.
- Check for updates: please note that in order to check for updates, you must have an active
Internet connection.

If a new version is available, it is downloaded and installation is launched automatically.
Follow the on-screen instructions to install the latest update as described in the Installation
section of this manual.
6.2. Accessing the control panel (Mac)
To launch the control panel on Mac, double-click the DeeJay Trim 4&6 icon on your desktop.
6.3. Using the DeeJay Trim 4&6 control panel
The control panel allows you to manage the different settings for your DeeJay Trim 4&6.
PC Mac
6.3.1. General settings
- Output channels: Three pairs of software faders (1-2, 3-4, 5-6) function as the main volume
controls for the corresponding outputs. You can adjust the balance (left/right) by using the
balance faders located above each pair of faders for the output channels. Click the link icon
underneath the faders to disable/enable them moving in tandem. You can also mute the sound
on outputs by clicking the volume icon below the link icon. The faders for channels 5-6 are only
accessible in 2 in/6 out mode.
- Input channels: You can select either the microphone, or the Line in/phono input for input
channels 1-2.
Please note that this setting doesn’t affect the Talk-over function for the microphone, as
your voice is mixed at a hardware level. However, if you are planning to record the
microphone, the microphone must be selected as your source.
- USB 2 Hub: the indication ON appears when the external power supply is connected to your
DeeJay Trim 4&6.
- Audio Mode (Windows only): you can select WDM or ASIO audio modes. You can only change
modes when playback is stopped.
14/24
15/24
6.3.2. Main tab
- Audio configuration: you can select the audio configuration you wish to use (4 inputs/4 outputs
or 2 inputs/6 outputs
). In each mode, the disabled inputs or outputs are grayed out (outputs 5-6
in 4 in/4 out mode, and inputs 3-4 in 2 in/6 out mode).
In many cases, 4 inputs/4 outputs mode will be perfect for all of your mixing needs: for example,
you can connect one external audio source to inputs 1-2, and another audio source to inputs 3-
4; while outputs 1-2 are normally used to play your mix live for your audience, and outputs 3-4
are generally used for monitoring (or used with output 1-2 to connect an external analog mixer).
ENGLISH
However, you may also choose to use 2 inputs/6 outputs mode, which allows you to export a
computer mix to a 6-channel analog mixer, for example. This can be very handy in giving you
more mixing flexibility by providing extra outputs, but the trade-off is that in doing so, you lose
the use of inputs 3-4.
FRANÇAIS
When you switch from one audio configuration to another (4 inputs/4 outputs to 2 inputs/6
outputs, or the reverse; although not in ASIO mode in Windows), the system detects DeeJay
Trim 4&6 as if you had disconnected it and then reconnected it to your computer.
Each change in audio configuration in WDM mode disables your DeeJay Trim 4&6 audio
interface for approximately 10 seconds, and you are alerted by the following message:
DEUTSCH
PC Mac
NEDERLANDS
While the audio mode is changing, the control panel appears grayed out and inaccessible:
ITALIANO
ESPAÑOL
Once the audio mode has changed, your control panel is accessible once again:
- In this tab, the channels sent to your headphone output are displayed: output 1-2, or output 3-
4. You select the channels using the headphone switch on the DeeJay Trim 4&6's front face.
- You can also disable/enable or adjust the talk-over attenuation level, that is to say, the level of
reduction of the music when you press the Mic On-Off button on your DeeJay Trim 4&6's front
face to enable and let you talk into the microphone (-6 dB by default: -3 dB provides the loudest
background music level, and -9 dB the lowest background music level).
6.3.3. Audio settings: Windows (ASIO tab)
"Audio Stream Input/Output" is a multiplatform, multi-channel audio transfer protocol developed
by the Steinberg company. It allows different programs to communicate with different sound
cards and recognize all of the available inputs and outputs on the sound card. The user can
16/24
17/24
then assign these input and output ports for recording or playback when using ASIO-compatible
software applications.
When switching to ASIO mode, you can adjust the following settings: Sample rate, Sample size
and ASIO buffer size.
Any modifications to the ASIO settings must be performed before launching the

application you wish to use.
The default configuration is 44100Hz (44.1kHz) in 16-bit mode. Most DJ mixing software
operates in 44.1kHz/16-bit mode, which makes sense as this is the resolution of audio CDs, and
most digital audio tracks come from audio CDs.
For more information, please see chapter 6.3.7 Advanced audio settings
.
6.3.4. Audio settings: Mac
On Mac, the audio settings are not modified in the control panel, but rather within the music or
DJing application you are using itself.
For more information, please see chapter 6.3.7 Advanced audio settings
.
6.3.5. Advanced tab
- This tab lets you select the hardware mix options for outputs 1-2 (your main outputs): USB
streaming 1-2 (Default), USB streaming 1-2 + Microphone, or USB streaming 1-2 + Line In
1-2.
USB streaming takes whatever audio is playing on your computer's sound card and sends it to
outputs 1-2. Adding either the microphone input or Line In 1-2 input mixes the corresponding
input in with the USB streaming audio on outputs 1-2.
Please note that in order to change audio modes on PC (from 4 inputs/4 outputs to 2
inputs/6 outputs, or the reverse), no audio must currently be streaming.
6.3.6. About tab
- This tab provides all of the information on the versions of the package, firmware, driver, DJ API
and control panel you are using. Please refer to this information when contacting technical
support. The contents of this tab are only visible when DeeJay Trim 4&6 is connected to your
computer.
6.3.7. Advanced audio settings
- Sample rate represents the number of times that your audio is sampled per second. Switching
to a higher sample rate (48000Hz) can be beneficial when recording, as this can provide higher
quality recordings.
- Sample size also affects the quality of your recordings, with a higher sample size providing
higher quality recordings.
- ASIO buffer size: increasing the ASIO buffer size will put less stress on your system, and should
also be effective in eliminating any problems (i.e. clicks and pops) you may hear in your audio.
If you notice any issues in terms of audio quality, you can experiment with increasing the ASIO
buffer size and see if that helps to resolve the problem.
- DeeJay Trim 4&6 is ASIO 2.0-compatible, allowing you to use ASIO 2.0 VST plug-ins and add
amazing effects to your music.
18/24
19/24
7. F.A.Q.
1) My computer has a built-in sound card, so why would I need a
DJ sound card?
Computers generally only provide stereo playback, allowing you to play your mix on the stereo
output, but without a DJ sound card you lack a second stereo output and a solid preamplifier to
preview your mixes on your headphones.
ENGLISH
2) Why is a DJ audio interface better than a standard good audio
interface?
A standard audio interface, if not made for DJing, lacks:
FRANÇAIS
the talk-over function: mixing the microphone input over the background music
(allowing you to “talk over” the music),
the phono input level: phono pre-amplifiers allow you to connect turntables with a
phono output level (i.e. a lower output level than the line output level),
a pre-amplified headphone output for headphones on channels 3-4, for previewing
tracks on different channels than your main music output (which is generally outputs 1-
2) you use to play the mix.
DEUTSCH
3) Why are there analog pre-amplifiers on the inputs instead of
software gain?
NEDERLANDS
Analog pre-amplifiers trim or increase the input signal before its digitization, with 2 benefits:
- Gain: if the input signal is too weak, the analog to digital converter can’t use its full
resolution (in 16-bit, a weak signal may be coded on only 8 or 10 bits of the possible
16-bit resolution, and the software gain comes after the conversion, too late to restore
the resolution: a low-level source will lack brilliance). With its analog preamplifier,
Hercules lets you optimize the input level before the analog-to-digital conversion and
record the source at full-scale resolution, which no software gain can accomplish.
ITALIANO
- Attenuation: if the level of an input source saturates the input, the analog-to-digital
converter on the input will crash, and no software setting can save the signal quality
afterwards. Hercules’ analog preamplifiers let you trim the input signal before its digital
conversion, to avoid saturation and get the best audio quality.
ESPAÑOL
4) Why is a high-speed USB hub built into the DeeJay Trim 4&6?
A high-speed USB hub is built into the DeeJay Trim 4&6 in order to provide two benefits:
a) DJs need a hub to mix with their DJ control surface: DeeJay Trim 4&6 is built for use with a
control surface, and connecting both devices (USB audio interface + USB control surface)
requires 2 USB ports, so laptops with only 2 USB ports would then lack USB ports to connect
hard disks, USB keys or a USB mouse. By including the USB hub, Hercules has equipped the
audio interface with a necessary element.
b) The powered high-speed USB hub protects the music from power fluctuations in USB
bus power: as Windows XP and Vista by default authorize Windows to cut the power on the USB
bus to save energy, DJs may experience changes in the audio output level caused by such power
fluctuations on the USB bus. Powering the high-speed USB hub separately secures the audio
output level with any configuration, and prevents compatibility issues on some laptops whose
USB ports’ voltage is too low.
5) What makes DeeJay Trim 4&6 different than the DJ Console
Rmx’s integrated audio?
a) DeeJay Trim 4&6 is more versatile, featuring:
- 2 audio modes: 2 in/6 out audio mode in addition to the 4 in/4 out mode
DeeJay Trim 4&6 has a 2 in/6 out mode in addition to the standard 4 in/4 out mode, allowing you
to export a computer mix to a 6-channel analog mixer.
- A built-in high speed USB hub
The USB 2.0 hub supports the connection of 3 additional USB devices, including USB control
surfaces (such as DJ Control Steel or other MIDI controllers), or external USB storage devices
(hard drives, USB keys).
- An included external power supply
The external power supply protects the audio level from fluctuations of the computer’s USB bus.
b) DeeJay Trim 4&6 is more powerful, with preamplifiers on the audio inputs:
DeeJay Trim 4&6 has preamplifiers to set gain and attenuation on the 4 input channels, to
support:
- high-level output sources, such as Pioneer CDJ players; and
- low-level output sources, such as phono level turntables with a low level cartridge.
On DeeJay Trim 4&6, you just turn the preamplifier knobs to adjust the gain level.
c) DeeJay Trim 4&6 offers more precise audio adjustment, with VU-meters on the audio
inputs or outputs:
The VU-meters allow the DJ to easily visually verify the audio level of each stereo source, for
example, and instantly see if an input is misconnected.
6) What is the audio codec used in Hercules DeeJay Trim 4&6?
DeeJay Trim 4&6 integrates:
