General Safety Warnings
Safety instructions
WARNING Read and understand all instructions. Failure to follow
all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/
or serious injury. The term “power tool” in all of the warnings below
refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool, garden power tool,
battery-operated (cordless) power tool or your petrol operated garden
tool.
Save these instructions
Work area
Ensure the area to be mowed is clear and free of debris, rocks,
gravel, garden furniture etc.
Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered and dark areas invite
accidents.
Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in
the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools
create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
Ensure all animals, children and bystanders are at least 15m away
while operating this lawn mower. Distractions can cause you to
lose control.
Personal safety
Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when
operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired
or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication. A moment
of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious
personal injury.
Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. Safety
equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat,
or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce
7
MODEL No.: SLM462, PRODUCT No.: 63158
personal injuries.
Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the tool on.
A wrench or a key that is left attached to a rotating part of the
power tool may result in personal injury.
Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times.
This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected
situations.
Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your
hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes,
jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and
collection facilities ensure that these are connected and properly
used. Use of these devices can reduce dust-related hazards.
Power tool use and care
Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your
application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer
at the rate for which it was designed.
Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and
off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is
dangerous and must be repaired.
Turn tool off completely before making any adjustments, changing
accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures
reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
When not in use, store power tools out of the reach of children
and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these
instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in
the hands of untrained users.
Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving
parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the
power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired
before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power
tools.
Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting
tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier
8
MODEL No.: SLM462, PRODUCT No.: 63158
to control.
Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc., in accordance with
these instructions and in the manner intended for the particular
type of power tool, taking into account the working conditions and

NOTE: In case of an emergency, release the start bar (2) immediately to

Clear a flooded engine
If the engine won’t start after starting several times, the engine may be
flooded with excess fuel. Use the following procedure to clear and start
a flooded engine.
1) Release the start bar (2) to stop the engine.
2) Remove the spark plug, clean and dry it, and then reinstall it.
Emergency stopping
If you have released the start bar (2) and the lawn mower fails to stop,
do not panic - there are two other safe stopping methods available
for you to try. Do not put fingers or hands anywhere near the cutting
deck.
The safest method is to wheel the lawn mower to a safe area and allow
the lawn mower to continue to run until the fuel has been all used up.
An alternative to this where the user is confident, is to remove the
spark plug cap by pulling it from the spark plug (27) . This removes the
engines ability to fire and run.
However it is recommended to wear a rubber glove when grasping the
spark plug cap as a small electric shock is possible when pulling the cap
off.
Ensure you feel confident to do this. If not, simply allow the lawn
mower to run out of fuel.
CAUTION: The spark plug may be hot.
Persons with heart conditions or any medical condition which can be
affected by electric shock should not attempt this method.
Do not attempt to restart the lawn mower and contact your local
service agent and book a repair of the product.
Do not lift the lawn mower. Do not tilt the lawn mower.
Do not leave the running lawn mower unattended.
Do not put hands under the running lawn mower under any
circumstances.

Always observe the strictest safety procedures when using
the lawn mower.
Carefully read the safety instructions of this manual before
using the lawn mower.
Keep a firm grip on the upper handle (4) and walk, never run with the
lawn mower, be very careful when mowing uneven or rough ground.
Mow across slopes, never up and down. Be careful when changing the
direction of the mower on a slope. Do not use the mower on a steep
slope of more than 20°.
The best results will be achieved if the grass is dry.
Wet grass will tend to clog the blade and the catcher (17). Grass grows
at different rates at different times of the year.
Never use the lowest cutting height for the first cut of the season or in
drought conditions. Only about one third of the grass height should be
cut.
If the lawn mower will not collect the cuttings efficiently, the grass
discharge chute may be blocked. The grass catcher may be full, or the
underside of the mower deck may be clogged.
Mowing advice
1) Before mowing always check and clear the grassed area for all
foreign objects, especially solid ones semi concealed in the ground
such as rocks, stumps and garden stakes.
2) Sharp blades cut cleanly and efficiently, if the blades are dull it will
tear the grass. This will result in the ends turning brown. When the
blades no longer cut cleanly either sharpen them or replace them.
3) To safely operate the lawn mower ensure all four wheels are on the
ground and be careful not to lose your footing or control of the
lawn mower.
4) For healthy growth, grass should not be cut too short. The grass will
remain healthier, greener and require less watering.
5) Vary your cutting pattern from week to week, this will help to
prevent matting and graining of the grass.
6) If using the mulching function, and grass is piling up behind the
lawn mower during the cutting action, lift the lawn mower to the
next cutting height using the height adjustment lever.

Using the mower without the catcher (17) attached: the lawn mower
will mulch as it cuts and the fine grass clippings are distributed back
onto the grass surface without leaving piles of grass clippings.
To undertake this task, remove the catcher (17), and insert the
mulching block (37) into position.
Ensure the side ejector cover (12) is in the closed position. DO NOT use
the side discharge chute (13) when mulch and mowing.
4. EMPTYING THE CATCHER
As soon as you see mown grass debris on the lawn, the catcher (17)
needs to be emptied.
IMPORTANT! Before you remove the catcher (17), stop the
engine and wait until the blade system reaches a standstill.
1) Raise the rear discharge guard (7) and remove the catcher (17), then
release the rear discharge guard (7).
2) Empty the grass clippings from the catcher (17) into the appropriate
bin. Check with your local council for more information. Refit
catcher (17) per previous instructions.
3) If any grass clippings are caught in the rear discharge chute, clean it
using a broom or similar extension.
4) Do not remove grass debris from under the deck, or on/around the
blades by hand or with your feet. Instead use suitable tools such as a
brush or broom.
5) To ensure that the grass clippings can be blown into catcher (17),
the rear discharge chute, and the inside of the mower deck must be
cleared of any blockage.
Engine tipping
NOTE: Always ensure the engine is switched off and the spark plug cap
is removed before undertaking this task.
When cleaning, or performing any maintenance such as replacing
the blades, it is very important that the lawn mower is ONLY tipped
backwards (front wheels pointing upwards, and the handle bar to the
ground). Failing to do so will result in the engine damage. Should this
occur, the lawn mower should be taken to a lawn mower repair shop
which is not covered under warranty.

Should the engine idle or run rough at full speed with excessive bluey/
black smoke emanating from the muffler, it is possible that either the
engine was slightly tipped incorrectly (refer above). If the lawn mower
had previously been tipped, allow the engine to run for a few minutes
and the excess oil will burn out.
If the engine is not running at full speed, check the fuel is fresh, check
the oil level, and also inspect under the deck to ensure there is no build
up of grass.
Check the spark plug. If the lawn mower continues to underperform,
take the mower to your nearest authorised Service Agent.

Regular maintenance is most important for the best performance and
safe operation. Failure to periodically maintain the condition of your
lawn mower which results in malfunction of the lawn mower will void
warranty.
* Dispose of used engine oil / fuel in a manner that is compatible with
the environment. We suggest you take it in a sealed container to your
local service station for reclamation. Do not throw it in the trash or
pour it into the earth.
1. CLEANING
IMPORTANT: Never work on or touch any current-
conducting parts of the starting system while the engine
is running. Be sure to pull the spark plug cover from the spark
plug before doing any maintenance or assembly work. Never
carry out any work on the equipment while the engine is
running. Work that is not described in these operating
instructions, should only be carried out by authorized service
centres.
To ensure the best performance of your lawn mower, it is important to
keep it clean. Always clean your lawn mower immediately after use. Do
not allow grass cuttings and other debris to become dry and hard on
any of the lawn mowers surface. This will directly affect the cutting and
grass collection performance.
Make sure that the underside of the lawn mower deck is clean and
clear. Check if the rear discharge chute is free of grass remnants and
remove any if necessary.
Ensure the rear discharge chute and rear discharge guard (7) are clean.
The catcher (17) must always be emptied each use. Make sure that the
exterior of the engine is clear of all debris, cuttings and dirt.
Never clean the lawn mower using a water jet or a high-pressure
cleaner. Ensure that no water can get into the interior of the
equipment. Do not use aggressive cleaning agents such as cold cleaners
or petroleum ether.

chipped. Check that the end of the spark plug is
not blackened by carbon build up. Clean with a
soft wire brush if required.
5) Replace the spark plug if necessary and re-
Install the spark plug using the supplied spark
plug wrench (30) by rotating in an clockwise
direction to fit the spark plug.
Replace the spark plug
- once a month if the device is often used,
- when the insulating body is damaged,
- when the electrodes show excessive erosion,
- when the electrodes show excessive dirt or oil.
3. AIR FILTER MAINTENANCE
A dirty air filter (36) will restrict air flow to the carburettor. To prevent
carburettor malfunction, service the air filter (36) regularly. Filters thick
with debris will not allow the engine to breathe and result in difficult
starting and poor engine performance.
1) Remove the air filter cover (35) by disengaging the tab on the top of
the air filter cover (35), and then remove the air filter (36). (SEE FIG.
N1, N2) Check that the air filter (36) is clean and free of dirt.
2) To loosen debris, gently tap the air filter (36) on a hard surface or
use compressed air. If the air filter (36) is excessively dirty, replace
with a new filter.
NOTE:
Never clean the air filter with petrol or inflammable solvents. Clean
