Important notes
Additional safety notes for devices with radio components
Switch off the radio components (the ON/OFF switch must be in the "OFF" position) when you
are at an airport or driving in a car.
Switch off the radio components (the ON/OFF switch must be in the "OFF" position) when you
are in a hospital, an operating room or near a medical electronics system. The transmitted
radio waves can impair the operation of medical devices.
Switch off the radio components (the ON/OFF switch must be in the "OFF" position), when you
take the device close to flammable gases or into hazardous environments (e.g. petrol station,
paintshops), as the transmitted radio waves can cause an explosion or a fire.
The range of the radio connection is dependent on environmental and ambient conditions.
With data traffic via a wireless connection, it is also possible for unauthorised third parties to
receive data.
Fujitsu Siemens Computers GmbH cannot be held responsible for radio or television faults arising
from unauthorised modifications made to this device. Fujitsu Siemens Computers GmbH is,
furthermore, not responsible for replacing and / or exchanging connector cables and devices which
have not been specified by Fujitsu Siemens Computers GmbH. The user bears sole responsibility for
repairing faults arising from such unauthorised modifications made to a device and for replacing

Important notes
Protecting the screen
The Tablet PC is designed to provide you with years of service. Using a screen protector will help
ensure that the screen remains as clear as possible. When installed, the screen protector becomes a
durable, replaceable writing surface that protects the actual screen from abrasion.
Please contact your dealer for additional screen protectors.
During normal use of the Tablet PC, small particles from the environment can become
embedded in the pen tip and scratch the screen. To prevent scratching the screen, ensure
that a screen protector is installed before using your Tablet PC. The warranty does not
cover a scratched screen.
!
To install a new screen protector on your Tablet PC:
If a screen protector is already fitted to the screen, remove it before installing the new screen
protector.
The screen protector is held onto the screen surface by a thin strip of adhesive around the
edges. There is a angled corner in one corner of the screen protector. It allows you to slide your
fingernail under the screen protector for easy removal.
The Tablet PC is not waterproof. Do not pour liquids onto the system or wash it with a
heavily soaked cloth.
Do not place items on the top of the display as this may cause damage.
!
A26391-K222-Z121-1-7619, edition 2 5
Important notes
Remove the protective coating from the adhesive side of the screen protector.
Align the screen protector with the edges of the screen and place it on the screen surface with
the adhesive side downwards (see illustration).
Apply pressure to the screen protector with your finger. When doing so, perform wiping
movements outwards towards the edges to prevent air bubbles and then firmly press down the
edges.
To ensure a good seal between the screen protector and the display, do not lift the screen protector
from the display once it has been applied.
6 A26391-K222-Z121-1-7619, edition 2
Important notes
A plastic protective coating is provided on the screen protector that must be pulled off before
touching the screen with the pen.
Carefully lift off the protective plastic coating at the angled corner. Now you can carefully pull
off the protective coating (see illustration).
The screen protector is now transparent.
Wipe the screen protector with a soft dry cloth to remove any low-tack adhesive.
This will help prevent the pen tip from squeaking.
The screen protector is now installed.
i
The adhesive sets completely within 48 hours.

permissible to do so.
Make sure that the rated current of the mains adapter is not higher than that of the power
system to which you connect it (see technical data for the mains adapter).
When travelling in other countries
If you are travelling abroad, check that the mains adapter can be operated with the local mains
voltage. If this is not the case, obtain the appropriate mains adapter for your Tablet PC.
Do not use any other voltage converter!
Check whether the local power supply and the specifications of the power cable are
compatible. If this is not the case, buy a power cable that matches the local conditions. Do not
use a connection adapter for electrical devices to connect the Tablet PC.
Do not use a connection adapter for electrical devices to connect the notebook.
Enquire with the corresponding government office in the country you will be travelling in as to
whether you may operate the radio components integrated into your Tablet PC there (also see
"

Using the Tablet PC
This chapter describes the basics for operating your Tablet PC.
!
Please refer to the notes in "
Important notes".
System modes
Before you begin using the Tablet PC, review the different system modes that the system provides.
Your system may be configured to enter some of these modes automatically after a period of
inactivity to conserve battery power.
ON mode
The system is running. The screen is on.
Idle mode
Some system functions are regulated or turned off to conserve power. The system returns to ON
mode when pen activity or other input is detected.
Suspend mode
Suspend-to-RAM mode
All system functions are turned off to conserve power. Power to memory is on, maintaining data in
programs that were running before system operation was suspended.
The system does not respond to the pen or other input when in Suspend-to-RAM mode.
Hibernate mode
All system functions are turned off to conserve power. Active data in programs that were running
before suspending system operation is stored on the hard disk drive.
The system does not respond to the pen or other input.
A26391-K222-Z121-1-7619, edition 2 17
Using the Tablet PC
OFF mode
All system functions are turned off to conserve power. The system does not respond to the pen or
other input.
i
The system consumes the same amount of power whether it is in Hibernate mode or OFF
mode.
Powering up the Tablet PC
Requirement: The system is switched off (OFF mode, hibernate).
Press the On/Resume/Suspend button to start the system.
Switching off the Tablet PC
Follow these steps to shut down and turn off your system:
If system operation has been suspended, resume system operation. Additional information is
contained in the section "
Resuming operation" in this chapter.
Close all open programs.
Choose Shut Down from the Windows Start menu.
The system is now switched off.
Activating suspend mode
The Tablet PC allows you to suspend system operation without closing programs or exiting the
operating system.
Windows XP
i
If you have selected the Shut down the computer option in the Start - Control Panel - Power
Options utility, the following procedure will not be possible, since pressing the button will
cause the system to shut down rather than activating the suspend mode.
Windows Vista
If you have selected the Shut down the computer option in the Start symbol - Control Panel -
Mobile PC - Power Options utility, the following procedure will not be possible, since
pressing the button will cause the system to shut down rather than activating the suspend
mode.
To change the power options, go to Start - Control Panel - Power Options.
To suspend system operation:
Press the On/Resume/Suspend button, or run the Standby command from your operating
system or power management program.
If your system is configured to suspend operation using Hibernate mode, a message is displayed
while data is being saved to your hard disk.
18 A26391-K222-Z121-1-7619, edition 2
Using the Tablet PC
If you are replacing the battery, wait until system operation is suspended and the power
indicator is flashing before you remove the battery. Failure to do so could result in loss of
your unsaved data.
(Note: If the Resume On LAN function is enabled in the BIOS Setup, you should not remove
the battery unless the system has been shut down. When Resume ON LAN is enabled, the
buffer battery is disabled in order to optimise battery life.)
!
The power indicator either flashes (Suspend-to-RAM) or is not displayed (Hibernate) when
system operation is suspended, depending on how your system is configured. At this point,
programs that were running are stopped, active data is saved, and the system enters one
of two different low-power modes, or suspend modes, as explained in the following
paragraphs
Refer to the "Resuming operation" section in this chapter to resume system operation. Also, note the
following with regard to suspending system operation:
You can remove the battery while the system is in Suspend-to-RAM or Hibernate mode in order
to install a charged battery. To prevent losing unsaved data, wait until system operation has
been suspended before you remove the battery.
Note: After removing the battery, you have approximately five minutes to replace it with a new
battery or to plug in a power supply before the buffer battery is depleted.
Your system may be configured to suspend operation automatically after a period of inactivity.
If the battery charge drops to a Low Battery warning level while the system is running, the
system will beep periodically. If this happens, suspend system operation, shut down the
system, or connect an external power source, such as the mains adapter, to the Tablet PC.
If the battery charge drops to a critically low level while the system is running, the system is
forced into a pre-selected mode (Suspend-to-RAM or Hibernate). If this happens, you must
either install a charged battery, or connect an appropriate external power source such as the
mains adapter before you can resume system operation. If the battery charge drops to a
critically low level while the system is in Suspend-to-RAM mode, the system stays in Suspend-
to-RAM mode until power is restored or totally dissipated.
The suspend function on the On/Resume/Suspend button may be disabled to prevent
accidental interruption. If this is the case, pressing the On/Resume/Suspend button will not

Resuming operation
When you want to resume operation, press the On/Resume/Suspend button.
From Suspend-to-RAM mode
Status indicators indicate that the system mode is changing. It may take approximately one
minute before the system returns to ON mode and system operation resumes. Note that the
display turns on shortly before the pen becomes active due to the power-up sequences
followed by the system.
From Hibernate mode
Active data is read from the hard disk drive. The system returns to ON mode after a short time.
i
Note that power to several system components must be restored before system operation
resumes. Allow sufficient time for system operation to resume before attempting to use the
system.
If your system is using the "Hibernate" suspend mode, it will take longer to resume
operation than when using Suspend-to-RAM mode. Time is needed to read data from the
hard disk drive.
All programs resume at the point where execution stopped when system operation was suspended.
Setting the display brightness
i
Depending upon whether you are running your system from the battery or mains adapter,
the default screen brightness settings will be different. The default screen brightness for
running on the battery is lower than that for the mains adapter in order to optimise battery
life.
If you do not use the Tablet PC for a short time, you can minimise or switch off the screen
lighting to save energy.

i
The Tablet PC STYLISTIC ST pen is an electronic instrument that can be damaged if used
improperly. Handle the pen with care.
The following list contains guidelines for proper pen handling:
Do not gesture with the pen.
Do not use the pen as a pointer.
Do not tap the pen on surfaces other than the screen of the Tablet PC.
Do not try to turn the thumb grip on the pen. The thumb grip is designed for inserting
and removing the pen from the pen slot and for attaching the retention cord.
Never store the pen with the tip bearing the weight of the pen (e.g. with the tip down
in a pen holder). If the pen is stored with the tip pointing down, this may have an
adverse effect on the pen mechanism (particularly under high temperatures). In this
case the pen tip may react as though it is constantly being pressed down. To avoid
damage, the pen should be stored in the pen slot when not in use.
The screen reacts when the pen tip is approximately 1/8 inch (3-5mm) from the screen.
You can use the pen to run all functions for which you would otherwise use a mouse. In addition, you
can conveniently delete hand-written pen entries using the pen.
Selecting menu options (left mouse click)
Touch the menu option with the pen tip.
Starting programs (double-click left mouse button)
Briefly touch the program icon twice consecutively with the pen tip.
Moving objects/windows (drag with left mouse button pressed)
Place the pen tip directly on the object/window, hold the pen tip pressed against the screen and
move the desired object/window.
Opening pop-up menu (right mouse click)
Press the front of the rocker button (facing toward the pen tip) and simultaneously touch the
corresponding position with the pen tip.

Using the Tablet PC
Battery
The battery supplies the Tablet PC with the necessary power during mobile use. You can increase
battery life by enabling the system's power management features.
The battery charge is indicated by the battery symbol in the status indicator panel (see also "Status
indicator panel
"). When you switch on the Tablet PC, it takes a few seconds before the battery status
is displayed.
The life of the battery is dependent on its proper storage, the number of charging/discharging cycles
and the operating temperature of the Tablet PC.
Charging, caring for and maintaining the battery
!
Only use batteries approved by Fujitsu Siemens Computers for your device.
Take care not to drop the batteries or otherwise damage their casing (fire risk).
If batteries develop a fault, you should stop using them immediately.
Do not touch the contacts of the batteries.
Never interconnect the positive and negative terminals of a battery.
You must dispose of batteries in line with the local regulations for special waste.
Charging the battery
You can charge the battery by connecting the Tablet PC to the mains adapter. The time taken to
charge the battery depends on its usage.
The battery can only be charged when the ambient temperature is between 5°C and 40°C.
Continue working in battery mode until an acoustic warning signal indicates that charging is required.
The battery should not be charged before this point. If you do not connect the mains adapter within
five minutes of the signal described above, your Tablet PC will automatically switch to an energy-
saving mode.
i
Windows XP:
You can set the power management features for your Tablet PC under Start - (Settings) -
Control Panel - Power Options.
Windows Vista:
You can set the power-management features for your Tablet PC under Start - (Settings) -
Control Panel - Mobile PC - Power Options.
Storing the battery
Store the battery in a dry environment at a temperature of between 0°C and +30°C. The lower the
temperature at which the batteries are stored, the lower the rate of self-discharge.
If you will be storing batteries for a longer period (longer than two months), the battery charge level
should be approx. 30%. To prevent deep discharge, check the charge level of the battery at regular
intervals.
To utilise the optimum charging capacity of the battery, it should be completely discharged and then
fully recharged.
A26391-K222-Z121-1-7619, edition 2 33
Using the Tablet PC
i
If you will not be using batteries for long periods, remove them from the device. Never
store the batteries in the device.
Monitoring the battery charge level
The battery charge is indicated by the battery symbol in the status indicator panel (see "
Status
indicator panel
").
Power management includes a "battery charge meter" located in the task bar. When you place the
mouse pointer on the battery symbol, the system displays the battery status. Further information may
be found in the Windows operating system Help.
Removing and installing the battery
The battery can be removed from the Tablet PC and replaced with a charged battery.
Only use batteries approved by Fujitsu Siemens Computers for your Tablet PC.
!
Never use force when inserting or removing a battery.
Make sure that no foreign bodies get into the battery connections.
Select one of the following options to prepare for removing the battery:
If a charged battery is available, you can suspend system operation. A built-in buffer
battery will maintain the system in Suspend-to-RAM mode for about 5 minutes while the
battery is removed. This allows time for replacement with a charged battery.
If a charged battery is not available, save your work and close all running programs, then
shut down the system or initiate Hibernate mode.

Using the Tablet PC
Tips for conserving battery power
Battery life depends upon the operating system, energy-saving settings and the applications in use.
You can extend the life of your battery by conserving battery power:
Use an external power source such as the mains adapter whenever the system is docked to a
Tablet Dock.
Shut down the system if you do not intend to use it for an extended period of time.
Use the energy saving options provided by the operating system to help you conserve power.
If you will not be using the Tablet PC for a short time, you can minimise and/or switch off the
screen lighting in order to save energy.
Buffer battery
The buffer battery allows the battery to be replaced while in standby mode without a loss of data. It
bridges a few minutes. The device cannot be used normally without a battery/power supply (i.e. only
with the buffer battery).
The buffer battery function is disabled if Wake On LAN is enabled in the BIOS Setup.
i
The buffer battery is not charged when the system is delivered. Charge the buffer battery
sufficiently before relying upon it to support the system in the event of battery removal.
To prevent drainage of the buffer battery, always store the system with a charged battery
installed.
If the buffer battery becomes drained, it takes approximately 8 hours for it to be fully recharged.
The buffer battery charges when the mains adapter is connected. The buffer battery only
charges from the battery when the system is in ON mode.
Modem port
The internal 56-Kbps modem module on the Tablet PC supports transmission rates of up
to 56 Kbps (receive), 33.6 Kbps (send) and 14.4 Kbps (fax). (Download rates are limited to
53 Kbps in the United States due to FCC restrictions.)
i
The Tablet PC is designed to accept a standard RJ-11 telephone plug.
Connect the telephone plug to the modem port on your Tablet PC (see "
Left panel").
The telephone plug can be installed whether or not the Tablet PC is powered up.
Contact your local help desk or dealer if you need assistance configuring the modem port.

Security functions
Your Tablet PC enables you to protect your system and personal data against unauthorised access
in a number of ways. By combining these options, you can achieve maximum protection for your
system.
In this chapter you will learn which security functions your Tablet PC is equipped with, the benefits
these functions offer you and how to configure and use them.
!
Bear in mind that improper use of security functions will mean that you will also be unable
to access your system and your data. Therefore, please note the following information:
Back up your data on external data carriers at regular intervals.
Some security functions need you to choose passwords. Please be sure to note
these passwords, as otherwise you will no longer be able to access your system.
We recommend that you make a note of the passwords and keep them in a safe
place.
If you lose both the user and the admin passwords you will need to contact the help desk.
The telephone numbers are contained in the "Help Desk" supplement. Passwords are not
covered by your warranty and a charge will be made for assistance.

Configuring the fingerprint sensor (optional)
Depending on the model, your Tablet PC may be equipped with a fingerprint sensor. The fingerprint
sensor can record an image of a fingerprint. This image can be processed using additional fingerprint
software and used instead of a password. The software for the fingerprint sensor is saved on the
hard disk in the directory C:\AddOn (Windows XP) or C:\Fujitsu Siemens Computers (Windows Vista) and
needs to be installed.
1
1 = Fingerprint sensor
The fingerprint software can be found at C:\AddOn (Windows XP) or C:\Fujitsu Siemens Computers
(Windows Vista) or on the supplied CD.
You must install the fingerprint software in order to be able to use the fingerprint sensor.

Security functions
Using the SmartCard reader
Your tablet PC features an integrated SmartCard reader. With the appropriate software you can use
your SmartCard as an alternative to password protection, but also as a digital signature, for
encrypting your e-mails or for home banking.
1
1 = SmartCard reader
SmartCards
SmartCards are not supplied as standard equipment. You can use all SmartCards that comply with
the ISO standard 7816-1, -2, -3 and -4.
We recommend that you always use two SmartCards. Always keep one of the SmartCards in a safe
place if you are carrying the other SmartCard with you.
The SmartCard can only be used with a PIN so protection is maintained even when the
SmartCard is lost. In order to maximise your security, the SmartCard, which is available as
an accessory, is disabled if three incorrect attempts are made to enter the PIN.
i
The first time you use your SmartCard you must enter the preset PIN provided by the
SmartCard manufacturer or your system administrator.
Please refer to the software documentation for information about which SmartCards are
supported by the software.

Security functions
Inserting a SmartCard
Do not use force when inserting and removing the SmartCard.
!
Make sure that foreign objects do not fall into the SmartCard reader.
Slide the SmartCard into the SmartCard reader with the chip facing upwards and to the front.
When the SmartCard is properly inserted, it protrudes by approximately 2 cm.
Using Trusted Platform Module (optional)
This installation is only necessary in Windows XP. TPM is already integrated into Windows
Vista.
i
A Trusted Platform Module (TPM), a special security chip, can optionally be integrated into your
device. The TPM functions like a permanently installed SmartCard. However, the TPM is not linked
to a user like a SmartCard, but to a hardware system. The TPM contains a unique code. As a result,
the TPM is used to uniquely identify and authenticate the device.
Requirement: The supervisor password is set.
To use the TPM, you must activate the TPM in the BIOS Setup. The TPM is activated by selecting the
Enabled option for Security Chip in the Security menu in the Security Chip Setting sub-menu.
If you have activated the TPM, the Clear Security Chip option appears. You can use this option to
delete the key in the TPM. However, you can then no longer access the data that you encrypted with
the key.
When the TPM is activated, together with the BIOS it checks the trustworthiness of all hardware
components.
For example, with the TPM activated together with software that has TPM capability, data can be
generated which can only be read or run on this Tablet PC. Support for security protocols, such as
SSL (Secure Socket Layer) for Internet connections, IPSec (LAN encryption), S-MIME (e-mail
encryption, WLAN encryption and others) is also possible.
56 A26391-K222-Z121-1-7619, edition 2
Security functions
You will find software that enhances the security of your system when used in conjunction with the
TPM either on the hard disk (installation via Start – All Programs – AddOn (Windows XP) or Start – All
Programs – Fujitsu Siemens Computers (Windows Vista)) or on the supplied TPM software CD/DVD.
Information on using the TPM and the related software is also provided on the TPM software
CD/DVD.
i
If you are using TPM and the software on the TPM software CD/DVD, we strongly
recommend that you use the emergency restore function and create a medium (e.g. floppy
disk, network drive) for restoring the system in emergencies.
The emergency restore medium is the only way to access your encrypted data if a security
key is lost due to hardware faults for example.

Your Tablet PC may be supplied with an internal modem which complies with Part 68 of the FCC
rules. On this Tablet PC is a label that contains the FCC Registration Number and the Ringer
Equivalence Number (REN) for this equipment among other information. If requested, the user must
provide their telephone company with the following information:
The telephone number to which the Tablet PC is connected.
The Ringer Equivalence Number (REN) for this equipment.
The equipment requires a standard modular jack type USOC RJ-11C which is FCC Part 68
compliant.
The FCC Registration Number.
This equipment is designed to be connected to the telephone network or premises wiring using a
standard modular jack type USOC RJ-11C which is FCC Part 68 compliant and a line cord between
the modem and the telephone network with a minimum of 26AWG.
The REN is used to determine the number of devices that you may connect to your telephone line
and still have all of those devices ring when your number is called. Too many devices on one line
may result in failure to ring in response to an incoming call. In most, but not all, areas the sum of the
RENs of all of the devices should not exceed five (5). To be certain of the number of devices you
may connect to your line, as determined by the RENs, contact your local telephone company.
If this equipment causes harm to the telephone network, your telephone company may discontinue
your service temporarily. If possible, they will notify you in advance. If advance notice is not practical
they will notify you as soon as possible. You will also be advised of your right to file a complaint with
the FCC.
This fax modem also complies with fax branding requirements per FCC Part 68.
Your telephone company will probably ask you to disconnect this equipment from the telephone
network until the problem is corrected and you are sure that the equipment is not malfunctioning.

The Ringer Equivalence Number (REN) for this terminal equipment is 0.0. The REN assigned to
each terminal equipment provides an indication of the maximum number of terminals allowed to be
connected to a telephone interface. The termination on an interface may consist of any combination
of devices subject only to the requirement that the sum of the Ringer Equivalence Numbers of all the
devices does not exceed five.
CAUTION:
For safety, users should ensure that the electrical ground of the power utility, the telephone
lines and the metallic water pipes are connected together. Users should NOT attempt to
make such connections themselves but should contact the appropriate electric inspection
authority or electrician. This may be particularly important in rural areas.
!

Radio device, health and authorisation for use
Radio-frequency electromagnetic energy is emitted from the wireless devices. The energy levels of
these emissions, however, are far much less than the electromagnetic energy emissions from
wireless devices such as mobile phones. Radio devices are safe for use by consumers because they
operate within the guidelines found in radio frequency safety standards and recommendations.
The use of the radio devices may be restricted in some situations or environments, such as:
on board an airplane, or
in an explosive environment, or
in situations where the interference risk to other devices or services is perceived or identified
as harmful.
In cases in which the policy regarding use of radio devices in specific environments is not clear (e.g.,
airports, hospitals, chemical/oil/gas industrial plants, private buildings), obtain authorization to use
these devices prior to operating the equipment.
