The main power supply is engaged when the main plug is
plugged in a 220-240V, 50Hz AC outlet. To operate the unit,
press
STANDBY-ON to turn on the unit.

Dew Warning
Moisture condensation may occur inside the unit when it is
moved from a cold place to a warm place, or after heating a
cold room or under conditions of high humidity.
Do not use the unit at least for 2 hours until its inside is dry.
Caution
1) Do not attempt to open the cabinet. There are no parts
you can service inside. Refer all servicing to qualified
service personnel.
2) Slots and openings in the cabinet and the sides or bottom
are provided for ventilation. To ensure reliable operation
and to protect the unit from overheating, these openings
must not be blocked or covered.
Avoid installation in enclosed spaces such as bookcases
unless proper ventilation is provided.
3) Keep the unit away from radiators and other heat sources.
4) Do not push objects of any kind into the unit through the
cabinet slots or openings as they could touch electrically
live parts or short circuit parts resulting in a fire or electric
shock.
5) To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not expose this
apparatus to dripping or splashing, no objects filled with
liquids, such as vases, should be placed on the apparatus.
6) Use this unit in a horizontal (flat) subsoil only.
7) Do not place any combustible objects on the device
(candles, etc.).
8) The LCD panel used in this product is made of glass.
Therefore, it can break when the product is dropped or
applied with impact. Be careful not to be injured by
broken glass pieces in case the LCD panel breaks.
The LCD panel is a very high technology product with
921,600 thin film transistors, giving you fine picture
details. Occasionally, a few non-active pixels may appear
on the screen as a fixed point of blue, green or red. Please
note that this does not affect the performance of your
product.
9) Disconnect the mains plug to shut off when find troubles
or not in use.
10)The mains plug shall remain readily operable.
11)Read both manual instructions to ensure correct and safe
installation and interconnection of the unit in multimedia
systems.
12)Keep the distances 20 cm around apparatus of ventilation
openings.

Connection to Power (Only for U.K.)
Before Switching on make sure that the voltage of your
electricity supply is the same as that indicated on the rating
plate.
Mains Cord
This appliance may be fitted with a non-rewireable plug. If it
is necessary to change the fuse in a non-rewireable plug the fuse
cover must be refitted. If the fuse cover is lost or damaged, the
plug must not be used until a replacement available from the
appliance manufacturer is obtained.
It is important that the colour of the replacement fuse cover
corresponds with the rating marking on the base of the plug.
If the plug has to be changed because it is not suitable for your
socket, or becomes damaged, it should be cut off and an
appropriate plug fitted following the wiring instructions
below. The plug removed must be disposed of safely as
insertion into a 13A socket is likely to cause an electrical
hazard. For your own safety read the following instructions
carefully before attempting to connect this unit to mains.
The wires in this mains lead are coloured in accordance with
the following code:
BLUE=NEUTRAL, BROWN=LIVE
Important
As the colours of the wires in the mains lead of this appliance
may not correspond with the coloured markings identifying
the terminals in your plug, proceed as follows:-
The wire which is coloured blue must be connected to the
terminal which is marked with the letter N or coloured black.
The wire which is coloured brown must be connected to the
terminal which is marked with the letter L or coloured red.
No connection is to be made to the earth terminal of the plug.
If a 13 Amp (BS 1363) Plug is used, a 5 Amp Fuse must be
fitted, or if any other type of Plug is used a 5 Amp Fuse must
be fitted, either in the Plug or Adaptor, or on the Distribution
Board.

Installing the Batteries
1) Open the battery compartment cover.
2) Insert “R6” penlight batteries into battery compartment
in the direction as indicated by the polarity (
+/
)
markings. Batteries installed with incorrect polarity may
damage the remote unit.
3) Close the cover.
4) Push the cover on its top side until it clicks in order to fit
the cover completely to the compartment.
Switching TV / DVD Mode
To switch TV mode to DVD mode, press
PLAY B, insert a
disc or press
EJECT A on the unit.
To switch DVD mode to TV mode, press
INPUT SELECT
or / (prog.).

DIGITAL AUDIO OUT (COAXIAL) jack (DVD only)
Connect to an amplifier with digital input jacks such as
Dolby Digital decoder, etc. Use a commercially available
coaxial cable.

AV-IN1: Connect to the scart jack of an external devices
or set top box.
40. S-VIDEO input jack
AV-IN2: Connect to the S-video output jack of a video
camera or VCR using the S-video cable (not supplied).
Note: The S-VIDEO jack is given priority over the
VIDEO jack.

AV-IN2: Connect to the video output jack of a video
camera, VCR or video game.

AV-IN2: Connect to the left/right audio output jacks of

Note: The AUDIO L (input) jack is for mono input.
The sound is heard from both speakers. Use this jack for
monaural audio equipment to be hooked up.

Connect to an antenna, cable system or satellite system.

Connect headphone (not supplied) for personal

Note: Do not connect earphones that have an L-shaped
plug. The plug may interfere with the cabinet.

Setting up
Unpacking
The stand of this unit is folded when you purchased. Place this
unit face-down on a flat surface covered with the soft cloth.
Bend the stand slowly to forward until it clicks.
If you want to fold the stand again, insert a thin rod into the
hole in the right side of the stand as illustrated, bend the stand
backward while you keep pushing the hole.
Before Connecting
Please refer to the instruction books of this unit, Stereo
System or other devices as necessary to make the best
connections.
The following guideline is an option for the best sound quality
available on this unit.
Digital audio connections provide the clearest sound.
Connect the unit’s DIGITAL AUDIO OUT (COAXIAL)
to your amplifier or receiver (for DVD features only).
WARNING!
Never make or change connections with the power
switched on.
Note on a scart cable (Output):
When you use the scart cable to connect this unit to an
additional device, both video and audio signals of TV can
be delivered. (The video and audio signals of DVD and
external devices cannot be delivered.)
Connecting
Connecting the Cable
1) Insert the RF cable plug into the Aerial input jack at
the back of this unit.
2) Plug this unit into an AC outlet.
3) The ON/OFF (standby) indicator on the front panel
lights on, then press STANDBY-ON on the control panel or
the remote control to turn the unit on.

or / ) can also be used to turn the unit
on.
Connecting Additional Devices
You can connect an additional device such as decoder, satellite
receiver, camcorder, etc. to the AV-IN1 scart jack.
The scart jack to be connected is usually marked “AV” or
“TV” on the decoder or satellite receiver.
You can also use the AUDIO/VIDEO input jacks.
Note: To receive the signals from an external source, select
an input mode “AV1” or “AV2” on this unit by
pressing SELECT on the control panel or
INPUT SELECT on the remote control.
If you are using the AV-IN1 scart jack, select “AV1”.
If you are using the AUDIO/VIDEO input jacks,
select “AV2”.

Connecting AV terminals
When you watch a programme recorded on an another source,
use the AUDIO/VIDEO input jacks on the back of the unit.
When you connect a VCR (another source) to this unit,
connect the audio and video output jacks of the VCR (another
source) to the AUDIO L/R and VIDEO input jacks of this
unit.
Note: The S-VIDEO input jack is also available.
The S-VIDEO jack is given priority over the VIDEO
jack.
For Better Sound (for DVD Features)
This connection is optional for better sound.
For clear digital sound quality, use the DIGITAL AUDIO
OUT (COAXIAL) jack for the connection to your digital
audio system.
If the audio format of the digital output does not match the
capabilities of your receiver, the receiver may produce a
strong, distorted sound or no sound at all.
Hints for connecting to a Dolby Digital
decoder or MPEG decoder
By connecting this unit to a Multi-channel Dolby Digital
decoder, you can enjoy high-quality Multi-channel Dolby
Digital surround sound as heard in the movie theatres.
A digital component with a built-in MPEG 2 or Dolby
Digital
TM
allows you to enjoy the surround sound while
producing the effect of being in a movie theatre or a
concert hall.
If output is Dolby Digital encoded audio, connect to a
Dolby Digital decoder, and set “DOLBY DIGITAL” to
“BITSTREAM” in the AUDIO menu. (Refer to page 24.)
If output is MPEG encoded audio, connect to a MPEG
decoder, and set “MPEG” to “BITSTREAM” in the
AUDIO menu. (Refer to page 24.)
Hints for connecting to an MD deck or DAT
deck
The audio source on a disc in a Dolby Digital Multi-
channel surround format cannot be recorded as digital
sound by an MD or DAT deck.
Unless connected to a Dolby Digital decoder, set “DOLBY
DIGITAL” to “PCM” in the AUDIO menu. Playing a
DVD using incorrect settings may generate noise
distortion, and damage the speakers. (Refer to page 24.)
Set “DOLBY DIGITAL” and “MPEG” to “PCM” in the
AUDIO menu for connecting to an MD deck or DAT
deck. (Refer to page 24.)

Set up for Use
Unless stated, all operations described are based on remote control
use. Some operations can be carried out using the buttons on the
control panel.
Language Selection
If you want to change the language of the on-screen menu, follow the
procedure below.
1) Connect the power cord to a standard AC outlet.
Note: If some digits appear in the corner of the screen, press
STANDBY-ON without unplugging the power cord.
2) Press STANDBY-ON to turn on the TV.
3) Press SETUP so that the menu display appears on the TV screen.
4) Press Cursor K / L to point to “INITIAL”, then press
ENTER.
5) Press Cursor K / L to point to “LANGUAGE”, then press
ENTER.
6) Press Cursor K / L repeatedly to select your desired language,
then press
ENTER .
The selected language will be indicated by yellow.
7) Press SETUP to exit.
Automatic Channel Presetting
You can programme the tuner to scan only the channels that you can
receive in your area.
1) Press STANDBY-ON to turn on the TV.
2) Press SETUP so that the menu display appears on the TV screen.
3) Press Cursor K / L to point to “INITIAL”, then press
ENTER
.
4) Press Cursor K / L to point to “CH TUNING”, then press
ENTER
.
On DVD mode, this function is not available.
5) Press Cursor K / L to point to “AUTO”, then press ENTER.
The tuner scans and memorises all the active channels in your area.
When “AUTO” is completed, the lowest memorised channel
reappears on the screen, and you can use
PROG. +/
-
on the
control panel or
/ (prog.) on the remote control for the
memorised channels.
If you press
SETUP during the scanning, this operation will stop
and the lowest memorised channel will appear on the TV screen.
Manual Channel Presetting
You can preset a channel manually and individually.
1) Follow the steps 1) to 4) in theAutomatic Channel Presetting”.
2) Press Cursor K / L to point to “MANUAL”, then press
ENTER
.
3) (Only for LDD-C2006)
Press
Cursor K / L to point to “SYSTEM”, then press ENTER
to display the desired system.
4) Press Cursor K / L to point to “POSITION”, then press
ENTER
.
5) Press the Number buttons or Cursor K / L to select your
desired position number, then press
ENTER
.
You can select position number 01-99.
If “ON” appears on the right side of “SKIP”, press
Cursor K / L to point to “SKIP”. Then, press ENTER to
select “OFF”.
If you want to remove scrambled signals, press
Cursor K / L repeatedly to point to “DECODER”. Then,
press ENTER to select “ON”.
6) Press Cursor K / L to point to “CHANNEL”, then press
ENTER
.
7) Press Cursor K / L to start scanning.
The tuner will begin to search up or down automatically.
When a channel is found, the unit will stop searching and the
picture will appear on the TV screen.
You can select desired channel number by using
the Number buttons. You must refer to the following
Channel Plan table and press three digits to select the channel
number.
(To select channel 24, press “
0” button first and then press “2
and “
4”.)
If this is the channel you want, press ENTER.
This unit can receive Hyper and Oscar frequency bands.
8) Press SETUP to exit.
Note: To confirm that a channel has been added, press
/ (prog.).
If you insert the RF cable plug into the Aerial input jack
after manual channel presetting, a picture will be distorted.
In this case, press
/ (prog.) to select the same channel
again.

Decoder Allocation
Some TV channels transmit encoded TV signals which can only be
viewed with a purchased or hired decoder. You can connect such a
decoder to this unit. The following function will automatically
activate the connected decoder for the desired TV channel.
1) Press STANDBY-ON to turn on the TV.
2) Press / (prog.) or the Number buttons to select the TV
channel which you would like to allocate the decoder to.
3) Press SETUP so that the menu display appears on the TV screen.
4) Press Cursor K / L to point to “INITIAL”, then press
ENTER
.
5) Press Cursor K / L to point to “CH TUNING”, then press
ENTER
.
6) Press Cursor K / L to point to “MANUAL”, then press
ENTER.
7) Press Cursor K / L to point to “DECODER”.
8) Press ENTER to select “ON” (decoder switched on).
To switch off the decoder, press
ENTER to select “OFF”.
9) Press SETUP to exit.
The decoder has now been allocated to this TV channel.
To Skip a Preset Channel
The channels you can no longer receive or seldom watch can
be set to be skipped when you access channels by pressing
/ (prog.).
1)
Follow the steps 1) to 4) in the “Automatic Channel Presetting”.
2) Press Cursor K / L to point to “MANUAL”, then press
ENTER
.
3) Press Cursor K / L to point to “POSITION”, then press
ENTER
.
4) Press the Number buttons or Cursor K / L to select relevant
position number, then press
ENTER
.
5) Press Cursor K / L to point to “SKIP”, then press ENTER to
select “ON”.
To memorise the channel again, press
ENTER
. “ON” will
change to “OFF”.
6) Press SETUP to exit.
Note: To confirm that a channel has been deleted, press
/ (prog.).
Channel Reprogramming
You can move a channel allocated to a position to another while
keeping the total number of the positions the same. When you move
a channel, all the other channels in the positions will be affected.
1) Follow the steps 1) to 4) in theAutomatic Channel Presetting”.
2) Press Cursor K / L repeatedly to point to “MOVE”, then press
ENTER
.
3) Press Cursor K / L repeatedly to select the position number you
want to change the channel, then press
ENTER
.
You cannot select a position number where “
---” appears next
to the number. This is because “SKIP” is set to “ON” for this
position number.
4) Press Cursor K / L repeatedly to move the selected channel to
the programme number you want to assign, then press
ENTER
.
5) Press SETUP to exit.
Stereo Sound System
This TV will receive stereo and bilingual broadcasts.
Selecting the Sound Mode
You can select each mode by pressing
SOUND SELECT on the
remote control. Each mode is indicated on the TV screen as following.

Operations
Watching a TV Programme
1) Press
STANDBY-ON to turn on the unit.
2) Select the desired channel with
/ (prog.) or
the Number buttons.
• Enter a channel number as two digits within 2.5
seconds for the quickest results. For example, to select
channel 6, press
0 and 6. If you only press 6, channel 6
will be selected after 2.5 seconds.
• You can only select channels 1–99.
3) Adjust the volume to the desired listening level using
VOL. +/
-
on the control panel or +/
-
(vol.) on the remote
control.
• If you want to mute the sound temporarily (e.g. during
a telephone call), press
(mute) on the remote
control. When you press
(mute) again, the sound
will return at its original volume level.
4) Adjust picture controls for a natural looking image.
(See “Picture Adjustment”.)
Note: If you press / (prog.) in the DVD mode, you can
change the TV channels. Even if you turn off the unit
in the DVD mode, when you turn it on again, it will
go into the TV mode.
If a disc is inside the unit, “DISC INSIDE” message is
displayed on the screen for 10 seconds.
External Input Mode
To use the RGB scart jack for connecting a device, select
“AV1”.
To use the AUDIO/VIDEO input jacks, select “AV2”.
Using INPUT SELECT
Press INPUT SELECT to select “AV1” or “AV2” mode.
Using the Number buttons
Press 0, 0, 1 with the Number buttons, so that “AV1” appears
on the TV screen.
Press
0, 0, 2 with the Number buttons, so that “AV2” appears
on the TV screen.
Note: When you use the S-VIDEO connection, S-VIDEO
jack is given priority over the VIDEO jack.
TV Colour System Change
Different countries use different television colour systems. You
can change the system by pressing
COLOR SYSTEM.
When you select “AUTO” by pressing
COLOR SYSTEM, this
unit will distinguish the system automatically according to the
input signal from the tuner or external devices.
If the picture on the TV screen is black and white, select the
system manually by using
COLOR SYSTEM. Each time you
press
COLOR SYSTEM, TV screen will change as follows.

Teletext Reception
Many TV channels transmit Teletext information along with
their TV channels. With this unit, you can retrieve and display
it on the screen using the built-in Teletext decoder.
1) Press
(text) to switch the Teletext decoder on. Your
unit now shows Teletext for the TV channel you have
selected. Press
(text) again to show Teletext in
transparent mode.
2) If you want to select another page, type in the number of
the page with
the Number buttons.
Note: To enlarge fonts, press EXPAND.
To select Teletext subpages, press SUB CODE.
To directly select the page numbers shown at the
bottom of the TV screen, use RED/GREEN/YELLOW/
CYAN.
To call up the hidden information, press REVEAL.
To hold the current page, press (hold).
To go back to the start page, press (index).
3) Press
(text) to switch the Teletext decoder off.
Setting the Sleep Timer
The sleep timer function allows you to have the power
automatically turn off after a set time period.
1) Press
STANDBY-ON to turn on the TV and press SLEEP
on the remote control.
2) You may change the sleep time by pressing SLEEP on the
remote control repeatedly. The timer can be set up to 90
minutes. Each time
SLEEP is pressed the time increases by
30 minutes. (The timer display counts up and sleep timer
will be displayed on the screen when you press SLEEP on
the remote control.)
Note: When you disconnect the unit from the AC outlet or
when you have a power failure, the sleep time will be
lost.
To Cancel the Sleep Timer
Press SLEEP repeatedly until “0” is displayed.

Picture Adjustment
The picture can be adjusted according to your personal
preferences. These settings are automatically stored after
exiting the picture menu.
1) Press
PICTURE, then press Cursor K / L to select the
desired control “BRIGHTNESS”, “CONTRAST”,
“COLOUR”, “SHARPNESS” or “TINT”.
2) Press
Cursor s / B to adjust to your desired level within 5
seconds.
3) When done, press
PICTURE to exit.
“TINT” appears only when receiving NTSC signals from an
additional device connected by either RGB scart jack or
AUDIO/VIDEO input jacks.
Note: In the above steps, the picture adjustment display will
disappear from the TV screen automatically after
about 60 seconds if you do not press any buttons.
Back Light Selection
1) Press
SETUP so that the menu display appears on the TV
screen.
2) Press Cursor K / L to point to “BACK LIGHT”.
3) Press ENTER to select the mode you wish.
4) When done, press
SETUP to exit.
Status Display
To check the Channel number and Audio mode, press
DISPLAY. Each time you press DISPLAY, TV screen will
change as illustrated:

About the Discs
Playable Discs
The following discs can be played back on this unit.
Note:
*1: This unit conforms to the PAL colour system. Also you can play
discs recorded with the NTSC system via a PAL system TV set.
*2: The region code 2 or ALL are marked on DVDs as follows.
*3: Certain DVD-Video discs do not operate as described in this
manual due to the intentions of the disc’s producers.
*4: Only the discs recorded in the video format and finalised can
be played back. Discs unfinalised cannot be played back.
Depending on the recording status of a disc, the disc may not
be played back at all or normally (the picture or sound may
not be smooth, etc.).
*5: Scratched or stained discs may not be played back.
*6: Some discs cannot be played back because of incompatible
recording conditions, characteristics of the recorder or special
properties of discs.
*7: You can play back discs which bear marks above. If you use
nonstandardised discs, this unit may not play them back.
Even if they are played back, the sound or video quality will
be compromised.
*8: If the disc’s recording space is small (Disc size is shorter than
55 mm across), it may not be played back.
*9: Do not glue paper or put stickers onto the disc. These may be
damage the disc, and the unit may not read it correctly.

Playing a Disc
Basic Playback
Getting started
Turn on the power of the TV, amplifier and any other
components which are connected to the TV.
Make sure the TV and audio receiver (commercially
available) are set to the correct channel.
1) Press
STANDBY-ON.
ON/OFF (standby) indicator lights up.
2) Open the disc door manually.
3) Insert a disc with the label facing back of the unit to start
playing it. By simply placing the disc gently into the slot,
it will be loaded automatically.
• Playback will start from the first chapter/track of the
disc.
• If the playback does not start automatically, press
PLAY B.
• When you play back a DVD with a title menu
recorded, it may appear on the screen. In this case, refer
to “Title Menu”.
4) Press
STOP C to stop playback.
5) Press
EJECT A on the control panel to remove the disc
from the unit.
Note: A “prohibited icon” may appear at the
top-right on the TV screen during
operation, warning that a prohibited
operation has been encountered by this
unit or the disc.
When the DVD mode has been switched to the TV
mode, the DVD mode shuts down first and then the
TV picture and sound appears in about 4 seconds.
Similarly, when
STANDBY-ON is pressed to turn off in
the DVD mode, this mode shuts down first and then
the unit is turned off.
Some DVDs may be played from title 2 or 3 due to
specific programmes.
During the playback of two layered disc, pictures may
stop for a moment. This happens while the 1st layer is
being switched to the 2nd layer. This is not a
malfunction.
DVDs recorded with the NTSC system can be viewed
with this unit.
It may take a time to deliver the picture or the sound.
This is not a malfunction.
Press PLAY B or EJECT A on the control panel or
insert a disc to switch TV mode to DVD mode.
Press / (prog.) or INPUT SELECT to switch
DVD mode to TV mode.
Depending on the TV, when playing back a NTSC
DVD on a PAL TV, the picture may roll up or down,
shrink vertically, and black bars may appear at the
both top and bottom of the screen.
General Features
DVDs may contain menus to navigate the disc and access
special features. Enter the appropriate Number buttons or
press Cursor K / L / s / B to highlight your selection in the
DVD menu and press ENTER to confirm.
Note: Unless stated, all operations described are based on
remote control use. Some operations can be carried
out with the buttons on the control panel.

DISC MENU.
The DVD menu will appear.
2) If the feature is not available, symbol may appear on
the TV screen.
3) If disc menu is available on the disc, audio languages,
subtitle options, chapters for the title and other options
will appear for selection.
4) Press
Cursor K / L / s / B to select an item, and ENTER
to confirm selection.

TITLE.
The title menu will appear.
2) If the feature is not available, symbol may appear on
the TV screen.

About the PBC Function of Video CD
PBC stands for Play Back Control, you can play interactive
software using a menu screens.
Refer to instructions of Video CD.
This unit conforms to ver.1.1 and ver.2.0 of Video CD
standard, with PBC function.
Ver.1.1 (without PBC function): You can enjoy playback
picture as well as Music CD.
Ver.2.0 (with PBC function): Press
DISPLAY, and “PBC”
appears on the TV screen when a Video CD with PBC
function is loaded.
Video CD with PBC function has its original menu. Menu
operation may vary depending on the disc. Refer to the
manual included in the disc for details.
Cancelling and Calling Back PBC Function
When playing Video CDs with PBC function, some
operations (e.g. select and repeat tracks, resume) cannot be
performed unless the PBC function is cancelled temporarily.
1) Insert a Video CD.
Title menu will appear on the TV screen.
2) Press STOP C.
3) Press the Number buttons to enter the desired track
number.
PBC function is now cancelled and the playback of the
Video CD will start.
4) To call back PBC function, press
STOP C twice, and then
press PLAY B.

Insert an MP3/JPEG/DivX
®
-format disc, then press
DISC MENU. The FILE LIST will appear on the TV screen.
1) Press
Cursor K / L to select the desired group or track.

If a group is selected, press Cursor B or ENTER to go on
to the track selection screen. Press Cursor K / L to
choose a track, then press PLAY B or ENTER.
If a track is selected, press PLAY B or ENTER to start
playing tracks. Playback will start from the selected track
and will play one after another.
•Press Cursor s to go back to the previous hierarchy
(except for the top hierarchy).
•Press
TITLE to return to the first item.
2) Press STOP C to stop playback.
Note: Folders are known as Groups, and files are known as
Tracks.
Folders are accompanied by icon.
MP3 files are accompanied by icon.
JPEG files are accompanied by icon.

A maximum of 255 folders can be recognised.
A maximum of 999 files can be recognised.
Up to 8 hierarchies can be recognised.
The name of group and track can be displayed in up
to 25 characters. Unrecognizable characters will be
replaced with asterisks. The ninth and deeper
hierarchies cannot be displayed.
Unplayable groups and tracks may be displayed
depending on the recording conditions.
For MP3 file recorded in Variable Bit Rate(VBR), the
unit may not display the actual elapsed time.
Progressive JPEGs (JPEG files saved in the progressive
format) can not be played back on this unit.
High resolution JPEG files take longer to be
displayed.
When playing back the files recorded in high bit rates,
the images can be interrupted in some occasions.
Although DivX
®
logo has been obtained for this
player, it may not be able to play back some data,
depending on the disc characteristics, bit rates, or
audio format settings, etc.
Use the software recognised by DivX
®
, Inc. when you
make DivX
®
files.
When using tools or utilities to make up DivX
®
files,
read their instruction manual beforehand.
A DivX
®
file whose file size exceeds 2GB cannot be
played back.
If a large-sized DivX
®
file is selected, it may take a
while to start the playback (over 20 seconds
sometimes).
If DivX
®
files wrote on CD discs cannot be played
back, rewrite them on a DVD disc and try to play
back.

Constant bitrate of image between 500 kbps and
1,500 kbps is recommended if you make DivX

If you insert a CD-R/RW with DivX

Subtitle
The subtitle created by the user can be displayed during DivX
®
playback.
1) After select the DivX
®
file, the SUBTITLE LIST will
appear when the “DivX SUBTITLE” setting is except
“OFF”. (Refer to page 23.)
2) Press Cursor K / L to select the desired extension you
want to display, then press ENTER. DivX
®
with the
subtitle starts playback. The subtitle cannot be displayed
when the setting is “OFF”.
If there is more than one extension, the extension
selection appears in the SUBTITLE LIST.
Note: DivX
®
subtitle can only be displayed according to the
same name with an extension of the DivX
®
file name.
Files whose extension is other than “.SMI”, “.smi”,
“.SRT”, “.srt”, “.SUB” and “.sub” will not be listed in
the SUBTITLE LIST.
This unit cannot be recognised if the DivX
®
file and
its subtitle file are not in the one folder.
The subtitle may not be displayed if the file size is too
large.
To change the subtitle, refer to “Subtitle Language”
on page 18 if multiple subtitles are available.
The subtitle cannot display if the on-screen
information is displayed.
If “DivX SUBTITLE” is set to “OFF” in
LANGUAGE menu, the SUBTITLE LIST will not
be displayed even if you select a DivX
®
file with
created subtitle. (Refer to “DivX

page 23.)
Unrecognisable characters will be replaced with
asterisks.

Kodak Picture CD
The unit can also run JPEG files stored on Kodak Picture
CDs. The Picture CD is a service to convert photographs
taken by a conventional film camera into digital data and write
the data on a CD. You can enjoy picture images on the TV set
by playing back the Picture CDs.
For details of Kodak Picture CD, contact a shop that deals
with developing service of Kodak Inc.
1) Insert a Kodak Picture CD, press
STOP C twice, then
Kodak Picture CD menu will appear.
If all menu items cannot be displayed in the screen
scope, “
G” appears at the right bottom of the screen,
indicating that you can view remaining items on the
next page. “H” appears at the left bottom of the screen,
indicating that you can view other items on the previous
page. The track number of the currently highlighted
item and the total tracks are shown at the centre bottom
of the screen.
•If
G” is shown at the right bottom, use SKIP G to
view the next page. If “H” is shown at the left bottom,
use SKIP H to view the previous page.
It may take some time until all menu items are displayed
on the menu screen.
2) Press Cursor K / L / s / B to select a desired track to be
played, then press PLAY B or ENTER.
If a Kodak Picture CD file is selected, an image will be
played back from the selected track and go to the next
one in turn.
3) Press
STOP C to stop playback.
Notes on JPEG and Kodak Picture CD
A track is displayed for 5 seconds or 10 seconds and then
the next track is displayed. (Refer to page 25.)
During JPEG or Kodak Picture CD playback, press
Cursor K / L to rotate a picture 90 degrees.
Slide Show Mode
You can switch to the slide show mode during playback.
1) During playback, press
MODE repeatedly until Slide Show
menu appears.

Adjustment of Picture Size
The overall picture cannot be displayed and the edge of the
picture can be cut out. In this case, you can adjust the size of
the JPEG playback image on screen.
1) During playback, press
MODE repeatedly until SHRINK
menu appears.
The setting screen will not be displayed while in the
Stop mode or from the FILE LIST.
2) Press
ENTER.
NORMAL : to display the image at 100% of the picture
size.
SMALL : to display the image at 95% of the picture
size.
The default setting is “NORMAL”.
This feature may have no effect on some files (e.g. Files
with a small picture size).
3) Press
BACK to exit the menu.
Resume
1) During playback, press
STOP C.
Resume message will appear on the TV screen.
2) Press
PLAY B.
Playback will resume from the point at which playback
was stopped.
To cancel resume, press

x1.3 and x0.8 Rapid Play with Voice
Available only on discs recorded in the Dolby Digital format,
x1.3 and x0.8 Rapid Play with Voice plays back in slightly
faster/slower speed while keeping the sound quality as in the
normal playback.
1) During playback, press
MODE repeatedly until SPEECH
RATE menu appears.
The current setting appears.
2) Press
Cursor K / L to switch among “ ” (x1.3), “
(x0.8) and “OFF”.

The Zoom function allows you to enlarge the video image and

For discs with DivX
®
files, the screen only displays the
number of subtitle languages.
Camera Angle
Some DVD discs contain scenes which have been shot
simultaneously from various angles. You can change the
camera angle when the ( ) icon appears on the screen.
1) During playback, press MODE repeatedly until ANGLE
menu appears.
The selected angle will be displayed on the display bar at
the top of the screen.
2) Press
Cursor K / L to select your desired angle.
3) Press BACK to exit the menu.
Note: If the “ANGLE ICON” setting is “OFF” in the
OTHERS menu, the ( ) icon will not appear.
Stereo Sound Mode
1) During playback, press

Virtual Surround
You can enjoy stereophonic virtual surround effects on your
existing stereo system.
1) During playback, press
MODE repeatedly until V.S.S.
menu appears.
2) Press Cursor K / L to change a value to “1”(natural
effect), “2”(emphasised effect) or “OFF”(original sound).
3) Press BACK to exit the menu.
Note: Virtual Surround will not be effective if the sound
mode is set to something other than “STEREO” (for
Audio CDs and Video CDs only).
(Refer to “Stereo Sound Mode”.)
Turn down the level or turn it “OFF” if the sound is
distorted.
The setting will be saved even if this unit is turned off.
This function cannot be used during x1.3 and x0.8
Rapid Play with Voice. (Refer to page 17.)
Track Search
There are three ways to begin the playback of a specific track
on a disc.
Using the Number buttons
1) Press the Number buttons to enter the desired track
number.
Playback will start at the selected track.
For any discs, to play a single-digit track, press the
number directly (e.g. for track 3, press
3).
For the disc with less than 100 tracks, to play a double-
digit track, press
+10, then the number (e.g. for track 26,
press
+10, 2, 6).
For the disc with more than 100 tracks, to play a double-
digit track, press
+10, 0, then the number of the track
(e.g. for track 26, press
+10, 0, 2, 6). To play a triple-
digit track, press +10, then the number of the track (e.g.
for track 126, press
+10, 1, 2, 6).
Using MODE
1) During playback, press MODE repeatedly until SEARCH
menu appears.
The Track Search display appears.
2) Within 60 seconds, select a desired track number using
the Number buttons.
For the disc with more than 10 but less than 100 tracks,
to play a single-digit track, press
0 first, then the number
of the track (e.g. for track 3, press
0, 3).
For the disc with more than 100 tracks, to play a single
or a double-digit track, press
0 first, then the number of
the track (e.g. for track 3, press
0, 0, 3 and for track 26,

In any other cases, just press the number of the track.
Playback will start at the selected track.

Using SKIP H G
During playback, press SKIP G to move to the next track.
Press it repeatedly to skip subsequent tracks.
Press SKIP H to go back to the beginning of the current
track. Press it repeatedly to go back to the previous tracks.

SKIP H G are pressed while the playback is paused,
the playback will be paused again after skipping to the
next track.
To skip JPEG files, use
Cursor s / B.
Note: SKIP H G are not available when playback is
stopped.
Chapter / Title Search
Using MODE
1) During playback, press MODE repeatedly until SEARCH
menu appears.

3) Enter the desired chapter/title number using

menu appears.
2) Press Cursor K / L to select Marker Search menu.
3) Press Cursor s / B to select 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10
and ensure that “_ _ _ _:_ _:_ _” appears in the display.
4) When the disc reaches the desired point, press
ENTER.
The Title or Track and elapsed time will appear on the
TV screen.
5) To return to the marker later, press
MODE repeatedly until
the Marker Search screen appears and

choose the desired marker, then press

Programmed Playback
You may determine the order in which tracks will be played.

programme will be stored unless either the disc is

“Repeat”.)
Random Playback
This function shuffles the playing order of tracks instead of
playback in the original sequence.
1) In Stop mode, press

In Setup menu, QUICK mode, CUSTOM mode and INITIALIZE mode (refer to pages 23-25) are available. QUICK mode
consists of the setting menus often needed, and you can make all settings required in CUSTOM mode. You can make the settings

Language Setting
Language setting can be varied with some DVDs or DivX

The default setting is “4:3 LETTER BOX”.
STILL MODE:
AUTO : Automatically select the best resolution setting
(“FRAME” or “FIELD”) based on the data
characteristics of the pictures.
FIELD : Select “FIELD” when the pictures are still unstable
even if “AUTO” is selected. “FIELD” stabilises the
pictures, although the picture quality may become
coarse due to the limited amount of data.
FRAME : Select “FRAME” to display relatively motionless
pictures in higher resolution. “FRAME” improves the
picture quality, although it may unstabilise the
pictures due to simultaneous output of two FIELD
data.
Note: An individual picture on TV screen is called as
FRAME, which consists of two separate images called
as FIELD. Some pictures may be blurred at the
“AUTO” setting in Still mode due to their data
characteristics.
•Press
Cursor K / L to select an option, then press ENTER.
This adjusts the resolution of pictures while in the Still
mode.
The default setting is “AUTO”.

Audio Setting
Choose the appropriate audio settings for your equipment. It
only affects during the playback of DVDs.
1) In Stop mode, press
SETUP twice.
2) Press
Cursor s / B to select “CUSTOM”, then press
ENTER.
CUSTOM mode screen will appear.
3) Press
Cursor s / B to select “AUDIO”, then press
ENTER to confirm.
4) Press
Cursor K / L to select the below items.
5) Press
ENTER repeatedly to select “ON” or “OFF”.
6) Press
SETUP to exit.
DRC (Dynamic Range Control):
ON : to compress the sound range.
OFF : to output an original sound range.
This function is only available on DVDs recorded in the
Dolby Digital format.
The default setting is “ON”.
DOWN SAMPLING:
ON : to convert 96 kHz format into 48 kHz.
OFF : to output the original sound.
This function is only available when this unit is connected
to another source using the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT
(COAXIAL) jack.
When playing a disc with copyright protection, the sound
will be down sampled at 48 kHz, even if you set to “OFF”.
The default setting is “ON”.
DOLBY DIGITAL:
BITSTREAM : to output Dolby Digital signals.
PCM : to convert Dolby Digital signals to PCM
(2 channel) signals.
Set to “BITSTREAM” when this unit is connected to a
Dolby Digital decoder.
The default setting is “BITSTREAM”.
MPEG:
BITSTREAM : to output MPEG formatted sound.
PCM : to convert MPEG signals to PCM signals.
Set to “BITSTREAM” when this unit is connected to a
MPEG decoder.
The default setting is “PCM”.
Parental Control
Parental Control prevents viewing of DVDs that exceed your
rating limit. The password is required to change the
“PARENTAL LEVEL”.
This feature prevents your children from viewing
inappropriate materials.
1) In Stop mode, press
SETUP twice.
2) Press
Cursor s / B to select “CUSTOM”, then press
ENTER.
CUSTOM mode screen will appear.
3) Press
Cursor s / B to select “PARENTAL”, then press
ENTER.
4) Press the Number buttons to enter your 4-digit password.
When doing this for the first time, enter any 4-digit
number by pressing
the Number buttons (except for
4737), then press ENTER. That number will be used as
the password from the second time onward. Record your
password in case you forget it.
If you forget the password, press
4, 7, 3, 7. The original
password will be cleared and parental levels will be set to
ALL”. Enter a new 4-digit password, then press ENTER.
5) Press
Cursor K / L to select “PARENTAL LEVEL”, then
press ENTER.
6) Press Cursor K / L to select the desired level, then press
ENTER. For details, see below.
7) Press SETUP to exit.
PARENTAL LEVEL:
ALL : All parental locks are cancelled.
8 : DVD softwares of any grades (adult/general/children)
can be played back.
7 to 2 : Only DVD softwares intended for general use
and children can be played back.
1 : Only DVD softwares intended for children can be
played back.
Note: This function may not work on some DVDs. Make
sure if the parental lock function operates in the way
you have set.
To Change the Password
1) Follow the steps 1) to 4) above.
2) Press
Cursor K / L to select “PASSWORD CHANGE”,
then press
ENTER.
3) Enter a new 4-digit password, then press
ENTER.
4) Press
SETUP to exit.

ANGLE ICON:
ON : to show the angle icon when multiple camera angles are
available during DVD playback.
OFF : to hide the angle icon.

SCREEN SAVER:
ON : to start the screen saver programme when there is no
input from the unit for 5 minutes in Stop mode.
OFF : not to start the screen saver programme.
The default setting is “OFF”.
SLIDE SHOW:
5sec : to display each image for 5 seconds.
10sec : to display each image for 10 seconds.
•Press
Cursor K / L to select an option, then press ENTER.
The default setting is “5sec”.
DivX(R) VOD:
This unit allows you to use the DivX
®
Video-On-Demand
(VOD) services. You can play back the files purchased or
rental from the VOD services. You need to have a
registration code to purchase or rental VOD files. Please
visit www.divx.com/vod for more details.
Note: You cannot play back the DivX
®
VOD files obtained
with different registration codes on this unit.
You cannot play back the DivX
®
VOD files, of which
rental period has been expired. In such case, press
DISC MENU and select other files that can be played
back.
Some DivX

VOD files are restricted with the limited
playable times (you cannot play them back beyond the
limit). If your DivX

VOD file has such limit, the
playback confirmation screen will appear.
Press
Cursor s / B to select “YES” if you want to play
back the file, or to select “NO” if you do not wish to

To Reset All the Settings of the Setup Screen
This function allows you to return all selections of Setup
(except for “PARENTAL”) to their default settings.

Cursor K / L to select “YES”, then press ENTER
twice. All the settings (except for “PARENTAL”) will be
cleared.
To cancel the initialization, select “NO”.

Troubleshooting Guide
If the unit does not perform properly when operated as instructed in this Owner’s Manual, check the unit, consulting the
following checklist.
WARNING: Under no circumstances should you try to repair the system yourself, as this will
invalidate the warranty. Do not open the system as there is a risk of electric
shock.
If a fault occurs, first check the points listed below before taking the system for
repair.

No power Check if the AC power cord is properly connected.
This unit does not respond to the remote control.

Aim the remote control directly at the sensor on the front

Some functions are not available in specific modes, but this is not a malfunction. Read the description in this Owner’s Manual
for details on correct operations.
Playback from a desired track and Random Playback are not available during Programmed Playback.
Some functions are prohibited on some discs.
If you are unable to remedy a problem by following these hints, consult your dealer or service centre.

No DTS audio output
This unit does not support DTS audio. This is not a
malfunction.
Picture freezes momentarily during playback.
Check the disc for fingerprints/ scratches and clean with a
soft cloth wiping from centre to edge.
Disc cannot be played.
Ensure the disc label is facing up.
Check if the disc is defective by trying another disc.
Handle a disc with special care so that it does not have
fingerprints, scratches, or dusts on its surface.
No return to start-up screen when disc is
removed.
Reset the unit by turning it off and on again.
This unit does not respond to some operating
commands during playback.
Operations may not be permitted by the disc.
Refer to the instructions of the disc.
This unit cannot read CDs/DVDs.
Use a commonly available cleaning CD/DVD to clean the
lens before sending this unit for repair.
Disc cannot be taken out.
Press and hold
EJECT A on the unit for more than 5
seconds.

Maintenance
Servicing
Please refer to relevant topics on the “Troubleshooting
Guide” on page 27 before returning the product.
Should your unit become inoperative, do not try to correct
the problem by yourself. There are no user-serviceable parts
inside. Turn off, unplug the power cord, and take the unit
to Service Centre for servicing.
Cleaning the Cabinet
Use a soft cloth slightly moistened with a mild detergent
solution. Do not use a solution containing alcohol, spirits,
ammonia or abrasives.
Cleaning Discs
When a disc becomes dirty, clean it with a cleaning cloth.
Wipe the disc from the centre out. Do not wipe in a
circular motion.
Do not use solvents such as benzine, thinner, commercially
available cleaners, detergent, abrasive cleaning agents or
antistatic spray intended for analogue records.
Cleaning the Disc Lens
If the player still does not perform properly when it is
operated while referring to the relevant sections and to
“Troubleshooting Guide” in this Owner’s Manual, the laser
optical pickup unit may be dirty. Consult your dealer or an
Authorised Service Centre for inspection and cleaning of
the laser optical pickup unit.
Disc Handling
Handle the discs so that fingerprints and dust do not
adhere to the surfaces of the discs.
Always store the disc in its protective case when it is not
used.
A Note about Recycling
This product’s packaging materials are
recyclable and can be reused. Please dispose of
any materials in accordance with your local
recycling regulations.
This product consists of materials which can
be recycled and reused if disassembled by a
specialised company.
Batteries should never be thrown away or
incinerated but disposed of in accordance with
your local regulations concerning chemical
wastes.
