Mailboxes
Your answering machine is provided with 3 mailboxes.
Mailbox 1 is the default mailbox. When callers dial your number, they
can leave messages in Mailbox 1 as long as the answering machine is
switched on and Answer−Record mode is active.
If callers wish to leave a message in one of the other two mailboxes, they
must press the following buttons on their telephone before recording has
begun or while the outgoing message they are listening to is still being
played:
, or Select the mailbox required
To use this function, we recommend you record your own outgo-
ing message telling callers what they must do to leave a message
on a specific mailbox.
Recording memos
A memo concerns a message which is recorded directly on the answering
machine and can be played in the same way as an incoming message. A
memo cannot be longer than 1 minute. Speak into the microphone. The
display indicates the length of the memo in seconds.

capacity is not exhausted.

hes and the number of new recordings appears in the display.
Playing messages/memos
If new messages have been recorded in one of the mailboxes, only these
are played first. They are played in the order they were recorded. Before
the actual message or memo is played, the memory location, weekday
and time of the recording are announced.
The cleardown process, which occurs after a message has been
recorded, can vary according to the telephone network operator
or PABX system. Therefore, signal tones or other noises, for ex-
ample, could be recorded with the message.
The new messages must be played before old messages can be played
back. It is then possible to play old messages again in the normal way.

You can register more handsets of the same type on the base
station. Each handset can only be registered on up to four base stations
simultaneously.
Multiple Handsets
You can register a total of 4 handsets of the type Shadow 5XX on your
base station.
Registering handsets on a specific base station
Before starting with the registration process for a handset, switch the base
station to Registration mode.
3 sec Activate Registration mode
The LED on the base station flashes as long as it remains in Re-
gistration mode.
To register a handset on a base station, open the menu and select the RE-
GISTRATION function. Select one of the 4 memory locations for the base
station. Page 45
Memory locations already assigned are identified by a tick following the
memory location. These can be overwritten through a new registration pro-
cess.
When registration is completed, the message
ACCEPTED
appears in
the display. The handset is also assigned an internal call number which
also appears in the display. This is important in order for making internal
calls and performing other registration/deregistration processes.
If the registration process has failed, the message
RETRY?
appears
in the display. Complete the registration process again.
To test whether the handset really is registered on the base sta-
tion, press the Paging button. When registration has been suc-
cessful, the handset rings. Press the Paging button again to stop
the ringing.
Deregistering handsets from a base station
A handset can only be deregistered from a base station using an-
other handset registered to that base station.
To deregister a specific handset from a base station, open the menu, se-
lect the DEREGISTRATION function and then select the name or number
of the handset to be deregistered. Page 45
When deregistration is completed properly, the message
ACCEPTED
appears in the display.
If the deregistration process has failed, the message
RETRY?
appears
in the display. Complete the deregistration process again.
Multiple base stations
Your handsets can be simultaneously registered on up to 4 different base
stations of the type Shadow 58X. Each base station requires its own tele-
phone line socket. Connections can be used with the same call number or
with different ones.
Page 45
Calls in progress, however, cannot be transferred from one base
station to another.
Increasing the range
Position the base stations so that the ranges of the individual base stations
overlap. Test the ranges of the handsets because obstructions in buildings
restrict the range.
Register all the handsets on all the base stations. Activate the AUTO func-
tion (automatic selection of base stations). Page 45
Regardless of where you are, the handset automatically attempts to con-
nect to the next base station with the best connection.
