- Before trimming a hedge, check that it is
free of foreign material such as tie wire.
Trim back branches of the hedge greater than 4 or 5
mm with pruning shears first.
- If cutting causes the blade to jam, stop and remove
the blockage immediately.
- Keep hands away from blades.
4. HEDGE TRIMMING TIPS
SHAPING

The hedge should be trimmed to achieve a trapezoidal
shape, which is wider at the bottom than the top.
This will improve the light penetration to the lower region of
the shrub. An approximate guide is 10 cm in for every metre
in height. The bush can be rounded or column shaped.
CUTTING SEQUENCE

• First trim both sides from the bottom upwards, this
prevents any debris from falling into the area which
has yet to be cut (Fig. E)
• Then trim the top, if the branches of the hedge are
extremely long, trim them back in multiple stages.
(Fig. F).
Note: Doing this also has the benefit of having shorter
cutting which will decompose better on a compost heap.
• If older hedges need to be cut back a substantial
amount, use pruning shears to trim thicker branches
to the desired length before going to work with the
hedge trimmer.
• Ensure that the blade does not come into contact
with anything which could damage it, such as fencing
wire or metal plants support.
AFTER USE
Clean the blades and lightly lubricate with household oil
or spray lubricant.
CHARGING THE BATTERY

The FCGSL-18K charger is only suitable for charging
type FCGSB-18K batteries.
• Place the battery (5) in the battery charger (11) as the
diagram indicates. Make sure that the poles are
placed correctly as indicated by the + and -.
• Place the battery charger's plug in the socket. The
red speed charging indicator (12) will light up.
• Charging is complete as soon as the green indicator
(13) for the minimum charge lights up. The battery is
ready for use.
Only use the battery charger in a dry environment
at a temperature between 10°C and 40°C.
The battery of your drill is uncharged whilst it works.
Before using it for the first time you should charge it for 1
to 2 hours to achieve maximum performance.
The battery's full capacity is reached after charging /
using it for 4 to 5 cycles.
5. MAINTENANCE
Make sure that the machine is not live when
carrying out maintenance work on the motor.
These machines have been designed to operate over a
long period of time with a minimum of maintenance.
Continuous satisfactory operation depends upon
proper machine care and regular cleaning.
Cleaning
Keep the ventilation slots of the machine clean to
prevent overheating of the engine.
Regularly clean the machine housing with a soft cloth,
preferably after each use. Keep the ventilation slots free
from dust and dirt.
If the dirt does not come off use a soft cloth moistened
with soapy water. Never use solvents such as petrol,
alcohol, ammonia water, etc. These solvents may
damage the plastic parts.
Lubrication
The machine requires no additional lubrication.
FAULTS
Should a fault occur, e.g. after wear of a part, please
contact your local Ferm dealer.
In the back of this manual you find an exploded view
showing the parts that can be ordered.
ENVIRONMENT
In order to prevent the machine from damage during
transport, it is delivered in a sturdy packaging. Most of
the packaging materials can be recycled. Take these
materials to the appropriate recycling locations.
Take your unwanted machines to your local Ferm-
dealer. Here they will be disposed of in an
environmentally safe way.
NiCd cells are recyclable. Take them to your local Ferm-
dealer or a local recycling station. The collected battery
packs will be recycled or disposed of in an
environmentally safe way.
GUARANTEE
The guarantee conditions can be found on the separately
enclosed guarantee card.
